Om
Biography
The sparingly named Om reunites the oft-heralded Sleep rhythm section of Al Cisneros (bass, vocals) and Chris Haikus (drums); but this time, rather than producing monolithic stoner/doom metal, the duo is focused on a softer, if no less hypnotic brand of drone rock, partly infused with monastic and Tibetan chanting. Since reconnecting in 2004, the duo has released its epic sonic meditations in the shape of split EPs with the likes of Current 93 and Six Organs of Admittance, and albums like 2005's Variations on a Theme, 2006's Conference of the Birds, and 2007's Pilgrimage. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide

I love this band. They define the whole "less is more" cliche, but legitimately so. Not to say that it is in every case, but still. This is genuine music. Certain sounds I feel just cannot by achieved by people without a genuine true passion. It's great stuff, and I don't care who or what they "compare to" because I'll always love the music completely regardless of trivial things like that.

mdcairns he plays through a eletrical company amp and cabinet that's about 6 feet tall,I'm pretty sure that he tunes his bass in C (CGCFED) and when I saw them live a while back it looked like he was using a some sort of distortion (possibly a big muff) and some kinda chours

Sorry about the lack of philosophica l intuitivenes s or lack of uderstanding of the deep meaningfulne s s being conveyed by Om. Does anyone know what effect(S) or Modle Amp Al C. is using??? Yes he's tuned D on a Rickenbacker . . . . Anyone??? The bass is like a motherf**ker . . . . . l o v e it!!!

Al Cisneros plays his bass like Thor swinging Mjolnir into someones face.

But who cares if Albini dug Nirvana and now digs Om, while The Angel of Anarchy only digs Om and absolutely detests Nirvana. That's his/her business. Another band which may fit in the Om/Sleep/Hig h on Fire vein would be Earth. They might even be considered derivative of the others, but their addition of a classic '60's organ to the standard stoner-rock instrumentat i o n is cool.
|
||
It is true though, if you open your ears and mind. I don't even smoke chronic and I can get hypnotized/a c h i e v e Nirvana, etc. to this stuff. Hey what does Albini have to do with it? Oh, he produced In Utero.

An interesting footnote for our dear Angel here is that Steve Albini produced Om's most recent album, Pilgrimage. I agree that Tool has nothing in common with Om. I would add that after listening to all of Tool's albums a good many times each, I have come to the conclusion that they are too wrapped up in technique and this makes their music stagnant. This might seem odd; that Tool could be boring, while Om taps into something more fresh and raw.

none of them-tool you gotta be kidding-high on fire-gallham m e r - s l e e p - s a v i o u r s - t h o s e are the correct bands. no fucckin debate on this.sleep-o m - h i g h on fire have formerley interchangea b l e members.

it's hard to accept that this band has more than likely broken up with chris haikus leaving but i trust the strength of the art that anthony cisernos can and has been producing. OMMMMMMMMMMM LIVES !!!!!!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
|
||
none of the above similar artists have anything to do with Om. Bands that are like them would be Sabbath, of course , High on Fire and Current 93.
