Phil Collins
Biography
Phil Collins' ascent to the status of one of the most successful pop and adult contemporary singers of the '80s and beyond was probably as much of a surprise to him as it was to many others. Balding and diminutive, Collins was almost 30 years old when his first solo single, "In the Air Tonight," became a number two hit in his native U.K. (the song was a Top 20 hit in the U.S.). Between 1984 and 1990, Collins had a string of 13 straight U.S. Top Ten hits.
Long before any of that happened, however, Collins was a child actor/singer who appeared as The Artful Dodger in the London production of Oliver! in 1964. (He also has a cameo in A Hard Day's Night, among other films.) He got his first break in music at the end of his teens, when he was chosen to be a replacement drummer in the British art-rock band Genesis in 1970. (Collins maintained a separate jazz career with the band Brand X, as well.) Genesis was fronted by singer Peter Gabriel. They had achieved a moderate level of success in the U.K. and the U.S., with elaborate concept albums, before Gabriel abruptly left in 1974. Genesis auditioned 400 singers without success, then decided to let Collins have a go.
The result was a gradual simplifying of Genesis' sound and an increasing focus on Collins' expressive, throaty voice. And Then There Were Three. . . went gold in 1978, and Duke was even more successful. Collins made his debut solo album Face Value in 1981, which turned out to be a bigger hit than any Genesis album. It concentrated on Collins' voice, often in stark, haunting contexts such as the piano-and-drum dirge "In the Air Tonight," which sounded like something from John Lennon's debut solo album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band.
During the '80s, Collins balanced his continuing solo work with Genesis with enormous success. In 1992, Genesis released We Can't Dance and began an extensive tour. Upon its completion Collins released Both Sides in 1993, and the record became his first album not to produce a major hit single or go multi-platinum. In 1995, he announced that he was leaving Genesis permanently. The following year, he released Dance Into the Light. Although the album was a flop, its subsequent supporting tour was a success. The Hits collection followed in 1998, and a year later Collins made his first big-band record, Hot Night in Paris. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Amazing artist- His passion & tone of his voice enter my core. He is simply a genius. I wish with all my heart I could meet him and ask him where he gets his inspiration for these songs. Amazing.

My best friend and I almost skipped our 8th grade graduation to see Phil Collins in concert. Our moms wouldn't let us though. "Against All Odds" still breaks my heart - great song.

Phil Collins has to be the BEST singer ever!! With his writing talent, you can hear his past experiences/ r e l a t i o n s h i p s in his songs, which is the most interesting feature of his music, IMO. Great talent and blends in well with other singers of the past as well. Here's a great job well done Phil!!! - BLUEBOY

Phil, if you ever happen to read this...pleas e do a second farewell tour! I just purchased the DVD and ofcourse its fantastic... j u s t like you!!
Why in the world would you come to a Phil Collins station just to say you HATE his music...wast e your time elsewhere! Phil Collins is a music legend, period.

I have seen Phil Collins in concert twice and Genesis once. The last solo concert was disapointing . Phil's voice is not what it used to be. He didn't have the energy he had in previous concerts. Save your money.
"Against All Odds" always takes me back to college & the one that got away... I think Phil has one of the most expressive voices in pop music & he's a pretty darn good writer, too.

I have quite a few of his CD's and am very partial to his song "One More Night" with the beautiful vocal over-trackin g that was done on it. Lots of nice harmonies and no matter how many times I hear it I still love it!
Also, "Another Day in Paradise" showed his versatility and his courage to tackle a more controversia l topic of homelessness . I would love to have the chance to see him LIVE in concert some day. Paulette Le Pore Motzko |

I've loved Mr. Collins music since I bought my first album in 1981, Face Value.
He has the most beautiful voice and his drum playing is superb. Always a fan, Diana |

Unfortuantel y , Tarzan is omitted from all of Pandora. I searched for it and couldn't find the soundtrack or the Broadway show. Boo :(
Pandora should also mention and list his "Tarzan" soundtrack for Disney, which is good, solid songwriting. . . or won't Disney let them?
please come to vegas i am 59 and your music is and always will be number one. your the best.
Phil if your reading this, I think it is time for the second final farewell tour! Make sure Houston Texas is on the list.
When I hear Phil sing, it's as if the words come from my own heart. What's not to love about that. And his voice is so unique, it's mezmerizing.
Both Sides is a vastly underrated album...even though it didn't sell well, it has some of Phil's best songs.
Phil Collins music has the voice that just draws you in, and once you listen to the actual lyrics! He just sung from the heart! He is a artist that everyone loves hear!
Ha - " cool white boy" ! Funny LA Girl ! The thing that bothers me about Phil Collins is that he pushed his great drum-playing aside to be a front man and singer. If he stuck with the drums it would have been cool, but I like allot of his stuff.

I love Savannah Mick so badly. I would kill if any body harmed her. I would give my mind, body, and soul to her. She's the Love of my life. There isn't a girl in the world I rather be with than her. I love with my whole heart. If someone gave me a Million dollar for Savannah, even though I need the money, I wouldn't take it because I love Savannah, and there isn't any price for me to give her away.
