I heard Mike perform at Texas Christian University with the TCU Jazz Emsemble {better known as TCU's Jazz Band) under the capable direction of Curt Wilson. He has complete command of his instrument. As far as I know, his pompacity (as noted by Dan Shelton in another comment) certainly had no negative influence on his playing! Maybe it even enhanced it?

Another great big band swing ensemble. Also great arrangements and a terrific trumpet solo. I gew up listening to Kenton, Miles and Glenn Miller also. In fact I have danced to Glenn and Woodie Herman.

You just can't beat the sound of a big band! I know I'm old, however, the days of Stan, Woody, The Count, Maynard etc. were really exciting. I heard the Glenn Miller group a few weeks ago and the sound is still alive and well.

I performed with Mike a few times in the late 80s while still in High School. Personally, I thought he was a pompous a** but he is a helluva brass man
