Rodrigo Y Gabriela
Biography
Before they became the most visible flamenco duo of the early 2000s, guitarists Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero bonded over heavy metal while growing up in Mexico City. They combined their talents for a time in the metal group Tierra Acida, playing around D.F. in the roughest clubs the city had to offer. Though they recorded some material, Tierra Acida never hit it big, and an album was never released. Instead, Sanchez and Quintero concentrated on learning more guitar styles, teaching lessons during the day and playing bossa novas in hotel bars at night. Bored and frustrated with their chances in the Americas, the two decided to try their luck in Europe instead.
Rodrigo y Gabriela traveled to Dublin, where a friend had offered them a place to stay. The musicians spoke no English, carried little money, and upon their arrival found that their offer of European hospitality had vanished. The pair soon turned toward busking on the streets of Dublin, a move that enhanced their reputation and helped land them several contacts. Among their newfound friends was fellow busker Damien Rice, who soon asked them to accompany him on tour. The Mexican duo had, by this time, developed a large repertoire of original material in a variety of styles, and they released their debut record with 2003's Re-Foc. A concert album, Live: Manchester and Dublin, followed one year later.
Rodrigo y Gabriela became the newest fixture of the world music circuit, known for their nimble-fingered guitar work and diverse background (few flamenco guitarists could boast a background in metal music). Their third album, Rodrigo y Gabriela, was released in 2006 and debuted atop the Irish charts, beating out Arctic Monkeys for the number one spot. They continued to tour, making their way through Japan (as evidenced by their second live album, Live in Japan) and America, and 11:11 expanded their discography upon its 2009 release. ~ Evan C. Just saw them in Milwaukee for a 2nd time. Awesome to watch. Cool to see a female rocker--she has a lot of talent and I can't imagine how her fingers take the beating every day! Rodrigo is great as well. Seems that he takes her lead to me, but whatever it is, they do fantastic!

To sportsprophe t . . . Their music is a collaboratio n , only Gabriela can do what she does, she is able to follow Rodrigo's lead with perfection, her soul is alive in the music, without her they would not be the same, they draw energy from each other flawlessly, ebb and flow, she is truly irreplaceabl e

We saw them again in concert-9/21 / 0 9 Seattle. Just when you think they can't get any better. I'd ordered tickets when 1st available and had no idea they had a new CD (we have all their others...Pan d o r a is now missing two from above). Probably a good thing, 'cause we bought one at the concert, which they signed, afterward, and were gracious enough to allow my husband to take a pic with them. If you have a chance to see them, don't let it pass you by. My absolute GUITAR HEROS. Unrivaled.

Hey I was at the Denver show. Knew about them for a few years. Saw them last year at the Mile High Music Festival. They have such respect for their fans, get their fans into the concert and love to play. True musicians for their love of music and love for their fans. AMAZING guitarists and song writers.

Their cover of Metallica's Orion came up on Pandora in my Latin Guitar station and I did a total double-take. it was like, wait a minute, I know this song...A latin cover of Metallica?! Hell yes! Bought their self-titled, waiting for the next disc.

Saw them three times now in Portland. These two are so phenomenal in concert. I was blown away! I have been going to concerts since 1969 with Jimi Hendrix. I have seen hundreds of acts and I must admit this is one of the most engaging, powerful, talented, and outright incredible acts I have ever seen. When they come to Ptown I go; period! Do yourself a favor and see them live.

My husband and I saw then them live at Seattle's 2007 Bumbpershoot - - w e got there early enough to be the closest we could possibly be...they were outstanding. Their music was good enough to put both Metallica and LZ to shame--let's hear their UNPLUGGED VERSION!! These two kids are unbelievably
