The Postal Service
Biography
Named for the courier service that allowed them to trade song ideas while living in different locales, the Postal Service were a short-lived supergroup featuring Jimmy Tamborello (leader of the electronica bands Dntel and Figurine) and Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard. Adding to the project's star status were Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis and former Tattle Tale member Jen Wood, both of whom contributed backing vocals to the band's mix of bubbling electronica and indie pop. Tamborello and Gibbard first worked together in 2001, when Gibbard provided vocals for the title track of Dntel's This Is the Dream of Evan and Chan EP. From there, the duo continued to collaborate via mail, with Tamborello sending instrumental tracks and Gibbard adding guitars, vocals, and lyrics. The results were packaged into the group's only album, Give Up, which was released in 2003 by Sub Pop. The disc had sold over 500,000 copies by 2005, prompting the band's co-founders to begin work on a second album. Work stalled as both musicians founds themselves devoting more time to their main projects, however, and the Postal Service remained on indefinite hiatus for the rest of the decade. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

very relaxing sound...Some t h i n g I could listen to in everyone of my crazy moods :)

god, could there be a more feminine sounding band out there? what a bunch of sissies. emo crap.

Really love this band. I think it's more Ben than anything else. His lyrics are so intricate, so thoughtful, so darn GOOD! He's really an amazing singer and lyricist. Ben Gibbard, thanks for doing what you do. You've truly changed my life.
Because I firmly believe they both check Pandora's Postal Service bio page frequently, I will issue the following demand: Make more music. It is very good, and in many ways better than the music you both make with your regular bands. Thank you.
Owl City has nothing to do with The Postal Service or Death Cab for Cutie.
I swear comments seem to be more frequent on this page as time goes on. The economy may be bad but hey Jimmy, Ben... there's good money in a new TPS album. Just saying. |
I wish they would come back for hiatus. But then again, I'm pretty content with Death Cab for Cutie. n.n
I beleive Ben Gibbard is a very talented man....his music from both Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie has changed my life!
Isnt Postal service broken up? The last time I checked they were, so i dont think that they'll be putting out more albums anytime soon, if thats the case. But i love Death Cab, Postal service, Owl City, and anything related to them. they are very unique and i love their music!
So sad they haven't come out with anything else. I long await the day if and when it happens. I'm just worried that (if and when) they release anything more I'll be disappointed with it. They've put themselves on quite the pedestal with their first album...can they follow that?
Instead of getting mad at me for that comment, focus on a bigger issue: why do you listen to crappy music?
What does Postal Service have in common with Death Cab for Cutie?
They Both Suck. |
the singers voice is radical, it sounds the same live and studio. And its good quality. but postal service live is kind of boring, just a guitar and singing. None of that juicy techno back beat.
minty- they do sound poppy-- just fyi.
sama- thanks for the clarificatio n ! ! i had never heard that song before and i had never heard of the postal service, so thanks! i'm not a huge fan of techno/elect r o n i c y sounding stuff, so i still don't like that song and i'm not a big fan of the postal service. i do suggest everyone listen to Iron and Wine, he has such a beautiful voice-- not even kidding! P.S. Please don't yell at me for not being a giant fan. Thanks! |
Geez, the lyrics are so good, I wish Pandora'd post them.
Honestly, although Pandora got me started on a lot of great music, I wish they wouldn't take out good lyrics so much... |
I wish this band was still putting out music. I think they're just a fantastic blend of indie and techno(-ish style). I love the lyrics, everything.
Well, you should all listen to the acapella version by the pennharmonic s . Its quite amazing.
And beyond that, the Postal Service's version is much better than Iron and Wine's
sorry lizzie, but that's not true. iron and wine covered postal service's song
Good band- ruined Such Great Heights though. Betcha didn't know that's not theirs. If you like it, listen to the original by Iron and Wine. I'm not trying to trash them you guys, but they ruined that one song. LISTEN TO THE ORIGINAL! IT'S AWESOME!
Love, love, love these guys. I listened to their new album a trillion times in '03, forgot all about them until this year when I rediscovered them and fell in love again.
To me, The Postal Service's music is the perfect mix of joy and melancholy. The beats and sounds are upbeat, but Gibbard's vocals and the lyrics keep it from sounding TOO "poppy." It's the perfect music for when you're feeling down.
barely started listening to them today and they are great. But don't be surprised why radio stations don't play music like this, because they're in it for the money and for pleasing conformists who like music that isn't even music it's just noise.
Radio stations shouldn't paly play this. Why? so we can cry our eyes out boo hoo for days.
"WHY DONT ANY RADIO STATIONS PALY THIS!!!!!!!! "
Because its not profitable, and the media is run by blind conformity. (hence disney having its own radio station) |
The only question I have is...why the hell they used the postal service to collaborate (see bio) when they could have just used email? I bet they released their album in vinal. Regardless, some good tunes they cranked out.
Postal Service is without a doubt, a phenomenal band! It saddens me to see that 'Give Up' is the only album that we shall ever see...
Both Death Cab and the Postal Service have fantastic lyrics. I always loved music that gave lyrics their own stage, and encouraged that they be listened to. I prefer Death Cab's tone, but the Postal Service definitely doesn't fall short. :)
I agree, I like the Postal Service better than Deathcab. It's the electronica, even though I generally don't like electronica! It's a truly unique sound.
