The Rippingtons
Biography
One of the most popular groups in what is loosely termed "contemporary jazz," the Rippingtons were formed (and have been led ever since) by guitarist/keyboardist Russ Freeman (no relation to the veteran West Coast bop pianist of the same name). Freeman (born February 11, 1960, in Nashville) studied at Cal Arts and UCLA, and recorded Nocturnal Playground as a leader in 1985 for the Brainchild label, a one-man project. In 1987, he was approached to record for the Japanese Alfa label and came up with the Rippingtons name for the all-star group he used on the disc (Moonlighting), an ensemble featuring David Benoit, Kenny G., and Brandon Fields. Their album was released domestically by Passport and became a hit. Freeman soon formed a regular touring band (usually including saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa, bassist Kim Stone, drummer Tony Morales, and percussionist Steve Reid), cut a second disc for Passport, and the group recorded regularly for GRP. Russ Freeman writes all of the music for the Rippingtons, much of which falls in the pop/R&B genre. In the late '90s, the group moved over to the Windham Hill label, recording such albums as Black Diamond (1997), Topaz (1999), Live! Across America, and Life in the Tropics (both in 2000). For 2003's Let It Ripp, the band relied heavily on their horn section to carry the weight of the album. The Latin-flavored Wild Card followed in 2005. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Ive loved the Ripps for better than 20 years, my mom got me hooked on them when I was in High School. I wish Kim Stone would come back and play with them, I agree with mipetrone that something is missing, but still I love the older stuff. Cue up Jupiters Child or Sahara for me and Im good. Though you cant sleep on Six-Four!

I've been a Ripps fan since the beginning and have seen them at least 12 times over the years. I wan't impressed with the last show however. No percussionis t and there's just something missing when Kim Stone isn't playing the bass. In light of that I'm certainly not going to give up listening to the Rippingtons.

Everything Freeman's 'Rippingtons ' do is almost always stunning. However, I'm still in love with 'Welcome To The St. James Club' - every tune is worth a whole gig. Just love, 'Affair in San Miguel', and, 'A Kiss Under the Moonlight.' DAN VANGURA: go back and listen to their early stuff, too, then hang on for the ride! We'll hold the streetcar for you...there' s a par-tay on board!

I'm fast becoming a "Rippingtons " fan. I've heard some things that really rang with me, things that I've never heard before, expressions that honestly I wanted to unveil myself. It's about expression and color. All done without the ever prevailing notion that says "look at me". Bravo Well Done

Nothing but delight for Russ. The Ripps are a great band in which I own with the exception of their just released album,all of their gems. Can't go wrong as he constantly shifts with the times,defini t e l y earns the title "smooth jazz".

Started listening to The Rippingtons with Curves Ahead (on cassette format) and they still remain the best. Nothing like seeing them live. I see them every year in Temecula. (join me) Great date scene for the wife and I. I listen to them while I'm commuting on my R1200RT. Very relaxing in traffic. Really like Life in the Tropics. See them live and get Jimmy Hendrix for free.

These guys are the king of smooth jazz and I simply can't get enough of their music. I don't know how Freeman keeps cranking out beautiful song after beautiful song. Love to listen to them before I go to bed and while I'm in the car...keeps the road rage to a minimum.

I saw these guys in Denver awhile back. They played before George Benson. I think a lot of people were there just to hear the Rippingtons. They are awesome as they have a great sound live. Can't wait to go and see them again.

I was turned on to The Rippingtons by a rollerblader about 5 years ago. I have most of their albums. Love Black Diamond and 20th Anniversary best. But would really like to hear them live.

Can we get 'Curves Ahead' added to the library? One of my fave tunes is 'Take Me With You'!! 'North Star' (w/Dave Grusin) is great, too!

I saw them at a small venue in Connecticut called Infinity Hall last month. They seem to sound better with every concert. A band with true staying power, plus they really seem to be enjoying themselves onstage.

I caught the mighty Rippingtons in a 150 seat venue in Jacksonville in 1999 and I have been a fan ever since. That particular night they were phenominal especially Jeff Kashiwa.

Would love to see Russ Freeman and the gang live one of these days! ("Live in LA" is my favorite.)
|
||
I love this group, I was turned on to this group years ago by my mother listening to them.

I LOVE the Rippingtons. Got to see them in concert at New Orleans years back. Wow! What a show! Letter perfect! And the percussionis t tore it up! Jeff Kashiwa was with them and it was awe inspiring and the diversity of the crowd just cemented what I'd suspected all along. These guys are sensational - thanks Russ!

The Rippingtons with Russ Freeman are my favorites. l fell in love with them when l heard a track on their CD "Welcome to the St. James Club" in a friend car he allowed me to borrow it. By the time l returned it to him, l not only fell in love with every track on the CD, but anything Rippington with Russ Freeman. Their Artistic sleeve CD covers shows these guys are about the music and not necessarily get their their faces to the public for popularity sake.
It's true they are breaking up? if it' |

I put Rippington's CDs in my car and can drive for hours on end! It is amazing when you think of earlier members branching out on their own.... David Benoit& Jeff Kashiwa in particular.

The ballards are heart felt and provoking and soothing. Sahara is on CD luv Phil Perry on that one too.

||
I have been trying to find their album "Sahara" for quite some time. I bought a copy of it in 1996 on cassette, but would like to get a CD. Is it in print?
|
||
I also had a chance to catch them live in a small venue in Charlotte, NC
All I could say is WOW what an amazing sound and group Thank you Rippingtons. |

My wife has taken me to a few live performances in a very small location and I have to admit I have never had a better time seeing a band. The energy and sounds are just amazing, the guitar and horn work is fantastic and the bass player is excellent.
