Mint Condition
Biography
Formed in the early '80s in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Mint Condition began as lead singer Stokley Williams, guitarist Homer O'Dell, keyboardist Larry Waddell, keyboardist/saxophonist Jeff Allen, keyboardist/guitarist Keri Lewis, and guitarist/bassist Rick Kinchen. The six talented musicians combine a variety of influences and experiences to shape their own sound. Williams began playing classic West African instruments at the age of four, while O'Dell grew up listening to his father play blues bass and singing with him in a family group. Waddell played in a recording arts band at school and mastered keyboards by listening to jazz greats Oscar Peterson and Herbie Hancock. Exposed to his father's extensive jazz collection, Allen played keyboards and sax in local bands throughout his high-school years, as Lewis was mastering keyboards, percussion, and guitar while attending school. Kinchen's first and strongest influence was his family, all of whom played instruments and encouraged his interest in music. He developed his skills as a bass player by listening to records by Stanley Clarke and Louis Johnson of the Brothers Johnson. Kinchen played in various bands in his native Chicago and performed at several productions at Kennedy-King College before moving to the Twin Cities.
The band was featured at the 1986 Minnesota Black Musician Awards program and built a strong core following for itself in a five-state area (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Dakota, and Nebraska) as a result of its dazzling, highly energetic live shows. Mint Condition came to the attention of Minneapolis soul producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis as a result of a showcase performance in 1989. The band had steady success beginning with the hits "(Breaking My Heart) Pretty Brown Eyes" and "Forever in Your Eyes" from its debut, Meant to Be Mint, and with "Nobody Does It Betta" and "(U Send Me) Swinging" from its second album, From the Mint Factory; the group continued with the platinum success of the single "What Kind of Man Would I Be" from its gold album Definition of a Band. Going into the 21st century, Mint Condition were the only high-profile R&B/pop band with a major-label recording, represented by their excellent Life's Aquarium, issued in November 1999. Throughout the early 2000s, their profile wasn't nearly as high, but their core following remained and developed along with a sporadically released but consistently high-quality series of albums, including Livin' the Luxury Brown (2005), Live from the 9:30 Club (2006), and E-Life (2008). ~ Ed Hogan, All Music Guide

i hope MC comes back to the KC area again sometime soon. can't wait to see them again. they are one of the only "modern-era" bands who keep the tradition of great musicianship that was alive in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

I saw them perform a few weeks ago in Cary, NC. Those guys are STILL fantastic. It was VERY refreshing to a group that can sing, play instruments, and put on an amazing show. I'm definitely a fan now.

just a thought... if there is an artist you really enjoy and care about, you should actually PURCHASE their music, instead of just burning a copy off of someone else or downloading a bootleg for free. we have to show our support by doing that as well as paying the price of admission at their concerts. if you get tired of hearing garbage music, that is the way to keep the artists we truly love in business.

Man, Mint Condition is the real deal! vocals and musical artistry, a real R&B band for our generation. There aren't many out there anymore, take a look around! EWF are still doing their thing, and on the new side, what do we have, the Roots? Far and few between. Keep doing it Mint Condition! Please come back to Yoshi's soon!

I remember growing up as a teen listening to Mint Condition. They still sound as good now as they did then. Their sound will never go out of style.

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting this talented group in the Chi, this past summer @ Chicago State University during an "old school venue". Very cool and down to earth. Approahable and friendly. I was pleasantly surprised. As usual, the performance was stellar. I'll never forget it!

What happened to all the good music? There are no talent groups like Mint Condition anymore.
Mint Condition is one of the most underrated groups. Not enough exposure. They are the Earth Wind and Fire of a new generation! Their musical transitions are always a surprise. They are wonderful! Thanks!
The new song by Mint Condition "Nothin' Left to Say" is so close to what I have gone thru until I feel like I could or should have wrote it myself.
yeh, i agree bonnie, they are a very solid band. great instrumental i s t s and powerful vocals. can't beat that combo!
they're a little out of my age genre (when they were big in the industry I was a tot) but their music does something for me that no other group can. There is something about the combination of live music with talented vocals that can not be compared. So glad to see a true art form come from such a long way. I wish them musch continued success and I look forward to more music!
well i got to see them in concert about a week and a half ago. they were very good (only complaint has nothing to do w/ them, but the standing-roo m - o n l y venue we saw them in!). i didn't know that the lead singer was such a kick butt drummer! anyway, good show and great band!

I can honestly say that these brotha's really got it going on. I am in love with the lead vocalist voice. He has a range that is out of this world!! I sing in church and I have never seen anyone like Stokley that can rock the mic quite like him! He's very talented and his group as well. Thank you for sharing such talent. RNM

They were just in here in the Carolinas and ripped up the coliseum. THese guys are truly my favorite band of all time. I like other artist but, these guys corner the market at all times. Jazz, blues, R&B, you name it.... They do it. I love there music. They introduced me to what a modern day band should sound like. I really love their music!
