Soilwork
Biography
The Swedish metal sextet Soilwork formed in early 1997, fusing the country's signature ultra-heavy death metal sound with the power-groove riffs of late-'70s, early-'80s British and European metal. Vocalist Bjorn "Speed" Strid, guitarists Peter Wiches and Ola Frenning, and drummer Henry Ranta were all veterans of the Swedish scene by the time they recorded their first demo, In Dreams We Fall into the Eternal, in 1997; bassist Ola Flink became a permanent member afterward, as did keyboardist Carlos Del Olmo Holmberg. Their official debut album, Steelbath Suicide, was released in 1998 and wound up landing Soilwork a U.S. deal with Century Media. The follow-up, The Chainheart Machine, appeared in 2000. Predator's Portrait followed a year later. The band kept up the momentum yearly with Natural Born Chaos in 2002, Figure Number Five in 2003, the Early Chapters EP in 2004, Stabbing the Drama in 2005, and the Sworn to a Great Divide CD/DVD in 2007. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

it doesnt state in the comment that bodom or arch enemy are better or worse, just says you cant classify them in the same catagory as maiden or metallica... m a y b e read it a little better first |
How can anyone say Iron Maiden is s**t and then say Children of Bodom and Arch Enemy are better. I like CoB a lot, but they would be nowhere without the influence that Iron Maiden gave to the thrash bands who in turn gave to CoB and other melodic death metal bands. And if you don't think Iron Maiden influenced thrash bands significantl y , then listen to "Tormentor" by Slayer and "The Enemy" or "Medusa" by Anthrax. Those songs sound like they were written by Iron Maiden themselves.. .
mr. gibsonzero, how can you classify maiden and metallica in the same sentence as bodom or arch enemy or at the gates?! maiden just sucks, period. and metallica may be the trunk of american metal, but no way, shape or form did they structure any swedish/finn i s h / o r any of the other scandanavian metal scenes...not at all!! and also new metallica is like watching a dog s**t, its disgusting and nasty but you just can turn away
i hear no children of bodom in there at all. or avenged sevenfold... they are pretty much exactly the same as ur Killswitches , As I Lay Dyings and All that Remains. The fact that such a heavy band as In Flames is lumped in with this garbage is stupefying. if ur a person who likes heavy metal, maiden/metal l i c a / s l a y e r / a t the gates/kreato r / a r c h enemy/bodom etc.. move along... there is much better s**t out there

Love these guys. I recommend A Predator's Portrait, Figure Number Five and Natural Born Chaos. The older albums are heavier and focus more on the prog aspect. After Figure, the band started moving toward a smoother feel with more emphasis on keyboards. Stabbing is the best example of this, while Sworn is more of a mix of the two extremes. The guitar work on A Predator's Portrait is probably this band's master work, in my opinion. I love Strid's range of voiceshe is one killer vocalist.

This is like a strange mix between Avenged Sevenfold, Children of bodom and Killswitch Engage.
The prog adds the finishing touch, man gotta love that keyboard + guitar prog chords. |

I'm working on finding out what i might want to buy first... I'm not sure, b4innova.
STAGD sounds good to me, but one song from FNF was good too... I just got into these guys, lol |
I just got "sworn to a great divide" and its been with me nonstop for three days now. I hope they don't f**k with the lineup because this sound is working.
people! i only own stabbing the drama from soilwork. any recomendatio n s on the next one i should buy? anyone?
godsmack? really? more mainstream than metal. there not bad, but there not metal. i think they sound better acoustic.
solid sound, what they do is tight, granted the singer i,snt working with a 4 octave set of pipes but he stays within himself well and gets the job done.soilwor k puts it down just about right.

Is Soilwork, Disarmonia Mundi related to the band Soil at all? I like all three and it seems like the lead singer is freakin everywhere.
Waaah, theres screaming in this metal! b**ches. if you'd learn to love the scream, you could appreciate how great this guy is with vocals in all actuality. its not that harsh gross sounding s**t at all. he doesn't only scream, he can sing pretty well. and even his screaming has range, where as most normal metal screamers are a monotone the entire time.
@Douglas, if you don't like screaming you're not really a metal fan.
@Willow, I think you forgot to mention something... . M e t a l Fans: Sick of good metal? Bored with the same old supremely talented musicianship and musical complexity? Are you basically retarded? Are you 16 years old or younger? Tired of getting laid on a regular basis? www.g o d s m a c k.c o m ....w e can help! |
Ever since I listened to Disarmonia Mundi, Soilwork only sounds average to me. Soilwork has its moments but in the end I don't find myself coming back and listening to them over and over again.
I wish I could appreciate screaming. Being a metal fan, not liking screaming limits my horizons.
Nevermind he was/is in Soilwork, Disarmonia Mundi, and Coldseed none "side projects"
Vash the stampede you are an idiot, listen to soilworks older stuff, f*ckin bad*ss b*tch face
Is Disarmonia Mundi just a side band for the lead singer of soilwork or was he in both bands but at different times?
Not good. Sweden generally prduces good stuff, but these guys are not it.
these guys are good, if they work at it they might be able to amount to the greatness of green day. they're almost there
I love melodeath type screams like Bodom and In Flames, but I really don't care for cookiemonste r growls. I really coulnd't explain why I like it, seeing as I love operatic vocals also, like Bruce Dickonson and powermetal. Both styles convey a sense of power, and emotion which is very metal, and it strikes the heart of me.
Hey Dr. Maxhammer, why do people like Nascar? Why do people like beer? Why do people like wrestling? Everyone has different interests and feelings toward things. I happen to love a lot of the guitar parts that accompany the screaming vocals and I totally agree with mwein95.
I agree with mwein95. It really depends on what you like for sure. For me, I usually listen to bands that scream if I enjoy the instrumentat i o n behind it. (However, the screaming has to be tolerable. Some of it I just can't stand.)
Really it depends on what kind of screaming you like...for instance I love bands like Atreyu and Soilwork and In Flames. However if I listen to a band like Amon Amarth, Nile, or Children of Bodom I sometimes find myself screaming in agony...it depends on what you enjoy listening to.
To the person below me:
It's an acquired taste. I used to hate growled/scre a m e d vocals for the longest time. I wanted to like them. For me, it took a combination of listening to a little Devin Townsend (kind of the missing link between screaming and singing) and being really angry so that I could kind of relate to why the vocalist was screaming, I guess. |
Can somebody explain to me the musical appeal of growling- screaming vocals?? I'd really like to know.
