Russian Circles
Biography
The post-rock/experimental trio Russian Circles features Mike Sullivan (guitar), Colin DeKuiper (bass), and Dave Turncrantz (drums). The instrumental group formed in 2005 in Chicago, and together they create a complex clamor of sprawling guitars, propulsive drumming, and heavy basslines. That same year, Russian Circles self-released their eponymous EP. Two limited-edition pressings sold out quickly. Enter marked their full-length debut for Flameshovel in spring 2006. A performance at the annual South by Southwest conference in Austin, TX, and a brief U.S. tour with Minus the Bear and Chin Up Chin Up coincided with its release. Prior to Russian Circles, Sullivan and DeKuiper were members of the eclectic instrumental act Dakota/Dakota, whereas Turncrantz produced an emo-punk ruckus with Riddle of Steel. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

good. For something similiar yet a bit heavier and darker try TRENCHES. |

I think what others mean when they say this music is "emotional" is that Russian Circles has a way of going through a range of emotions instead of sticking to one thing. Also IMO Station is definitely better than Enter. Geneva is even better than Station. Brian Cook is a much better bassist than Colin.

amazing band live...they were headlining and we were just going to leave before they started but then paused and rocked the f**k out

@ Jeremy Yamma: You have a good point. All music should have an emotional connection to the audience. I think when everyone talks about "emotion" here they are referring to the type and intensity of the connection with this band.

I was first turned on to this style of music when I seen Neurosis in PGH- they blew me away I'll never forget the mix of music and video that made my senses dance-crazy, cool, and calm.

hats off to these guys! pretty amazing i must say. my roots in this genre are pelican, jesu, isis, red sparowes and we cant forget neurosis. through pandora i've now been introduced to fresh sounds from explosions in the sky, the mercury program, mogwai, maserati, russian circles and many more. i gotta say i think there is something in the air and it smells fantastic! pandora rocks!
This is why i love Pandora, never would have found this on my own. Also, Explosions in the Sky kicks a**.

Jeremy, I see where people come from. For me, this music is really emotional, as is all the music I listen too, but this stuff especially brings out emotions. And I find this one amazingly full of emotion. I think people just mean that the emotion conveyed in this music is something that people are more able to relate to than other music. Personally I find a lot of instrumental stuff amazing. People should check out explosions in the sky.

HA you guys are creaming over this band in the comments, which is, hey, good for you. To me, its sort of like instro rock lite for the crowd who never really listened to intrumental music before..."I love how emotional they sound." But I gotta make fun of that comment...as opposed to what? What music do you listen to that's cold and soulless? Almost everything you listen to should convey emotion of some sort, I mean isnt that the bond between artist and audience?

Utterly amazing. I saw them live a few times, and while I love their studio cd's, I don't think you can truly appreciate them unless you see them live.

This band is insane live , not only because its a 3 piece but mike sullivan makes it sound like a 4 piece by the way he uses his loop station . Go see this band live and watch him loop his different guitar lines its amazing , not to mention looping is very hard to do live because you have to be so precise
These guys are amazing to see live. while their studio stuff is great, I don't think you can truly appreciate it 100% without seeing them live.
