Mute Math
Biography
Taking cues from several decades of alternative rock, the New Orleans-based quartet Mute Math (also known as MUTEMATH and MuteMath) fuses together New Order's synth-dance epics, the Stone Roses' shambling shuffle, Radiohead's spiky chilliness, Air's serene ambient pop, and the booming vocals of mainstream pop/rock. Singer Paul Meany, formerly of the Christian rock group Earthsuit, was working in New Orleans when he began a long-distance musical correspondence with drummer/programmer Darren King, who was based in Springfield, MO. The two began sending CD-Rs back and forth up the Mississippi River, eventually putting enough songs together to convince King to relocate to New Orleans and start a proper band. After adding guitarist Greg Hill and bassist Roy Mitchell-Cardenas, the new band completed the Meany-King compositions in 2003; Meany then took the resulting demo to noted CCM producer Tedd T., who was enthusiastic enough to launch a new indie label, Teleprompt Records, in order to release 2004's Reset EP. The EP's success allowed Mute Math and Teleprompt to negotiate a distribution deal with Warner Bros., which reissued the EP in 2005.
Although Mute Math completed their self-titled debut album that same year, marketing disputes between Teleprompt and Warner Bros. delayed its release for nearly a year. Because Warner Bros. wanted to promote Mute Math as a CCM band instead of an alternative rock act, thereby limiting the group's mainstream exposure, Mute Math and Teleprompt Records filed suit against the major label, claiming breach of contract and negligent misrepresentation. The band's website announced that the suit was settled out of court, concurrent with the signing of an improved deal with Warner Bros. An expanded version of Mute Math, featuring remastered tracks from Reset and a bonus limited-edition live EP, was released on September 26, 2006.
"Typical" proved to be a modestly successful single, cracking the mainstream rock charts in 2007 and finding a home on MTV, where the song's unique music video became a hit. Tours with Eisley, Alanis Morissette, and Matchbox Twenty honed the band's live chops, and Mute Math returned in 2009 with a new album, Armistice. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

These guys were one of the best performances at the ACL festival in Austin Tx this year, and I just traveled to Houston to see them and it was UNBELIEVABLE ! They are definitely worth traveling to go see, even hundreds of miles!

I almost like these guys alot. However, I find myself skipping half the song because it's just to frenetic and loud on the drums. Makes me feel like I've had a tripple-essp r e s s o . Wish they'd tone it down a little, and let the singer be louder than the drums.

I just went to their show in L.A. at Club Nokia. These guys put on a great show. Excellent musicianship and entertaining stage presence. They all play multiple instruments. Go see them live!

If this band comes within 200 miles of you...See them. Ive seen them twice (two different tours) and they are the finest live act I've ever seen. Amazing musicians, passionate about their work.
Brilliant. |

Never heard them before. Really good. That they are Christian is icing.

pandora always takes a while to get licensing figured out for new albums...hop e f u l l y armistice is put up soon.

They are a really good commercial rock band. I'm surprised these guys aren't all over the radio. I hear so much Police influence in this band. The drummer is on a Stewart Copland thing, and the singer does some serious Sting like phrasing. It's not a bad thing though, because the hooks are huge and the band has a great amount of atmosphere.

Well, they have a cd, Armstice, coming out in August and they have an ep that came out earlier this year, as well as another ep that came out in 2004. So the disocraphy is not correct. Just to let you know, good cds take a long time. Its not like you can just record, mix, edit, master in a year without a cd sounding s**tting. Good bands take long awaited time to produce good quality music. Besides it hypes the listeners.

the percussions in reset are awesome!!Dar r e n King can beat on some drums!!

They are christians the lead singer just really didi not want to be labeled as a christian band. Just saw them in concert last fall.
So they WERE Christian or they ARE? I hope they're seeking God. I didn't even know Earthsuit and Mutemath were the same until like a couple weeks ago. I was really surprised.
i love the spot light video. its such an awsome concept for a music video. very original and clever. the song aint to bad either.
A lot like the Police because they use a lot of reggae undertones (Earthsuit used a LOT more of it - they've toned it down a little so far) Samgoble... So any message in a song is okay as long as it doesn't espouse a Judeo-Christ i a n worldview? Anybody heard their song from the Twilight Soundtrack?
this band is a must see live they have an amazing amount of energy on the stage and put on a phenomenal show if you can go to a concert you won't regret it

This band is great! I love Stare at the Sun... One of the best songs they have.

Mute Math has been dominating my playlist for a while now. The vocal clarity is what draws me in. The music and the vocals seem to be distinctly set apart, but the way the two blend is perfect. Great production work to be sure. I'm glad the guys are getting national recognition finally. They deserve it.
My favorite song, Control, really speaks to my soul about the importance of surrender and trust. Lord knows I have a serious lack of both. |

Newsflash samgoble... if they're you're favorite band then you should know that they already started out Christian as Earthsuit. They're not *going christian*, they've already been there for quite some time.
