Otep
Biography
Otep got their start in late 2000, when singer/band namesake Otep Shamaya brought her Marilyn Manson-meets-Kim Gordon style of singing to a crew of musicians known only as Rob, Moke, and eViL j. The foursome began gigging around Los Angeles and scored a deal with Capitol solely on the strength of their live show (they'd not yet recorded a demo), releasing the Jihad EP the following year. Rumors of cannibalism and dabbling in the mystical arts helped add to their mysterious image, and they found themselves being complimented by the likes of Marilyn Manson himself for their antics. Their eighth live show ever was at 2001's Ozzfest, and Otep stepped back into the studio with Terry Date at the tail end of the year to record their full-length debut, Sevas Tra, which saw the light of day in the summer of 2002. That summer they again joined up with the Ozzfest tour, gaining a prime spot on the second stage. In 2004 the group released its sophomore effort, House of Secrets. Working with producer Dave Fortman (Evanescence, Mudvayne), Otep followed up three years later with The_Ascension and supported it on spring 2007 dates with Static-X. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
Selected Discography
Otep is standing on the shoulders of Karyn Crisis (the true innovator of this vocal style).

The first I heard of Otep was House of Secrets. Hearing her scream and wisper the secret syillbals of my forgot secrets shattered my illution of "wellness". All I can say, is if your fragile mind can't face your own demons, do not think to suffer through hers....and Thank you.

Otep is the greatest metal chick singer ever! She compares to nothing else! So don't compare her to flyleaf or i think someone said slipknot! For one flyleaf just plain sucks, its alright, but she is way too whiney, while otep is screams and moans (which is totally hot)...and for two, slipknot and otep should not even compare! I love slipknot also, but comparing them to otep is just insane! I would definitely turn lesbian for her! Wow! I feel better....lo l

Otep is nu-metal and a lot heavier. They don't sound like System of a Down either. Maybe a little bit like Slipknot, but not a whole lot... >_>
I can't believe they say Flyleaf is a similar artist. Saying the name of these two bands in the same sentence is a slap in the face to Otep. I fcking love this band!
My big bro introduced me to her, and my life has never been the same since! It was kind of funny seein my folks freak when their perfect peter priesthood went metal head! On a more mature note, though, they are definitely great musicians, and Otep herself is definitely the sh*t!
I love Otep, she unleashes the same feelings in me that Manson does. Keep it up!
Go Ot3p! This girl would turn me lezbo if she had a chance! Get your tap on with yer' strap on!

Despite the comments made below regarding live performance, OTEP truly is the best female-led 'rock' band I have ever heard. There are bands like Kittie, or Battle Of Mice that have some pretty amazing glutteral sounds... however OTEP is the glutteral moans of an abused girl who refused to 'take it lying down' so to speak... and for that... I tip my hat. I had never found something that really got to my soul, got inside of my head and gave me chills, until I heard Blood Pigs. I've been a fan sin
OMFG! This band sent shivers down my spine and unleashed emotions I've had buried for a very long time. Keep it up girl! You've got it all!!
To those who don't get it, Otep is more than a musical outfit they are very outspoken politically they have been since the first album, if you don't like politically charged music then you shouldn't listen, also if your going to say its angst ridden well think about those who it helps, i can remember reading an article where a girl used 'Jonestown Tea' to tell her mother that her father had been sexually abusing her sister and her
So all my praise for otep and her message |
Otep is horrible live... All they cared about was preaching about their opinions on the war. Otep, STFU and play so that the better bands can play.
Whoever says this girl is hot... must be drinking a LOT. |
Otep's message is what is important, and it should shine through all else. This band asks you to take your anger, and instead of ignoring it, instead of wasting it on hurting people or yourself, turn it into something productive. Turn it into art, turn it into a public service announcement , do right by those who have done you wrong. Stand up, speak out, strike back.

Otep was not good when I saw her perform live. She was quite obviously high or drunk & her performance was very sloppy- she did not care about showcasing her talent, the entire audience was dissapointed . She also had a very diva-like attitude, even shoving the DJ/Announcer apparently just because she felt like moshing while he was speaking. Maybe it was a one-time thing, maybe she was having a bad day. But it definitely turned me off to her as a good artist, if she performed that badly live.
Otep is in a world all there own. F**king awsome and they f**king make me feel alive.
OTEP, what more can be said, they are coming to town (Bmore) at the end of the month and I am so there. I am thinking of taking one of my coworkers with me to scare the hell outta her.
