Soulfly
Biography
Upon his exit from Sepultura in late 1996, singer/guitarist/songwriter Max Cavalera almost automatically set out to form his next musical endeavor, the ultra-heavy Soulfly. Besides leaving one of the most popular heavy metal bands in the world, which he co-founded in the early '80s, he also had to deal with the unsolved murder of Dana Wells, his stepson and best friend. Using music as therapy to overcome his depression, Cavalera put together a band that included Roy "Rata" Mayorga on drums (ex-Thorn) and Jackson Bandeira on second guitar (ex-Chico Science), while former Sepultura roadie Marcello D. Rapp rounded out the quartet on bass. Their self-titled debut album was released in the spring of 1998. Besides fronting Soulfly, Cavalera has branched out into other areas usually not associated with heavy metal musicians. He became a much sought-after speaker at music conventions, as evidenced by his appearances at CMJ's New Music Marathon in New York and Holland's Crossing Boarder Festival, both in late 1997. He also guested on Deftones' breakthrough album, Around the Fur, and signed on to sing a TV commercial for Sprite in his native land of Brazil.
Soulfly's second album, Primitive, was released in the fall of 2000. The album was met with a split reaction, and Cavalera found himself the object of criticism from factions of his fan base. The heavy amount of guest appearances and preference toward nu-metal lyrics were the main complaints, but Cavalera maintained pride in his work and kept going, hitting the road and touring behind the album. He handled the production for 2002's III, and Soulfly returned again in 2004 with Prophecy. A year later, Roadrunner reissued their self-titled first album as part of the label's 25th anniversary celebration. Soulfly's fifth album, Dark Ages, appeared in October 2005. Continuing his habit of switching up the lineup, Cavalera was backed this time out by bassist Bobby Burns, guitarist Marc Rizzo (ex-Ill NiƱo), and drummer Joel Nunez, who had previously played on Primitive. In 2007 Cavalera began collaborating with brother and former Sepultura drummer Igor on a project called Cavalera Conspiracy. The duo made its live debut that August as the opening act for Soulfly, and went on to release an album, Inflikted, for Roadrunner in 2008. Soulfly's sixth full-length offering, Conquer, arrived in July 2008. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

I have 3 of Soulfly's albums, but Sepultura blows Soulfly out of the water with or without Max. Why doesn't he get a clue and just go back? I think a 2 singer Max/Derrick Sepultura would be just sick! At least there is the Cavalera Conspiracy, that is a start and it kicks a** from what I have heard.

The Baron Von Shouse are u familiar with Cavalera Conspiracy? The brothers' are back together!
in this case it's easy too like all of the CAVELERA projects, and Rizzo is amazing.

I cant say I like any Soulfly BETTER than Sepultura... . g o d I wish they would get back together.
What a shame. Will always love Max though.....h o w can you not? |
I like a lot of the Soulfly material better than Sepultura... go figure.

LOVE MAX. He is and always will be a METAL GOD. Like Ozzy, Dimebag, Hetfield, he is truly a saviour and warrior son of HEAVY METAL.....BU T . . . . . . I dont think Soulfly is nearly as good as SEPULTURA. I just dont feel that he has the same chemistry and power as he did in Sep.
Aris, Choas AD, Roots....... w a y better than any Soulfly ablum, any of them. Dont get me wrong, Soulfly comes to town IM there throwin down in the pit, but...I still wish that he had not left Sepultura, - Unreached potential. |

so, wait, Max's teenage son died in a car accident (according to the Sepultura bio), and his teenage stepson died in an unsolved murder (according to this bio)?

dhdrum2- You're either proud to be the last "conservativ e " republican, or you're a simpleton for admitting it. But then again, no one here really cares.
I just wanted to say that in the song "Prejudice," the backing vocalist sounds like the Cookie Monster when he says, "We don't want no trouble." Don't believe me? Listen to it again. I guarantee you'll hear it now hahaha :) |
whatever-but soulfly and that other band is produced by men not whiny indie boys
Conservative Republican and loving Soulfly! Patriotic love and "Don't f&%@ with us attitude". Bring it on again! Soulfly has a niche in a gangre of their own. FFLAG
Soulfly is one of the few music artist that doesn't take a defining stance on politics. I am a conservative republican that has always had an affinity for his savage style and anti-puss lyrics. He is very respectful when it comes to those of us still patriotic and love the USA. I can wave the flag and still bang to his music! Conqouer is gonna ROCK!
soulflys god...ur a bunch of homos...go and eat some of your easter eggs your mom boiled for you!

Bull crap. Soufly is a head w/o a body. Cavalera Conspiracy is Soulfly with lime and ice. Nothing new. Devildriver and Chimaira kick Max's a**!!!
SOULFLY'S THE SH!T!!! Anybody who love's Soulfly, will fall in love cavalera conspiracy. The album should be out soon, so keep an eye out.
While not better than classic Sepultura, Soulfly is still better than the current incarnation of Sepultura (which I like as well). Jump Da F**k Up!
the blend of genres is awesome. It sounds tribal, yet very heavy. Awesome
Max Cavalera & Marc Rizzo can rock it as hard as anyone out there.
I especially like the originality of Soulflys' music. Very C00L! |
