Poe
Biography
Named for a halloween costume based on an Edgar Allan Poe short story, Poe gained a contract with Atlantic during the boom of female singer/songwriters during the mid-'90s. Originally from New York City, she moved around frequently with her parents -- a director and an actress -- but returned to New York at the age of 16 when they divorced. Poe enrolled at Princeton, and played in a band during her time there. Signed to Atlantic in 1994, she recorded an album with several producers and co-writers and released Hello the following year. The single "Angry Johnny" pushed Hello into the album charts, and during 1996 Poe supported Lenny Kravitz with a band including guitarist Darius Adkins, drummer Dan Jones, bassist Toby Skard and cellist Cameron Stone and headlined several tours of her own. Five years after her critical debut, Poe returned with Haunted, an album rhythmically adjacent to her brother, Mark Z. Danielewski's novel House of Leaves. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
I remember Poe being involved in a very messy legal battle with her label & was stuck in a gridlock with them. I think I heard that it got so bad that they refused to release anything she wrote and since she is locked into powerful contracts that she gave up making music all together to save some dignity. I saw a statement by her saying that she would never write music again. Quite a shame being that she is such an incredibly talented person. Her live shows looked like fun, too.

It's a shame Poe does not release more music, she is extremely talented.

I've loved Poe since the debut of "Angry Johnny" in 1996. She is a fantastic, super talented artist and I hope she puts out a new album eventually.
I've Loved Poe's style and lyrics from the very start when 'Angry Johnny' first hit the airwaves! I'm looking forward to another album as well...
Please Poe!!! Fingertips is my Personal fav- it's the song I snagged my Mr. H with..Thanks Poe!!! |

this girl is awesome. i hope she can put out a new album someday.

I've never heard of Poe before I heard "Control." All I can say is "oh, those contralto femsingers!"

i agree the "hey pretty" version with her brother is my favourite. and i'm pretty sure it doesn't get enough play.. anywhere. wish it would :)
you're ALL nuts - like 2 year olds fighting over a sandbox shovel, ridiculous

"there is an underground version of 'Hew Pretty' with her brother..." FYI that is not an underground version of "Hey Pretty" it is off the Haunted album, a sort of bonus track. I agree, it does not get enough play. |
Amanda, it's only a handful of miserable burger-flipp e r s who cause all the trouble.
there is an underground version of "Hey Pretty" with her brother, Mark, doing a voiceover which, naturally, never gets enough play - anywhere

Letting people talk to each other is never a good idea on the internet. You people wouldn't have the balls to call each other douchebags and stuff all the time in real life.

selecting the next song. These 400 attributes are combined into larger groups called focus traits. There are 2,000 focus traits. Examples of these are rhythm syncopation, key tonality, vocal harmonies and displayed instrumental proficiency.

You all need to quit f**king crying about how Pandora puts your precious Poe into the same genre as LeAnne Rimes!! If you knew anything about Pandora, then you would know why and quit b**ching about it. Look up Pandora Radio on Wikipedia douche bags.
While listening, users are offered the ability to buy the songs or albums at Amazon MP3, Amazon.com (for CDs), or iTunes Store. Over 400 different musical attributes (see List of Music Genome Project attributes) are considered when selecting the n |

Jenn, you're right. Poe and LeAnn operate in very different universes. I like Poe's lyrics, and the stories accompanying some of her tracks on "Haunted" are rather interesting. She's mysterious and New Agey, the sort of woman who piques my curiosity.
I agree with you phil, Hole is a P.O.S. band and isn't even good enough to lick Poe's poo crusted boots. How people still buy that band's albums is beyond me. Lack of taste I suppose.
I'm not much happier about a comparison to Hole than I am about the one to LeAnn Rimes though I hate LeAnn Rimes at least she CAN sing...
Thank you, Pandora, for taking down that awful "similar artists" comparison! :)
I was wondering where the heck the LeAnn Rimes connection came from too!? That feels like a slight on Poe and her artistic style, her musical brilliance, neither of which LeAnn Rimes could BUY! *shakes her head*
Haunted is an incredibly deep, almost mystical album. But Hello! was really GOOD for its time. It captured a lot of the spirit and energy of alternative rock in the mid-90s. I really hope we get some new Poe soon... |
Poe is a genius. Her album Haunted was ethereal, deep, incredible. I hope there is more to come from her in the future...alt h o u g h I'm not sure if there will be. It seems all her demons were exorcised by the end of Haunted.
I love Pandora, but I've got to take issue with them saying Poe shares a similarity to LeAnn Rimes. Huh? Whatever it is that Pandora was smoking when they came to that conclusion, I'd like to have some. |
I love Poe, listening to her got me thru a hard time. I also have an autographed poster of her she made out to me personally (woot!)
Haunted is a masterpiece. Hope she resolves her problems with her former record label because I need some new Poe tunes.

Exceeds the minimum requirement for angst, torment, suffering, etc. in 'Control.' The lyrics are powerful.

I wouldn't normally say this, but I let her get away with having that name. She is worthy. I wouldn't normally say that. I almost feel like a traitor for saying it, haha!
