Mark Knopfler
Biography
Mark Knopfler is a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader. His group, Dire Straits, was formed in London in 1977 and went on to become an international success after the release of its debut album in 1978. Though it began as a group with a permanent lineup led by Knopfler, in its first few years it evolved into a brand name for Knopfler with varying personnel. Starting with Local Hero in 1983, Knopfler has scored several motion pictures. He has also recorded with Chet Atkins and with the Notting Hillbillies. In 1995, Knopfler quietly laid Dire Straits to rest. He launched a full-fledged solo career with the release of Golden Heart in 1996; subsequent soundtrack efforts include 1998's Wag the Dog, 1998's Metroland, and 2002's Shot at Glory. Sailing to Philadelphia, a lush collection of folk-rock and breezy Americana that featured guest appearances by James Taylor, Van Morrison, and Squeeze leaders Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford, appeared in fall 2000, and Ragpicker's Dream followed in 2002. In 2003, on the way to rehearsals in London, Knopfler broke his collarbone, shoulder, and seven ribs in a motorcycle crash. He returned in 2004 with Shangri-La, and in 2006 he completed All the Road Running, a collaboration with Emmylou Harris recorded over the span of nearly seven years that also found life as a live CD/DVD release (Real Live Roadrunning) later that November. Kill to Get Crimson appeared in 2007, and Get Lucky in 2009. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

I love Mark's lyrics, his haunting soul-wrenchi n g voice and his lovely clean guitar playing. He's truly an old soul. If I was a songwriter, I'd be him. Or Paul Simon.
Wish he came around in concert every year! |

MK reads another book and boom like that we have another great song.... check out Madame Geneva's from Kill to Get Crimson - fantastic song/album.

It took 27 years but I finally got to shake the mans hand who shaped my music preferences so many years ago. From the Alchemy concert I watched on MTV concerts back in 1981 or 82, to front row seats in Philadelphia ' s Mann center last July, my dream came true. I got to shake Mark's hand at the end of the concert and I was blown away. I can't wait for the new album and tour to follow!

Mark proves time and time again that he can walk a perfect tightrope between hard classic rock and folk and make it all blend and sound good together.
Knophler does have his own unique sound, much like Gilmore or SRV.....that ' s what seperates the good ones from the GREAT ones! You can hear 1 note and distinctly tell who's playing..... .

Comparing Mark Knopfler and Jimi Hendrix does a disservice to both artists. Jimi was uniquely talented, visionary and also somewhat erratic with a tragically short career. Mark Knopfler has been putting out polished, thoughtful, moving music for over 30 years. It's like comparing a nitro fueled NHRA dragster to a classically styled sports car. It's apples and oranges.

he and jj cale are a lot alike. i started listening to cale back when he was with leon russell in the assylumn choir

ONE OF THE BEST GUITARISTS EVER.
THE SOUND OF HIS GUITAR IN UNMISTIKABLE . UNIQUE. |
His brother, David Knopfler also has the same sound. Not released in the USA, his CDs are available in Europe.
Mark Knopfler should also be credited with THe Princess Bride Soundtrack. He is an incredibly talented musician, in every sense.
I don't see the album golden heart anywhere, tha t ' s Mark Knopfler at his best!
not only a great guitar player, but also an excellent story teller. He inspired me to pick up the guitar, and also to put it up in frustration.
The notes on Mark don't mention Golden Heart...If you haven't already, check out "Imelda" and "Rudiger", the first a rocker in the truest sense and then Mark's take on a tango...unbe l i e v a b l e !
I truly believe Mark Knopfler is probably the best guitarist I've seen or heard. Chet thought the same. Chet knew guitar.
Yeah, first time I heard this band was their first album in 1978. And since that day when I heard Sultans of Swing I have been a fan. Brothers In Arms, the song, will play at my funeral one day. His feel and play are mezmerizing. I love this band and Mark Knofler for his truly unique style.
Ever hear of The Princess Bride? Yep... that was scored by Mark! Pure awesomeness! ! !
Mark's song writing has been consistently excellent down the years. The lyrics have an uncanny ability to evoke time and space that most can only imagine. His subjects have varied from the two gentlemen who surveyed and drew the Mason-Dixon Line to Sonny Liston. The guitar playing always hooks me, but the message is what stays with me.
wow, what a great voice, just gets to me everytime!! his vocal tone and guitar playing is just toooooooo cool------an n e t t e marie
another unsung hero, beautiful musician, Wish he lived next door.. BE A FUN JAM
Sultans of Swing does have a great guitar solo but you need to listen to Telegraph Road to hear a "guitar solo". The most underrated nine minutes and thirty-two seconds ever recorded.
The best guitar solo ever was on Sultans of Swing .... years ago. Mark seems to have evolved much like Ry Cooder
My all time favorite artist. Be sure to check out his work with Chet Atkins as well as The Notting Hillbillies.
Knopfler's guitar playing is strong on melody and wonderfully lacking in pulp and cliches.
The most cerebral, lyrical artist, but then, there's Randy Newman, my hero, whom Mark was influenced by.
Mark's talent for both singing and guitar playing is truly amazing. Playful and soulful at the same time.
One of the most easily recognizable guitarists around. A perfect example of 'less is more', though he can bend the strings with the best of them when he wants to.
Heard for the first time, for me, on the radio here in Denver. The song was "Punish Monkey". Really like his music and since I found this station I have heard much more of his works. Really enjoy this station.
Loved Dire Straits, now loving Mark still. Just got the CD Shangri-La about a year ago, simply awesome! No matter what he does he simply cannot go wrong!
