Math And Physics Club
Biography
The Math and Physics Club are a twee pop group that formed in Seattle in 2004, when guitarist James Werle and vocalist Charles Bert, who had been collaborating on various recordings up until that point, started working with drummer Kevin Emerson, violinist Saundrah Humphrey, and bassist Ethan Jones. Sounding something like a cross between the Smiths, the Field Mice, and Belle & Sebastian (in other words, extremely twee), the Math and Physics Club were snapped up by Matinee by the end of the year. Their debut EP on that label, Weekends Away, came out in February 2005; the disc enjoyed quite a bit of critical buzz, and was in regular rotation on Seattle's KEXP that year. Proving that they were anything if not prolific, the Math and Physics Club had another EP, Movie Ending Romance, out on Matinee by the time summer rolled around. Their self-titled debut full-length, produced by Kevin Suggs, came out a little over a year later, and they followed it up with a modest East Coast tour. Having taken a quick breather at the beginning of the year, the Math and Physics Club returned with another Matinee EP, Baby I'm Yours, in the summer of 2007. ~ Margaret Reges, All Music Guide

I could not believe this wasn't Belle & Sebastian when I heard them for the first time. Good music and sound, but way too similar to B&S. I had to google the lyrics to "Cold As Minnesota" just to make sure the song wasn't labeled incorrectly.

Twee is the name for the "throwback" sound that bands like Belle and Sebastian / The Essex Green / Bishop Allen have embrased. Someone called it "punks revolt into childhood". Then again, you have to be old enough to remember what early punk sounded like to get the true weight of the phrase... because Elvis Costello was a good example of punk music that has twee elements.

@meganismiss i n g and @marco826, twee is that innocent sound, with very childish, non-pretenti o u s and innocent lyrics and very happy melodies. Wiki it! it's definetly worth it.

i don't know what twee is either, i agree with puddlejumper about the b&s album art rip off. i think christmk's question is stupid. stupid enough i felt it necessary to take the time to type it and post it.

Why do they sound EXACTLY like Belle and Sebastian? That was my first question, i thought maybe they were related until i saw they were from Seattle. .... hmm..

I too agree that they sound like the smiths but the smiths really aren't any making any more music so i look forward to hearing more from them
