Riverside
Biography
Drawn together by a shared love of metal and prog rock, Riverside were founded in 2001 in Warsaw, Poland, by Mariusz Duda (vocals, bass, guitar), Piotr Grudzinski (guitar), Piotr Kozieradzki (drums), and Jacek Melnicki (keyboards). The quartet members intended to use their backgrounds in metal to explore new territory in prog rock along the lines Dream Theater and Tool, creating spacious and experimental music with a metal edge. Even before their first record was finished, Riverside began to experience creative differences, with Melnicki (who was later replaced by current keyboard player Michal Lapaj) splitting from the group to pursue his own studio projects in 2003. Later that year, the band issued its full-length debut, Out of Myself, which was released the following year in the U.S. on Laser's Edge. After the success of their first record, the bandmembers got back to work on new material. In 2005 they released the EP Voices in My Head, gaining the attention of InsideOut, which released their second album, Second Life Syndrome, later that year. In 2007, after a European tour in support of Dream Theater, the group released Rapid Eye Movement. In 2009 they put out another studio record, Anno Domini High Definition (on Mystic Productions), which quickly became the best-selling record in Poland. ~ Gregory Heaney, All Music Guide
Selected Discography
FYI all prog lovers, I highly recommend Eidolon. It's more on the Speed Metal side but their latest offerings are defenitely on the Prog / Riverside of things. Specially the Album Nightmare World on Metal Blade.

I second the comments below, creating my PT station was the best decision I've ever made with respect to Pandora. Riverside is my favorite discovery since... well... Porcupine Tree. I just bought Second Life Syndrome and it's plain to see that they're absolutely phenomenal musicians and songwriters.

I love my Porcupine Tree station more than any other! Riverside is amazing~

I echo many on here; had not heard of Riverside until Pandora came along with my Porcupine Tree station. They have a great sound and, if you buy the CD's, you can really hear them beginning to mature. Would love to see them live. . .

Adding another voice to the choir - my Porcupine Tree station exposed this band to me.. Now I'm hooked on them along with Porcupine, Opeth, Ayeron, Perfect Circle, and all those others that dare drift the hazy border of art & metal rock.
INCREDIBLE band! Theyve never written a bad song, cant wait of the new album later this month!

I am digging this band on my Porcupine Tree radio station. In fact, I have never heard of Riverside before until I created this station. It is so nice knowing that good music is not lost as I previously thought. I could listen to this stuff for days and not get tired of it.

I am a HUGE Porcupine Tree fan, which is how I got to Riverside... this is really, really nice.
Wow--Porcupi n e Tree, Opeth & Dream Theatre fans will love this! A little Tool thrown in there as well!
I'm with dchuang. No speed metal here. Nice non-commerci a l pieces that and wonderful lyrics. Great blend of talent and abilities. Thanks to porcupine Tree for exposing this band to me.
dchuang3, I guess it's a bit similar to Opeth's sound on Damnation, but only vaguely. I'm digging it a bit, but it's nowhere near as nice to listen to as Opeth, IMHO.
I agree wholehearted l y with Mr. Schram. Great great great sound, awful lyrics. Whatcha gonna do?
So where is the bio? What, are you anti-Polsih? This ain't bad at all. Not what I want for English Blues, which is what is supposed to come out here, but I like them. Sort of an ELP, Floyd, etc. Even some Furs, yes. Interesting.
Reminds me a lot of Porcupine Tree. The singing style and the lyrics are pretty cheesey, but the music is very cool.
Riverside is GREATit make me want to live under a rock and eat rocks and throw them as well PS.... rocks
Riverside is one of the best progressive rock bands anywhere.
You would also like bass/vocalis t Mariusz Duda's solo project "Lunatic Soul" Great prog music coming out of Poland. |
WHAT IS IT WITH YOU PEOPLE AND ROCKS? I mean, it's almost like they grow on trees ... just enjoy the music, jeez! (p.s. good stuff)
Thanks to Pandora..... I , too, must have been living under a rock. This band is fairly significant! It was like listening to a walk through my music collection.. . .
I MUSTA BEEN UNDER A ROCK...THIS BAND IS INCREDIBLE.. . . T A L K ABOUT A MELODIC JOURNEY...TH A N X . . . J O E

Mariusz Duda is the creative driving force behind/in front for Riverside. The thematic trilogy of CDs they've released over the past few years encompasses a unique story. Not a single concept album, but three. All good music wrapping with the third disc Rapid Eye Movement. Mariusz Duda recently released a solo CD. If he and Steve Wilson aren't in synch with their various projects, they're not far off.

Touring w Dream Theater is a Big deal (Don't say that to Nevermore-bu t that's another story). Yes, I love Nevermore! Anyhow, Riverside are amazing. To disagree with a comment down below, Riverside is much more Jazz Fused and technical than Symphony X (which are more on the Metal side). Good luck to Riverside. Agree on the why didn't Riverside come to the Us with Dream theater. Bummer!
Riverside fantastic sound great melodies, breaks, beat sigs
the best thing out of Poland for long time to come. |
I have the "Second Life Syndrom" CD & to be honest it took me a little while to get into it. But after a few listens it really began to grow on me. Their music isn't super complex & the band doesn't have the technical virtuosity of the likes of Dream Theater, Symphony X, etc. but they play with such a tremendous amount of feeling that you can't help but get caught up in the emotion. I really want to check out their first CD.
I saw Dream Theater live, and it was awesome, but I want to know why they couldn't have had Riverside open for them on the USA tour like they did in parts of Europe.... It would have been so awesome, I just might have crapped myself...
Just heard The Curtain Falls from "Out of Myself." -wow- Quietness building to such power. Very like some of Porcupine Tree's style. Cool CD covers, too.
This is the best band out of Poland ever. Perfect mix of Pink Floyd,Porcup i n e Tree and Led Zeppelin. Music is superb!!!
Wow. From heavy Zep influence to dynamic downshifting . . . n i c e ! Great tones, good songwriting.
