M. Ward
Biography
Portland, OR-based singer/songwriter M. Ward (born Matthew Stephen Ward) grew up listening to gospel and country, two genres that figure prominently in his breezy, West Coast take on Americana. After a six-year stint with the folk-rock trio Rodriguez, Ward began sketching out songs deeply rooted in the classic traditions of American country-folk. Ward's first solo effort came in the form of Duet for Guitars #2, which was written and recorded while he was living between Chicago and various locales on the West Coast. Eventually, the album was placed in the hands of the ever enigmatic Giant Sand mastermind Howe Gelb, who released it on his own Ow Om Recordings in the fall of 2000. The record enjoyed favorable reviews and a considerable amount of attention in underground rock circles, and Ward supported it with a handful tours throughout the United States and Europe.
Released in 2001, End of Amnesia helped to further develop Ward's penchant for dusty, timeless narratives and bluesy, back-porch ballads, but it wasn't until 2003's Transfiguration of Vincent that Ward would begin to penetrate the mainstream. His first release for indie darling Merge Records, Vincent cashed in on the Great Depression obsession of the post-O Brother, Where Art Thou? gold rush, paving the way for 2005's Transistor Radio and 2006's Post-War, both of which firmly established Ward as a major player in the burgeoning indie folk/adult alternative rock scene. In 2008, after collaborating on a song for the film The Go-Getter with actress Zooey Deschanel, the unlikely duo released a well-received album of covers and Deschanel originals called Volume One under the moniker She & Him. Ward returned to the studio later that year to begin work on his next full-length offering; 2009's Hold Time, which featured guest vocals from Deschanel, Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), and Lucinda Williams, arrived in early 2009. ~ Nate Cavalieri & James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide

Jesus H Christ - THIS is how you do a cover song. on 2003 'transfigura t i o n ' M. Ward covers Bowie's "let's dance" and makes it entirely his own. THIS is how you do it. M. Ward could do ONLY covers in his style and you'd go 'damn...that s all original" and want to hear it over and again. Why ANYONE does covers any song like it orignially sounds is beyond me...b-b-b-b - b - b o r i n g . Thank you M. Ward...you are among the best acoustic musicians on earth.

I just saw him for the second time (first time since "Hold Time" has been released) at a free concert in Salt Lake City and it was great. He seems to capture the magic of summer and what it means to be young or _______(inse r t your own inrepretatio n of Ward's wonderful music). You can't help but have a great time when seeing him and his group playing live. Especially having a good friend die and just leaving the viewing going to a free M. Ward. Few people now a days can inspire even when some

the review above is heavy of references but nothing about M. Ward! any of M. Ward's music goes right up with Bon Iver's "for emmma..." any Phosphoresce n t , Joze Gonzales, and other mint-swishin g acousti-lect r i c s for cutting up the now dead carcass of acoustic / singer-songw r i t e r molds and delivering some new sound that still has guitar and roots.

M. Ward is able to capture my soul for a song and take it down the bright road of nostalgia, where for a moment I can escape from the mundane and feel connected to the past, present, and future. He's a magician.

lo-fi but not stupid. catchy but not vapid. intelligent but not esoteric. unusual but not creepy. once upon a time, he would've gotten some attention on the big stage. oh well.

Perhaps the best songwriter of our generation. Johnny Cash would be proud:)

I like how the review just kinda tacks on Transfigurat i o n of Vincent and Transistor Radio as afterthought s , when they're some of his most important work. Transfigurat i o n is one of the best records I own I think

I love M. Ward's collaboratio n with Zooey Deschanel with She & Him Volume One. It is one of the most perfect mixtures of indie and counrty-folk and I can enjoy listening to the melodies again and again.

Ward is delightful. I'm a particular fan of "Chinese Translation, " which incidentally has a wonderful video to accompany it.
|
||
awesome, I heard One Life Away when it played on my "Fok Rawk" channel (seeded with Cat Stevens and Dan Hicks until now, added M. Ward.)

||
Beautiful, a nice piece of work. It reminds me of driving all night to Denver, Colorado back in the summer of 1991. I will definitely check out more from this artist.

The bio needs to be updated to include Post-war and his work with Bright Eyes and She & Him. Post-War is definitely his best album so far, and the Bright Eyes stuff is also awesome. She & Him needs less of Zooey Deschanel and more of M. Ward. Her voice annoys the s**t out of me. To Go Home is my current favorite song.

This popped up on my Sufjan Stevens channel. A nice surprise. I loved it instantly. Sweet w/o verging into saccharine territory.

This is the kind of music that makes life a little more bright in an early-mornin g - s u n s h i n e - r e f l e c t e d - i n - s t i l l - p o o l s - o f - w a t e r way. I think more people need this feeling. Suggested by my Neutral Milk Hotel channel, this was the best moment of my day so far.

He just worked on a movie and did most of the soundtrack for it. Gorgeous. "The Go Getter"

I found him on my Richard Buckner station and have fallen in love with Hi-Fi - can't wait to hear more by him.

sounds like what am radio would sound like in 2008 if radio hadn't died and a.m. wasn't a swear word. like man in a high castle, a unknowable meta-present that i'm happy to drawl through.
