Sister Hazel
Biography
Combining elements of acoustic rock, folk, and jangle pop, Sister Hazel formed in 1993 in Gainesville, FL. The band's five members all boasted ties to the city's local scene; vocalist/guitarist Ken Block and guitarist/vocalist Andrew Copeland canvassed the coffee shop circuit as a duo, lead guitarist Ryan Newell honed his chops with the local band Waterdog, bassist Jett Beres studied his instrument while pursuing a degree in architecture, and drummer Mark Trojanowski played with several Florida-based jazz ensembles before pursuing a career in pop music. Forging an earthy, melodic sound that highlighted the band's vocal harmonies, Sister Hazel released an eponymous debut in 1994 before moving to a major label for their second album, 1997's Somewhere More Familiar.
"All for You" topped the adult alternative charts during the summer of 1997, nearly reaching the national Top Ten in the process, and the success propelled the album to platinum status. After touring heavily and taking another turn in the recording studio, Sister Hazel returned in the summer of 2000 with a follow-up album, Fortress. Released by Universal Records, the album was cut from the same pop/rock cloth as its predecessor, and "Change Your Mind" enjoyed modest popularity as a single. Fortress still failed to match the band's early success, however, and Sister Hazel were no longer part of Universal's roster by the time their next album, Chasing Daylight, appeared in 2003. They returned a year later with Lift, and despite Sister Hazel's relative absence from the airwaves, the group continued to cultivate a respectable grassroots following, using the internet to their advantage and touring relentlessly.
Sister Hazel continued releasing albums to a small yet loyal audience, including 2006's Absolutely and a live studio performance album entitled Before the Amplifiers: Live Acoustic. As the decade drew to a close, the band released its seventh studio album, 2009's Release. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Interested in Sister Hazel because you liked the single you just heard? Check out their acoustic album _Before The Amplifiers_ and you will think these guys are great. They really shine live--terrif i c harmonies and fine guitar work by a band that really plays well together. They're better than their singles would have you believe, I think. I'd love to see them in concert.

Good little group; never heard of them 'til they popped up on one of my playlists. Thanks again, Pandora.
P.S. Ya gotta love a music review that can use a word like "eponymous" without blushing. |

I REALLY WISH THEY WOULD DO MORE CONCERTS IN THE WEST. I THINK THEY ARE AMAZING BUT WON'T BE ABLE TO SEE THEM UNLESS THEY COME OUT HERE.
GREAT LOCAL BAND!!! MY HUSBAND WENT TO SCHOOL WITH MARK THE DRUMMER.
FROM ONE BAND GEEK TO ANOTHER.. YOU ROCK!!!!! |
Saw them live at The Swamp on Okaloosa Island here in Florida. Great show. They really deserve more radio & media exposure than they get.
They need to get Before the Amps up here--their acoustic stuff is amazing!
My cousin taught the lead guitarist of this band how to play the guitar. Thank God he did. This band is AWESOME!

I thought that Your Winter off the Fortress Album was one of their more popular songs. It gained a lot of traction after being featured in the movie "10 Things I Hate About You". They don't mention any of that in the bands bio. Anyway, I've followed these guys since 1997. Love 'em. Check out the acoustic album versions of Chasing Daylight and Lift. Definitely worth a listen!

"Somewhere More Familiar" is one of my favorite albums and its sad that not more of those songs are popular. "Starfish" is awesome.

i cant believe how much i realized i am so sheltered from the good music of today and this band is one that made me realize this. They have very good vocals and smooth sounding music..Flawl e s s . . . a n d their songs all have different awesome sounds (not 2 of their songs are alike unlike many other artists of today) TGFP(thank God for Pandora)

I first heard of Sister Hazel when "All For You" hit the radio. I was hooked on the lyrics and the harmony. I've got great respect for a band who can please not only the ears, but the heart and mind as well. I love to write, and Sister Hazel has been one of my many choices to drift away to while I write.

Interesting that you'd think that Sister Hazel is big. I'm so glad that I found Pandora because I get introduced to groups like Sister Hazel. It isn't like I have been living under a rock but let's face it music has been marginalized by media. Signed - Hawk

The bio is wrong on one thing. Somewhere More Familiar went to platinum status. I know this because the platinum record is hanging up at Napolotano's ; a local Italian/Amer i c a n restaurant in Gainesville, FL off of Tower Rd. and Newberry RD. The place is known for good food and live music on the patio on Sundays, which Sister Hazel played regularly before going big.. I used to dj karaoke on Fridays when I lived there and saw it in the front every week. They're awesome live!

I never heard of them before, but the song I'm listening to sounds great.
