Nightwish
Biography
Following in the footsteps of the Gathering and Lacuna Coil (goth-influenced "symphonic" metal bands with female vocalists), Nightwish was formed in Kitee, Finland, in 1997 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Initially attempting to create acoustic music, he recruited trained opera vocalist Tarja Turunen, but soon added full metal-band instrumentation in the persons of guitarist Emppo Vuorinen, bassist Sami Vänskä, and drummer Jukka Nevalainen. The band's demos landed them a contract with the Finnish label Spinefarm, which released their debut album Angels Fall First in late 1997 (it appeared in the rest of Europe the following year). The follow-up, Oceanborn, appeared in late 1998 and made Nightwish a bonafide mainstream success in their homeland; the album reached the Finnish Top Five and spun off three Top Ten singles. The band toured Europe heavily, consolidating their success, and in 2000 recorded their third album Wishmaster. Not only did it top the Finnish charts, but it also became the group's first album to be released in the U.S. (by Century Media, which reissued their previous albums in 2001 as well). ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

You're welcome Persephone. I'm much too obsessed about this band, apparently. :-) And Joelle, Brittnay, I couldn't agree more.

I love Nightwish.. both new and old. Annette's voice is something that I can listen to over and over without being overwhelmed though. :)
thank you ryan... thought i read somewhere his name was marco but i wasn't sure.
i love this band. this band has changed my life forever and i am happy i came across nightwish. long live nightwish!
One ov the best songs they have is Planet Hell I think...And it is one ov the most underplayed.
i just saw a picture of annette in the latest terriozer and she LOOKS SO HOT !
Persephone, the name of the male singer is Marco Hietala. He is also their bassist.
And yes, Angel. They have. And it hasn't all just been fluff, either. Every single nightwish song is worthy of praise... |
Tarja's "annoying" quality comes from her operatic training. They are taught to e-nun-ci-ate every word, dragging out their vowels. It can take some getting used to.
I am loving these guys, what dramatic goodness! |
you have to admitt for a band that has been recording for just a little more than ten years they have accomplished a lot.
nonsense, they didn't fire her... they quit her (sounds nicer)person a l l y , i like the new vocalist. no, they're not the same w/o tarja, but change is the very soul of the world, yes? i like anette. i've got to agree, she is easier to understand. and- it's worth repeating- their cover of "phantom" just works so well! the male singer (name?) has the perfect voice for the phantom.
No no no they're still together. They just fired Tarja and got a new vocalist.
wait they broke up ? shhherrrshus s s h h h h - t h a t s the sound of cutting.
Great band. Although Tarja was / is a great singer with and without Nightwish, I couldn't understand one word. Anette works well with the band and I loved them live in Denver. Tarja was fired b/c the band couldn't handle her anymore, so quit complaining tarja is gone ;)
Tottally awesome. I don't think I've ever heard anyone quite like that. I was working out when I heard them and it really gave me some energy.
I saw Nightwish this past Friday evening in Kentucky. Tuomas, Marco and the guys were rock solid and very tight and very together. I could have a great time with just them. Anette didn't even phone it in. And that's kindest thing I can say about her performance. So I'll shut up now.
I MISS TARJA!!!! I'm going to go climb into some Tarja Nightwish now. |
sometimes you have to suspend belief that this is metal-but it works unlike Madonna-the most successful con artist in show business in the last 40 years.
Everyone that I show Nightwish to loves them. I absolutely NEED to see them in concert one of these days.
Funny story - I played Nightwish for my mom - specifically the cover of Phantom of the Opera..and she fell in love with it...lol. When she found out they were heavy metal ...she freaked out. She did admit, though, she was enraptured by Tarja's voice. I am too.
I just saw Nightwish in Las Vegas last weekend. If you get the chance to see them live, GO. They are amazing. And Anette is awesome. I think their sound was more unique with Tarja, but still love them with Anette. I actually *like* Anette's voice better.
Christopher Bride: I disagree, Amy Lee's voice is too haunting, too ethereal to fit properly with most of Nightwish's style- from what I've heard, they're (for the most part) a bit more fast-paced than Evanescence. Amy Lee might fit in with Within Temptation, though, and Cristina Scabbia could work with Nightwish.
I LOVE The Phantom of the Opera. When I heard Nightwish's cover of it I was blown away. A METAL version of one the best Broadway tunes EVER. If I wasn't already well on my way to being a huge Nightwish (with Tarja) fan, THAT pushed me over the edge.
Black Rose: In answer to your question, If I had to choose between Nightwish as it is now and Within Temptation, I would choose W/T. However if asked that question back when Tarja was still fronting Nightwish, then Nightwish, hands-down. Sharon kicks, but there is none better than Tarja.
Though I think Tarja's operatic-esq u e stuff on songs like Passion and the Opera is fantastic, I also think Annette is an amazing singer. Nightwish still has some good albums left in them. And Tuomas does all the work anyway, so it's still just as good instrumental l y and lyrically.
P.S. they destroy evanesence.. . . h e y wait a sec...they'd be so awesome with Evanesence's singer!
I wish this band would get a different singer...she annoys the crap out of me
...
so, which band do u like better? Nightwish, evanesance, or Within Temptation? |
I agree, not the same without Tarja. I feel like they're missing something without her.
I'm bummed I never got to see them with Tarja. At least there's an array of recordings I can bury myself in.
