Silversun Pickups
Biography
Brian Aubert (guitar/vocals), Nikki Monninger (bass), Christopher Guanlao (drums), and Joe Lester (keyboards) comprise the swarthy indie rock stylings of Silversun Pickups. The quartet's textured melodies capture the hypnotic dream pop threads of My Bloody Valentine and pop bitter sweetness of Earlimart, and such a blend has wowed their native L.A. since 2005. Silversun Pickups issued their debut release, the six-song Pikul EP that same year while shared show dates with the likes of Brendan Benson, Dead Meadow, Two Gallants, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club followed into 2006. Produced by Dave Cooley (Rolling Blackouts, Citizen King, Smash Mouth), their full-length debut Carnavas, arrived in July. The group got the word out with some intensive international touring throughout 2006 and 2007, supporting OK Go and Snow Patrol in the U.S. and Foo Fighters and Kaiser Chiefs in the U.K. and Europe. Their second full-length, Swoon, hit the shelves in 2009 and made a strong showing with its first single, "Panic Switch." Also out in 2009 was the five-track sampler Connect Set. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

That's not saying much considering how crappy Muse's new album is...I resist the urge to puke when I hear anything off it. All kidding aside, I hope their (SSPU) next album is as good as Carnavas and Pikul, Swoon is growing on me, but I really hope that they continue to make good stuff...

have loved them since i got pikul, in la, a few years ago, and think its some great, great, driving music

Picked up "Swoon" about a month ago and have to say that I am digging it. I agree that they do sound a bit like SP - I find some strong similarites with Gish but as KyleMull said there ain't nothing wrong with that!!
plenty of people say they are like smashing pumpkins or sonic youth, doesnt make it an insult, in fact its a compliment
just saw them live with cage the elephant, best concert ive ever seen, beating NIN and janes addiction surprisingly |
because there is no billy cochran in the smashing pumpkins.
it's billy corgan. are you kidding? |
why hasn't anyone heard the connection to billy cochran of smashing pumpkins
In my opinion and others (read it somewhere) SSPU are "shoegaze", so if you want to find similiar bands, google that and you'll see the history and some suggestions. My fist suggestion is to try out Swervedriver . In my opinion one of the most underrated bands...oh and Swoon is starting to grow on me...
I GET TO SEE them and MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA FRIDAY!!!!!! greatest show ever!! :)
Can someone help me find some similar bands to SSPU?
Other than pumpkins. |
I don't even know what to think about this band. At first I had my pointer over thumbs down, then I blacked out and woke up without hands, just bloody stubs. They have a scary vibe that I cant help but love. Slowly becoming one of my favorite bands. Wicked sick album art too.
Are you kidding? I like both bands, but it's undeniable that they have a great deal of similarity, whether they were influenced by SP or not. Fuzzy guitars, surreal lyrics. They also appear to owe a debt to Autolux. (Btw, BOTH bands channel MBV.) So stfu, everyone.
Yeah this does not sound like The Smashing Pumpkins. Maybe with some influence but definitely not the sound. Are you just a fatty mittens muffin tits, Tommy?
Tommy this doesn't sound like smashing pumpkins, besides the originality.
dunno who writes/build s the damn "genome" here, but y'all missed the crashing bus that hit you whilst you stepped the curb... is this not The Smashing Pumpkins f**king regurgitated ? . . . really? 'Cause that's all I hear in this ditty...
For some reason I didn't want to like SP but I can't help it. I like 'em. Thoughtful, but not boring and self centered.
I can hear the Pumpkins influence for sure. I'm glad there are more bands out there with this sound, not afraid to experiment a bit and step outside the mainstream, the bandwagon is full already!
Great band! They truly have gone beyond their Pumpkins influences in the making of Swoon, and are charting their own path.
Truly an amazing band. Very eclectic and funky. I can see these guys making it big.
Favorite band ever, honestly. Pikul's definitely got the strongest sound out of all their albums. Think they sort of lost it with Swoon; just not the same.
I don't know, but I am simply addicted to SSPU, the sound is strange in that very cool way and I actually appreciate the lyrical sound more knowing the lead singer is male.
trivia: the name "silversun pickups" comes from the liquor store silversuns liquors where they would run to pick up booze/ciggy' s etc. &&P
if any comparison is to be made, they sound more like "knapsack" (now "jealous sound") than anyone else. check it out. |
Rodya, this site fails to mention that Nikki does backups on literally every song. its really a blend of their voices.
all about the silversun pickups, such a different sound, and i love his voice!
the soft breathy vocals remind me of the Pixies and the melodic driving guitars and back beat remind me of placebo....I haven't listened to much but "Lazy eye" rocks!
Kind of freaks me out. I've been listening to this band through pandora a fair bit (they seem to show up on every station I make), but when I finally get around to reading their page, I find out the lead singer is a man? The hell?
Sounds like a woman ... a nice voice, but very very female. |
