Shinedown
Biography
Melodic hard rockers Shinedown hail from Jacksonville, FL, and originally featured vocalist Brent Smith, guitarist Jasin Todd, bassist Brad Stewart, and drummer Barry Kerch. Snapped up by Atlantic Records during the early-2000s flurry of post-Creed and Nickelback signings, the group released its debut album, Leave a Whisper, in 2003. Whisper ended up doing quite well for the band (eventually going platinum), aided by its single, "Fly from the Inside." Shinedown also supported it with a heroic slate of live shows, remaining on tour for most of 2004. The following year the band issued a live album documenting those shows, then returned in October 2005 with its sophomore effort, Us and Them, which went gold. The band underwent a few lineup changes in the years to follow, re-emerging in 2008 as a quintet that included Smith and Kerch along with guitarists Nick Perri and Zach Myers and bass player Eric Bass. The long-awaited Sound of Madness, featuring Grammy-winning producer Rob Cavallo (Goo Goo Dolls, Green Day), arrived in July. In 2009, the band parted ways with Nick Perri and continued on as a quartet. ~ Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide

While I actually quite like Breaking Benjamin, I concur that they are not terribly similar to Shinedown, or a great deal of the other groups Pandora seems to think they are similar to (a surprisingly large list, heh).
I'd compare Shinedown more with groups like Default than anything on that list, and interesting enough Pandora actually agrees with me - Shinedown is listed as a similar artist on Default's page (along with Breaking Benjamin, ha ha!). |
the only really bad band up there is Breaking Benjamin and theyre alright sometimes... but yeah, none of em are too much like shinedown...
Kickass band, but like most remakes... "Simple Man"... shouldn't've been 1... haha. well, I've heard worse... I love Seether's remake of "Careless Whisper", though...
If you're truly looking for a similar artist I would recommend The Headstones or Big Wreck. Or Thornley...w h i c h is basically Big Wreck re-branded (sort of).
For that list of similar artists, I'd say that's the most ridiculous statement,
Pandora has every given (I know it has been generated by the connection of who also likes Shine Down & what they also like) ... but i think Shinedown is far much better, Staind may be alright ... however Seether & Three Days Grace suck and Breaking Benjamin & 3 Doors Down blow ... No need to say sorry, I'm just expressing a little opinion is all... (I really don't dig "radio-rock" , but this is o.k. |
yup work is boring...but school's even worse! im in comp class rite now. hella boring.
shinedown's a good band. love their song "second chance". |

My God, is there a better singer in rock today???? NOT!!!!! Brent Smith is simply the best...nuff said.

they are amazing with the post grunge music that they play and the insane haromony its just flatout amazing

I'm not entirely in agreement with Punk Guy. If you listen to bands that are obviously metal, Megadeth, old Metallica, Iron Maiden, you will find complicated song structures and more than 3 chords. Bands like this one, Seether, etc stick to 3 chords and the same simple verse-chorus - v e r s e - c h o r u s - b r i d g e - c h o r u s song structure. I would say this is the difference between hard/alt rock and metal. The sound is close to the same, but it's set up completely different.

listened to them since they first came out hopeing to see alot more
luv it |

Hard rock is metal. They share so much that they are indistinguis h a b l e . Maybe in the 80's you could say that, but now in the 21st century they are linked at the hip. And the blues was instrumental in the foundation of metal. The riffing, or as they called it back then, vamping. If you played an instrument, then you'd know that they are the same damn thing. They are metal, they riff, some of their songs are tuned to signature metal tunings, and metal tempos. They are metal.
This is more like hard rock and blues on a faster tempo. Don't put them in the area of metal.
Shinedown has pretty good sound, but their lyrics and the singing seem familiar and not very exciting.
Shinedown is one of those bands that won't set the world on fire with their musical innovations. I like Shinedown, but they are so entrenched in their arena rock that they cant see all the innovation happening in metal. Look at bands like Apocalyptica , KMFDM, or Emperor, who have made metal interesting, they did not get there by sitting in their niche, they did it by being ballsy and throwing convention out the door, Shinedown should do that and they could be legendary.
Chocolate Thunda, no offense but you seem a little...how do I put it...strange .
Taken taken taken lol Sorry ranter Devour Pawns!!!! (yeah i spelled it that way so what dont have a freaking heart attack!!)
Woooooo!!! Go SHINEDOWN!! +DEATH TO YOUR GODS+ |
These guys have always had commercial appeal. I like everything I've heard from these guys except Devour. That song is terrible. Your right Ryan, Leave A Whisper is going to be a classic before all is said and done
Their newer stuff isnt as good. Leave A Whisper is their best CD. Their new stuff is all too mainstream.
