Sigur Ros
Biography
Named in part after a sister of one of the bandmembers, Reykjavik, Iceland's Sigur Rós (Victory Rose) was formed by guitarist and vocalist Jon Thor Birgisson, bassist Georg Holm, and drummer Agust. Formed in early 1994 while the members were teenagers, the trio's first recorded song earned them a deal with Iceland's Bad Taste label. Their sprawling debut LP, Von (Hope), was released in 1997, followed the next year by a collection of remixes from that album, Recycle Bin. Kjartan Sveinsson joined the band on keyboards and the band recorded 1999's strings-heavy Ágætis Byrjun (Good Start), earning themselves numerous accolades in their homeland and achieving platinum status in sales. Agust then departed and was quickly replaced by Orri Páll DýRason.
Svefn-G-Englar, their first release to be distributed outside of their native country, was hailed as NME's Single of the Week during September of 1999, launching a press hype steamroller in the U.K. and -- to a lesser extent -- in the U.S. The "Ný Battery" single was issued in early 2000, the band's breakout year. British independent Fat Cat began distributing the band, stretching their reach beyond Icelanders and rabid journalists. April dates in England with Godspeed You! Black Emperor were capped off by an appearance at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival, and they also opened several dates of Radiohead's European tour before year's end.
Sigur Rós spent the first three months of 2001 away from the road, setting up their own studio and making their third album. Meanwhile, Ágætis Byrjun found a label in the U.S. and worldwide press became increasingly positive and varied; both Entertainment Weekly and The Wire ran features on the band. The group began touring again in April, playing more shows in Europe, a handful in the States, and several more in Japan throughout the remainder of the year. By the end of the year, Ágætis Byrjun had won the Shortlist Prize for Artistic Achievement in Music; it was also declared Iceland's Best Album of the Century.
2002 saw the release of ( ), Sigur Rós' third album. The majority of the material was honed on the road prior to being recorded at Alafoss, the group's studio, located outside Reykjavik. The album featured a raw sound in comparison to its predecessors and scaled back the extreme highs and lows that were prominent on Ágætis Byrjun. Three years later, they released Takk..., featuring some tighter arrangements and brighter tones. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

I found Sigur Ros at the theatre while watching the movie Vanilla Sky. There was the hipnotic sound of Svefn-G-Engl a r playin throughout the movie. I immediately went out and purchased the Vanilla Sky cd. Recently I investigated and found more Sigur Ros. Ausome!!!! Keep on rockin' Sigur Ros from a fan in America.

The only band that gives me out-of-body experiences when I listen to them.
some songs are hopelandic, some are icelandic, one is in english (All Alright from Med Sud et al)... there might even be another language floating around somewhere...
I recently found Sigur Ros because Track 7 from () was featured on a Dead Space trailer. Wonderful work.
I was wondering if anyone knew if all of their music was in Hoplandic or if it was just (). Since it's made to sound like Icelandic, I can't really tell the difference. |
did you just ask if they are the real thing leccesecolo? i would suggest listening to more of their stuff and going to a concert...be c a u s e they are.
i learned about them from my favorite artist- Sabrina Ward Harrison, you should look her up. She is an amazing woman!
I like this music but also feel cautious about admitting it. Is it just New Age ear candy with slightly brighter guitars? Are these guys the real thing or just another Moby flash producing background music for car ads and yoga studios? In any case the piece they released last year featuring a symphony orchestra and choir is quite lovely and the lead singer can really sing.
I love their music, i have no clue what they are saying but it's beautiful. I think that's what i like about it. There is a mystery to it and I just get to enjoy it for what it is and not try to figure it out.
I can totally relate to what ajfox18 said; I often cry about my life when listening to Sigur Ros.
This music can make you do anything. energy to climb a moutain, or at the same time just hit you emotionally and you break into tears for no reason.
Lifes about finding out who you are.. and what you are.

theirs is truly the music of dreams - sleeping and waking. an amazing group of musicians.
The imagery they convey can be delicious. An impressive feat for a band that mostly sings made up sounds strung into harmonic phrases. Pure musical dynamic I do declare. I defy anyone to find sounds quite like these

They capture emotion like few can, their minds are beautiful. If anyone knows anything else like this email Gavinisbored @ a o l . c o m or IM me.
just started listening to these guys, i really like what i hear. even though i have no idea what he's saying, i can still feel the emotion in the music. they create the kind of music where direct lyrics are not necessary to enjoy what is being heard. cheers
Could it be the cold weather(Icel a n d ) or the lack of daylight(Ice l a n d again) that make these guys so damm gloomy. I like the guys but, come on, every song? Stay away from the medicine cabinets SR.
