Nightwish
Biography
Following in the footsteps of the Gathering and Lacuna Coil (goth-influenced "symphonic" metal bands with female vocalists), Nightwish was formed in Kitee, Finland, in 1997 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Initially attempting to create acoustic music, he recruited trained opera vocalist Tarja Turunen, but soon added full metal-band instrumentation in the persons of guitarist Emppo Vuorinen, bassist Sami Vänskä, and drummer Jukka Nevalainen. The band's demos landed them a contract with the Finnish label Spinefarm, which released their debut album Angels Fall First in late 1997 (it appeared in the rest of Europe the following year). The follow-up, Oceanborn, appeared in late 1998 and made Nightwish a bonafide mainstream success in their homeland; the album reached the Finnish Top Five and spun off three Top Ten singles. The band toured Europe heavily, consolidating their success, and in 2000 recorded their third album Wishmaster. Not only did it top the Finnish charts, but it also became the group's first album to be released in the U.S. (by Century Media, which reissued their previous albums in 2001 as well). ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

I can't decide either. Tarja has a stronger, more aggressive voice & Anette has a softer, prettier voice. It seems to depend on my mood.
Haven't seen them live yet. |
I saw Nightwish live for the first time in Oklahoma City, and I would have to say that Ghost Love Score was the best song that they played live. Absolutely amazing! Although i'm not sure whether I like Anette or Tarja better as far as vocals go.
I'm already wanting to get more albums, but Christmas is around the corner. I promised not to buy a single album...
oh, screw this. a Nightwish album is on my list. I'll download a Reflexion album from iTunes... (then advise them to Pandora!) |
Having taken a sobering look at how many albums I've been acquiring lately (and the price tags, can't forget those!), I've gone on a music buying sabbatical.
All this talk about Nightwish's earlier albums is not helping my resolve folks, ha ha! Must... resist... urge to run up credit card bill... (I give myself perhaps a week at best.) |
LLM:
I didn't count OTHAFA because it's an EP, not an actual album. Honestly, I think Highest Hopes is the WORST best of collection I've seen! Only about 4 songs on there deserved the title of NW's best, I can't believe they had stuff like Walking In The Air and Deep Silent Complete on there, that's just wrong! And, they used the weaker version of Sleeping Sun. It was just a horrible collection overall. (I mean, they didn't even have End Of All Hope or Ghost Love Score!) |
I think my favorites would be someting like this for now:
Angels Fall First Oceanborn Century Child Wishmaster Once Over the Hills and Far Away Dark Passion Play (I don't count Highest Hopes because it's a compilation and no new material.) |
I have a new MP3 player on my wish list...I'll be listening to a lot of Emperor and 13F until I get a new one, seeing as those are the only two things it will play at the moment...
I think my favorite albums by NW go: Oceanborn Wishmaster Once Century Child Dark Passion Play Angels Fall First (I guess I don't count Highest Hopes as an actual album, and Over The Hills and Far Away was more of an EP than an actual album.) |
Scratch that, Escapist is currently my favorite Nightwish song of all time.
Since we're updating our NW favorites, I think the albums go:
1.Dark Passion Play 2.Wishmaster 3.Once 4.Oceanborn 5.Angels Fall First 6.Century Child I think my favorite NW song at the moment is either Planet Hell, Sahara, or Angels Fall First. |
I have Wishmaster on my Christmas list! ^_^
I must add that I enjoy Highest Hopes way more than Once. both are excellent, but I think I'll really love old pre-Once Nightwish (maybe Oceanborn as well, despite that power metal bores me). |
Oceanborn is probably my favorite album of theirs.
There is no other band that is even close to being simular to Nightwish, Unique, one of a kind, and the music makes me feel good. I really like Tarja Turunan(the original vocalist), She has made some great new music since leaving Nightwish(ch e c k it out), and Anette (the new Vocalist)wel l , her voice is a bit on the squeeky side but makes a very enjoyable and listenable performance on Dark Passion Play. My favorite Nightwish song is Astral Romance.
I'm thinking that "Gethsemane" is probably my favorite NW song at the moment.
@12nights: I don't know the names of the individual moments. I do know, however, that I like that song a lot more than GLS. |
GLS initially struck me the same way, Plague, but as I listened to it more, it grew on me. Now it's probably my favorite Nightwish song.
I meant that the "Christabel" part of BOTB is stretched out too long. After about thirty seconds of it I'm thinking "Okay, Tarja. You can stop now. Really, we don't need to hear you anymore."
I think GLS starts out strong, stays strong, gets boring, then gets REALLY strong and stays like that until the end. |
I haven't heard "Beauty of the Beast" yet... ^^'
See, I was thinking just the exact same thing as you, 12nights, except about "GLS". It starts out strong, gets boring, and then gets stretched out. I've always felt that "BotB" got stronger as it progressed, or at least it always got me excited as it went on...
Well, in a contest I would say I prefer GLS to BOTB, but that's just me. Beauty Of The Beast is nice, but it gets boring very quickly. The end is also a bit stretched out.
NW ballads can go either way with me. I love most of them, but I think Forever Yours and Swanheart are where they just went wrong, I can honestly say I hate those songs. Once Upon.. is pretty good. |
I don't mind NW ballads like "Once Upon A Troubador" and "Ghost" but I agree with you that "Beauty of the Beast is better than "Ghost."
"Beauty of the Beast" just seems proggier to me, and it's more exciting. "Ghost Love Score" is like, a glorified ballad, and I've always hated NW ballads.
I like "Beauty of the Beast" more than "Ghost Love Score." But I must had that they are really close.
So does anyone else prefer "Beauty of the Beast" to "Ghost Love Score" as Nightwish's best epic?
Hopefully sometime soon!!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! Otherwise, we're doomed to be annoyed by willow forever. Now that's scary!!!!
*blasts a random Nightiwsh song*
yep. no one cares. when will God smack Godsmack? |
Willow, I have only one thing to say. STFU. Seriously. People that listen to Nightwish and similar bands don't give a flying @#$% about Godsmack. Go talk about your Nu Metal with someone who cares.
They made some real great head banger songs back in the day. Crownless and Kingslayer lmao.
Yeah, the keyboard work on Oceanborn and Wishmaster is really impressive.
I think more songs by Nightwish leaves me in awe than most bands I hear. I really think Tuomas goes psycho on the keyboards a lot... it's kinda scary... 0_O
I swear, every Nightwish song I hear makes me cry almost. I don't know how such brilliance gets out of Tuomas' head and onto paper. I guess if I did I would be making music myself and not posting on Pandora. =D
"Last of the Wilds" and "The Islander" are two of my favorite songs on DPP. And also, the Celts were not just from Ireland.
Last Of The Wilds can do that too. :)
I LOVE Celtic music. Therefore, Nightwish + Celtic sound= EPIC WIN! |
I thought that as well... ^_^'
at the time when I first heard the song, I forgot that Nightwish was from Finland... oopsies... XD |
I finally got around to The Islander, pretty good song. I see why people would be fooled into thinking they're Irish from that song.
...and that my biggest complaint is the lousy guitars since Marco came along.
............ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Okay, I think I'm just going to go back to talking about how awesome and adorable Emppu is. It's safer. |
well, this Tarja vs Anette discussion is better than the wars on Youtube. this is not bloody at least. :)
