Rhapsody Of Fire
Biography
Rhapsody is a metal outfit composed of Fabio Lione (vocals), Luca Turilli (guitar), Alex Staropoli (keyboards), Alessandro Lotta (bass), and Alex Holzwarth (drums). The group was formed in Italy in the late '90s by Turilli and Staropoli. They recruited Daniele Carbonera to serve as their drummer. The band was already working on a debut, 1997's Legendary Tales, before they connected with Lione (known as Joe Terry during his time in the band Labyrinth), phoning him from the studio to arrange for him to join them. The band followed up that album with an EP, entitled Emerald Sword, and the album Symphony of Enchanted Lands the following year. Shortly after the release of Symphony, Carbonera departed. His replacement was found in the personage of Holzwarth. They would not release anymore material until 2000 in the form of an EP (Holy Thunderforce) and an album (Dawn of Victory). In 2001, the group released Rain of a Thousand Flames and then in 2002, Power of the Dragon Flame. Symphony of Enchanted Lands, Vol. 2: The Dark Secret appeared in fall 2004; the following year the band was forced to change its name, choosing Rhapsody of Fire, due to copyright issues. ~ Gary Hill, All Music Guide

Plague:
Exactly. :) I think my favorite song so far is Lord Of The Thunder. |
Fifthed.
I'm trying to hear more stuff by these guys, I already love Emerald Sword and Unholy Warcry. Turilli seems like a fantastic guitarist! |
I hereby nominate the previous comment as understateme n t of the year.
thes gise are the s**t there almost godlike i wold like eny one try to top them
Holy crap, their lead singer has an amazing voice. Listening to the live performance of Emerald Sword - the intro where he's just warming up the crowds, singing without any backing or instruments - wow.
LOL.
I don't thumb down the power metal. That's why it ends up just being a power metal station again. I'm not complaining though. I like power metal. |
I also get a lot of hair bands. Probably from the Queensryche seed.
How do you thumb down the power metal tho? There is a significant amount of prog elements in most power metal. |
Yeah, I made a prog station and it just fell back into power metal.
RoF play on my progressive station as well. They seem to play quite a bit for me.
LOL. Epinikion... * s h i v e r s *
Good call on the french horn vs. trumpet. That comparison slipped my mind and is closer to what I intended. |
I get what you're saying, and see how it could be annoying. There are far more nasal screeching out there (Epinikion anyone? lol). I don't see the difference as great as a woodwind vs a brass instrument. More like the difference between a french horn and a trumpet.
@OMW: I don't really know how to explain it...there's a small tonal difference, and it really bugs me. His vocals just come across as sounding really whiny to me. The best way I can describe it is as preferring the sound of a saxophone to the sound of a trumpet. There's nothing wrong with his vocals, per se, but I just don't prefer to listen to them.
@Plague: I'm curious about your disdain for Timo's vocals. I was listening to Sonata Arctica's Tony Kakko yesterday right after a Stratovariou s song. The vocals sounds so similar to me that if the music was more similar, I would have a tough time differentiat i n g the bands.
It's never too late to give RoF a listen.
Nasally. That's the perfect word to describe what I dislike about his voice. Nasally vocalists are a surefire way to make sure that I won't set out to listen to a band on purpose. |
I actually like Stratovariou s a lot. Timo's vocals are actually similar to Fabio's, but with less vibrato, perhaps slightly more nasal. The music is more straight forward than RoF. Lyrically similar as well, but with less of an album-wide theme as RoF. Also, Stratovariou s songs are more metal-heavy guitar driven where RoF is more orchestrated .
Both are phenomenal bands and worth the time to give a listen. |
'Erian's Mystical Rhymes' ends with outro monologue accompanied by a soft violin and piano ... no drums at all actually. It must have been the live version.
K--that "tonight" turned into 6-days. But as they say ... better late then never eh? |
I suppose I should state that Timo Kotipelto isn't necessarily annoying, I just find his vocals grating after very long...
@Yoho: Nice. Think Sonata Arctica's "Reckoning Night" album, but with an annoying vocalist. Or just click it when you see it listed as a similar artist and listen to some of their samples. That way you don't have to break your chain, and you can get a taste for their style. That's what I do when I'm curious about a band.
I'm curious about Stratovariou s now since I keep seeing it listed as a similar artist and Pandora never seems to play it. I'd just add it, but that'd break the vast musical chain I have going where I can honestly say I arrived at power metal bands by seeding Sarah McLachlan, and that's just too much of a conversation piece to throw away!
Maybe if I seed everything similar that HAS already played... |
@OMW: It might be off the live one or something... I remember that one of their songs has an awesome drum solo at the end, but I don't remember exactly which one it is.
I have never seeded with Stratovariou s , and I hear it way too often. Timo Kotipelto's voice bugs the crap out of me. Same goes with Edguy/Avanta s i a and Tobias Sammet. |
@Plague: I'm not sure. I have the album, but don't recall any drum solos on it. I will give it a listen tonight.
One band that I have seeded quite often and NEVER hear is Stratovariou s . |
Did "Erian's Mystical Rhymes" have the wicked drum solo at the end? I remember that one came up ONCE, and I liked it.
Erian's Mystical Rhymes came up. I will have to keep a tally.
Heart of the Darklands. 1 per 8 hrs so far on my Battle Armor station. Last angels' call. I didn't listen on friday, so still 1 per 8 hrs average Power of the Dragonflame. Average is increasing! |
I jsut added them as an artist seed in on e of my stations, now its playing lots of their music!! yay!
Hmm, now I'm curious what the other songs of theirs I've thumbed up have been, since Unholy Warcry just showed up...
Quite cool regardless. |
@davidsz: I'm usually doing other stuff on the computer while listening to pandora, and I don't necessarily click over to see the title of the song. And I don't hear any of those songs incessantly, but when one of their songs does play, it's almost invariably one of those three.
Plague-
If you truly heard those songs that much you would know it's "The Last Angels' Call" and not cry. Just saying, I don't hear that song very much. I hear a different one more but I never focus on the name of it, warriors of ice or something like that. |
