Rick Springfield
Biography
Although Rick Springfield's music was frequently dismissed as vapid teen idol fare, his best moments have actually withstood the test of time far better than most critics would ever have imagined, emerging as some of the best-crafted mainstream power pop of the 1980s. A singer turned soap opera star turned singer, Springfield was born Richard Springthorpe on August 23, 1949, in Sydney, Australia, to a military man; the family moved around Australia and England a great deal during Rick's childhood, and he sought his escape from the difficulty of making friends in books and music. He formed a band in high school and eventually joined a '50s revival group called Rock House, moving on from there to join the teenybopper band Zoot in 1968. Zoot became one of the most popular groups in Australia until 1971, scoring several hits. Springfield went solo after the breakup and garnered his first U.S. success the following year with a re-recording of his Australian hit "Speak to the Sky"; the song reached number 14 in the U.S., but would prove to be his last major success for quite some time. Subsequent '70s albums stiffed, and record company difficulties prevented Springfield from recording after 1976.
In the meantime, Springfield had begun taking acting classes; he signed a contract with Universal Studios in 1980 and appeared on several television programs. Although Universal dropped him shortly thereafter, he was able to secure a recording contract with RCA on the strength of his demos; in the midst of recording his debut for the label, he was signed to play the young, eligible Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital in 1981. Springfield's popularity skyrocketed, setting the stage for the release of Working Class Dog later that year. Powered by the classic single "Jessie's Girl," which eventually hit the top of the charts, and the Top Ten follow-up "I've Done Everything for You," Working Class Dog was a smash success, and Springfield eventually returned to his first love of music when concerts conflicted with his television career. The follow-up, Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet, was released in 1982, spawning the Top Ten smash "Don't Talk to Strangers"; 1983's Living in Oz offered more of the same, including the Top Ten "Affair of the Heart," although it betrayed signs that the gears were beginning to wear down on the Springfield machine.
Springfield made the leap to the big screen in 1984 with Hard to Hold, which was much more successful at the box office than with critics; the soundtrack spawned his last Top Ten hit to date, "Love Somebody." His career seemed to bottom out afterward, although he recorded several more albums over the rest of the '80s, and continued to land television roles into the '90s. In 1999, Springfield returned with a new album, Karma. Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance and Day After Yesterday followed in 2004 and 2005, respectively. In 2007, Springfield released the holiday-themed Christmas with You, along with the Early Sound City Sessions collection. The following year, a live DVD documenting his ultra-popular '80s concerts (Beat of the Live Drum) was issued, as well as an album of all new material, Venus in Overdrive. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

I love his new CD. I too saw him in concert in Minneapolis. He was out interacting with the audience and seemed genuinely happy to be singing. Loved his concert and I love his music.

"Venus in Overdrive" is a great cd. So happy that Rick is still making great music. I saw him in Cherokee, N.C. this year. He is still full of energy and loving what he does at 59.
How about playing something from his new CD "Venus in Overdrive"? It charted on Billboard at #28 after one week of release and it rocks. Just saw him live a couple of weeks ago and Rick still has *it*!

Hey, Pandora. Do you think once in a while you could play something from one of this guy's albums other than the "Written In Rock" anthology? He's written more than the same five songs you keep playing over and over.
He was and still is THE MAN!! I have never had the opportunity to see him live but what I wouldn't give, I don't care if he's 80 he is still one of the sexiest men I have ever seen!!
His 1983 tour was the first concert I got to go to. It has great memories cause my mom took me and 3 of my friends to Memphis TN to see him, then she took us out to eat. I treasure these memories mostly because my mom is no longer living. I was CRAZY about Rick. My bedroom walls were covered with his posters. I still believe he is as sexy today as he was then.

Intresting tidbit:
Throngs of girls in the aftermath of 'Jessie's Girl' era proclaimed with pride, "This song is about ME... my name is Jessie!!!) Wait! What's wrong with this picture?? Just think about it. The Jessie in the song is a GUY! The girl has no name. So... If you're a girl and your name is 'Angela, LeeAnn, Rebecca, Carol, Diane, or any one of thousands of other names, then... (drum roll) This song could be about you. (Okay you Jessie girls. The song could be about you too.) |

For an almost 60 year old man he looks and sounds awesome. I have been a fan for 26 yrs.

I learned of Rick on "General Hospital" in the early eighties, at 16 years old. His music has been a constant in my life ever since, and helped me to get out of depression many times. My daughters love him as well, my youngest being named after one of my favorite songs. He will always have a fan in me, and three concerts just isn't enough for this lifetime. See you soon!
Let me think...The early 1980's without Rick Springfield? What a scary thought!
I absolutely love this man. I started going to his concerts in 1986 when I was in high school. I started falling in love with him before I even knew he sang. Yes General Hospital, Dr. Noah Drake. He puts on one heck of a concert. He is the ultimate.
Yes, I love Rick. The last time I seen him in concert was in 1982 and my sister and I loved him and we thought he was it. My sister got killed in a car wreck 4 years later after that concert and my husband and I are going to see him in concert 6/21/2008 at 9 PM in Cherokee NC and this will bring back so many good memories of my sister and I.......

I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF RICK'S SINCE HE APPEARED ON GENERAL HOSPITAL. I THOUGHT THEN AND I STILL THINK NOW,THAT HE IS THE FINEST THING TO HIT THE SOAPS. I LOVE HIS MUSIC NOW JUST AS MUCH AS I DID THEN ALSO. I HAVE HAD THE OPPURTUNITY TO SEE HIM IN CONCERT SEVERAL TIMES. THE FIRST WAS EARLY 80'S AND THE LAST TIME WAS ON APRIL 19, 2008 OF THIS YEAR. HE PERFORMED AT RIVERFEST IN VICKSBURG, MS. HIS SHOW WAS STILL JUST AS GOOD AS IT WAS 20 SOMETHING YEARS AGO. I THINK HE IS A FANTASTIC MUSICIAN/ACT O R &
I'VE BEEN TO SEVERAL OF HIS CONCERTS. BEST SHOWS I'VE EVERY BEEN TO. HE IS VERY PERSONAL WITH HIS FANS. I GUESS HE MAY KNOW THEM ALL BY NAME. MY FRIEND IS THE BIGGEST FAN I KNOW OF. SHE HAS BEEN TO HIS HOME IN VEGAS AND HAS SEVERAL SIGNED ATIFACTS. SHE STILL GETS STAR STRUCK BY HIM. AT ONE CONCERT I GOT HIS ATTENTION AND TOLD HIM TO GIVE HER A HUG. YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT SHE DEGRESSED 25 YEARS TO THE TEENAGER WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH RICK. SHE GOT HER HUG AND IT WAS SHOWN ALL OVER THE STADIUM.

Note on "Jessie's Girl": When that jerk finally won-over Jessie's girl, he soon did her wrong and dumped her!!! Can you believe it?? Seems like all he really wanted was 'getting the unobtainable ' . The thrill of conquest soon wore off. Jerk. Poor Jessie (he was last seen homeless, with a bottle in his hand). The rest of the story has now been told.
