Ray LaMontagne
Biography
With a voice that recalls a huskier, sandpaper version of Van Morrison and Tim Buckley, Ray LaMontagne joins such artists as Iron & Wine in creating folk songs that are alternately lush and intimately earthy. The songwriter was born in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1973; his parents split up shortly after his birth, and his mother began a pattern of moving her six children to any locale that could offer her employment and housing. As a result, LaMontagne grew up as the perennial new kid in school (when and if he went to school at all). He did graduate high school, however, and found himself working in a shoe factory in Maine when he heard Stephen Stills' "Tree Top Flyer" on the radio. The song amounted to an epiphany for LaMontagne, who made up his mind on the spot to become a singer and musician.
By the summer of 1999, LaMontagne had put together a ten-song demo tape that soon found its way into the hands of Jamie Ceretta at Chrysalis Music Publishing. The publishing house signed the young songwriter and teamed him with producer Ethan Johns, resulting in LaMontagne's debut album, Trouble. The record was picked up by RCA Records and released in the fall of 2004, impressing critics with such songs as the title tune, "Trouble," and the cinematic style of pieces like "Narrow Escape." A follow-up album for the RCA label, Till the Sun Turns Black, appeared in 2006 and widened LaMontagne's palette by incorporating horns and strings. Gossip in the Grain followed in 2008. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide

Just saw him in Boston . . . his music is amazing and I loved his takes in "Fruit of my labor" by Lucinda Willams and "Loretta" by Townes Van Zandt. i agree with other commentators - don't shout requests . . . let him choose the flow of music. LOVED the concert!

I just saw Ray live in Atlanta. I agree with an earlier commentator. Don't shout out what you want or distract him. Just let the man woo you and work his musical magic. It was a beautiful - for lack of a better word - experience to see him live.

His voice is comforting. Like coming home. Like enjoying a nice hardy beef stew with an aged scotch while you're safe inside, looking out on the pouring rain outside your living room window.

Better than those similar...an o t h e r good poet. Like many, would like to hear live (the only way to go). Love recordings, but they are only a way to remember what the artist was REALLY like. (certainly no offense to Pandora!).

A modern day Van Gogh...I met him outside a show in Indianapolis last year and although he is reclusive he was very personable.. . j u s t no pictures please. If you get the opportunity to see him, please just don't scream out what you want to hear...let the artist do his magic.

Am I the only one who thinks he sounds like Joan Armatrading? Not a bad thing, by any means. Just a little freaky coming out of a little white guy.
