Lisa Gerrard
Biography
In collaboration with Brendan Perry, Lisa Gerrard is half of the duo Dead Can Dance, which started releasing arty goth rock on the 4AD label in the mid-'80s. Gerrard began her solo career with the 1995 release The Mirror Pool, which contained a lot of work that wouldn't fit comfortably into the DCD oeuvre. Combining these fragments with music that she composed and arranged digitally before reconfiguring them into scores that could be performed, it also draws on a composition by Handel and traditional Iranian music. Recorded and produced largely at her home in rural Australia, it extends the world music inclinations of recent Dead Can Dance albums by featuring bouzouki, tablas, and camel drums; though the somber, orchestrated pomp of Dead Can Dance is also present in her operatic, often wordless vocals, and string/woodwind passages (some of which were performed by Australia's Victorian Philharmonic Orchestra). Gerrard released her second album, Duality, written and performed with Pieter Bourke, in the spring of 1998. Gerrard composed the score for director Niki Caro's Whale Rider in 2003, followed by Immortal Memory, a collaboration with Irish composer Patrick Cassidy in 2004. Another collaboration followed in 2005, this time with composer Jeff Rona for the soundtrack to the Native American drama A Thousand Roads. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

To rwilber1, Yeah Lisa gerrard was born to sing. That may sound simple to simple minds, but it's not. It's perceptive and profound.
You have it in you. If you stop waiting expectantly and stop searching it WILL come to you. What you're born for will show itself in HD clarity when you're not even looking. |

To Pandora: Please find a more representati v e photo of Lisa Gerrard. She's a beautiful lady and that goth looking picture of her really doesn't do her justice and doesn't look like her. Look her up and see for yourself.

I have loved Dead Can Dance since I discovered their work in the mid 90's. I was so glad to see her expand into her own work as well. The first time I saw Gladiator I knew it had to be Lisa Gerrard's incredible voice and talent I was hearing. Great artist!

I think Lisa Gerrard's talent is absolutely phenomenal. She definately takes the road less traveled when it comes to her musical choices and stylings. Those of us who have followed her from her DCD days know what an amazing voice and talent she is. I appreciate her bringing the world to me with her beautiful voice.

If David Byrne would Hook up with her...like a Forest type of deal. Mixed with her awesome voice and an orchresta and the eccentric yet deep Byrne effects. It would be a gaurownteed hit.

Besides the Gladiator soundtrack, Duality should also be in the list here. It's a phenomenal album (I prefer it to Mirror Pool).

Lisa Gerrard is extremely talented. She draws from very diverse sources in creating her music. I do however have to say that I can't listen to too much of her music as I start getting depressed. Most of the music she creates is very dark and somber. That is what give it, its beauty.

That picture was circulated years ago and was taken shortly after Lisa and Brendan Perry decided to dissolve Dead Can Dance. I was reported that Brendan said something to the effect of, 'Dead Can Dance is now dead. The dance is over'...and then he snapped that picture of Lisa using his Poloroid. It began appearing on all the tabloid sites shortly thereafter. Lisa has never forgiven him for it.

Have to agree w/ steve - the music from Gladiator sent chills down my spine - when Pandora started playing it, I freaked - she's lovely. And topsoil is correct - it did make the movie!

For anyone that doesn't realize the pipes she has, forget her solo efforts. Listen to the finale song on Gladiator. If - after that - you still aren't interested in "Dead Can Dance" or her album "The Mirror Pool" (Genius!), then you should stick with barroom music. :)
BTW, Mr. or Ms. Pandora, why isn't that Gladiator soundtrack in rotation? |
