Patty Griffin
Biography
The youngest of seven children, Patty Griffin grew up hearing her mother sing while doing housework and her grandmother's family sing on the front porch at night. In addition to listening intently to the Beatles, Griffin was fascinated by the music of Bruce Springsteen and Rickie Lee Jones. Although she acquired a $50 guitar and began writing songs at the age of 16, Griffin gave little thought to a career as a musician. After living in Florida for nearly two years, Griffin moved to Boston and married, and while her husband encouraged her to perform, she spent most of her time waitressing. However, upon her divorce in 1992, Griffin found herself on her own and began to perform in Boston-area coffeehouses. She quickly attracted attention to her well-crafted songs and gutsy vocals. After Griffin's over-produced demo tape reached the ears of a talent scout, she was encouraged to re-record it with just her guitar and voice. Within six months, the redone demo resulted in Griffin being offered a recording contract with A&M. The tape was later released as Griffin's debut, Living With Ghosts, and inspired comparisons with recordings by Tori Amos and Alanis Morisette. Griffin's second album, Flaming Red, was released in 1998.
Both records showcased the poetic lyricism, bluesy alto vocals, and melodic guitar picking that defined her style and brought her admiration. Four years later, Griffin appeared with a modest acoustic effort entitled 1,000 Kisses. While touring in support of the album in 2002, Griffin documented behind-the-scenes footage for a future DVD collection. A Kiss in Time, which appeared in October 2003, included coverage of the tour, interviews, and two full-length videos. A separate disc capturing Griffin's live stint at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium accompanied the package. Artists such as Lisa Germano, Emmylou Harris, and Buddy & Julie Miller joined Griffin for the recording of her fourth album, Impossible Dream, which appeared in April 2004. Almost three years later, Children Running Through was released. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

I've been following Patty for 4-5 years now and always come back to her in my collection. Her lyrics are timeless and her voice is true. Keep writing and singing Patty!!

Patti is a lyrical goddess with a voice like pure liquid serenity. I hope in my dying moments, her songs will be the last thing I hear, then I will pass over, calm, open hearted and ready to face the ultimate truth.

It's amazing how i get lost in the same world that she has come from in a singing family on a porch. She takes me places in my mind that no artist could ever dream of.Thanks Patty for all the places.

I ran across the room to find out the name of this artist I was hearing before it went on to the next song and I missed it!! Stupid Pandora One player doesn't let you scroll back like the web player does to find out who that artist was that pulled you into her world! ;) Gorgeous voice.

Great songs and a versatile, well controlled voice--what more could anybody want?

What hasn't/doesn ' t she share that you don't want to sit her down in front of you and reawaken that dream sequence she lived and then wrote/sings so longingly. I can feel her faith and pains like a Stevie Nicks but blusier and earthier.... o v e r and over again she speaks to my soul...

Patty Griffin has always caught my ear.
I caught her on "Austin City Limits" one night with Dave Matthews and Emmylou Harris - she did "Makin' Pies', and "Top of the World"...it was unbelievably great - and I was hooked. |
||
LOVE her! She is an authentic mix of the best of the artists you have listed with similarity. Only wish I was her.

I love all kinds of music, from country to classical, from blues to bossa nova, from rock to reggae, from folk to flamenco, from pop to punk, but at the age of 56 going on 57, I of late always return to Patty Griffin's music as just what the doctor ordered for the lonely old soul that I've become.
I can't wait for her next album. |
||
How blessed am I to live where this awesome talent lives? Her music moves me...
|
||
Patty is absolutely fantastic and I can't wait to see her when she comes to Portsmouth in February! I just love the hell out of her...
|
||
she makes you know it's okay to have exposed emotions, to cry when you're hurt, and importantly, to know you are not the Only One in the whole wide world experiencing these feelings, this lifestyle, this dream of muddling through
|
||
What a beautiful woman with beautiful manorisms, music,& words. A living breathing dream.

Patty has an angel's voice with personality to boot. I got hooked on her live album, A Kiss in Time, and she has gotten me through some very rough times in the last year, ending in the death of my daughter. She's got soul and a great big heart, and she can sing like no one else. Too bad no one knows of her - and I can't wait for her next album. I hear it will be based on the tour she is on now. Hurry, Patty - we love you!

Living With Ghosts is Patty's best, bar none! Some songs of note are: Let Him Fly, Not Alone, and my favorite, Forgiveness which showcases Patty's great range as a vocalist. Yes, as Greg states, she can bring you to tears. She is so very emotive and has the voice to carry it through. Small critique, her lyrics are at times, trite and redundant,"b u t we are not snakes..." or "called him chief because he was an indian." I'd like to hear more love covers in Spanish.

Patty Griffin's voice can carry any song. Whether it's about triumph or tragedy - you'll be moved by her story telling and simple melodies that reach you somewhere deep inside and hold onto you long after you hear the music.

Patti Griffin is my absolute favorite musician in the whole world. I have worn out several copys of living with ghosts. Nobody moves me like Miss Patti.

Patty is a Goddess, pure and simple. She's been a favorite of mine since "Living With Ghosts" and has never disappointed (though "Kiss in Time" doesn't begin to convey her greatness as a live performer). Saw her twice in concert and she brought me to tears ("Impossible Dream" tour). I can't say enough good things about her. She has broadened my musical tastes and I'm grateful.

...'Hard to find this much powerful poetry so beautifully sung. Also try Stones in the Road by Mary Chapin Carpenter.

I love Patty Griffin. I saw her open for John Prine and if you open for John Prine you must be good. Fell head over heels in love with her music. Heavenly Day is like a religious experience. Play it Loud!
