Stephen Marley
Biography
Bob Marley's second son, Stephen Marley, first appeared on record in 1979, when he was only six years old. With his brother Ziggy, the young Stephen recorded the single "Children Playing in the Streets," a charity single with the profits going to the United Nations to aid its efforts during the International Year of the Child. The single would also mark the beginnings of the Ziggy-fronted Melody Makers, a band that included Stephen's other siblings. Stephen played a supportive role in the Melody Makers from the beginning as guitarist, singer, and occasional songwriter. To satisfy his creative interests outside the group, Stephen decided to become familiar with the music industry from behind the scenes. Production work began in 1996 with Stephen contributing ideas to albums by his brothers Damian and Julian. Remixing the Fugees the same year was the first public display of Stephen's love of hip-hop and R&B. Work with Eve, Krayzie Bone, and Erykah Badu would follow along with a new role as "executive producer" of the Bob Marley remix compilation Chant Down Babylon, released in 1999. The album drew criticism from reggae purists who thought Stephen's mixing of hip-hop and his father's music was blasphemy, but the album's success encouraged the young producer.
In 2001, his production work for brother Damian's Halfway Tree helped win the Grammy for Best Reggae Album, while Stephen's version of "Master Blaster" landed on the Stevie Wonder tribute Conception the same year. Work began on a debut solo album, but the 2002 formation of production house/promotion firm Ghetto Youths International with brother Ziggy kept Stephen from finishing it. Work on brother Damian's successful 2005 album Welcome to Jamrock pushed his debut all the way back to 2007. It was March that year when Mind Control finally landed. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

Stephen is awesome. He has a different kind of style of music than his father...sti l l kind of reggae, but there's almost some hiphop/rap in it!

much respect to all of the marley family they truely are amazing people their music has changed my life for the better keep on going
Most def more organic and at times less .... 'refined' and 'overproduce d ' as the better known Ziggy. When on mp3 shuffle, my ear prefers Steven to the rest of the Marley spawn.
Stepehen Marley's last CD touched my soul deeply as if he was inside in my head.

Now is Stephen's time to shine! He is extremely talented and grosly over looked, (having always been in the back ground). Will be purchasing his debut effort. I see a very successful solo career for that "brudda".
this is such a good song, the lyrics are really thought-prov o k i n g and address something we have all experienced. Perhaps we left somebody we really loved for similar reasons and this was our explanation, or someone left us and they expressed these sentiments.

Stephen Marley Live is fantastic! The energy and the sound are just amazing! The torch has been passed to Stephen and he carries it well. The future is bright with Stephen and he will be a musical force in the decades to come.
Considering that he works on the other Marley Albums I am in absolute awe of this guys production talents. These marleys prove that music is a part of us and things like melody and poetic talents , timing is embeded in our genes. Music is a language we all can speak.
serious music comes from the line of the Honorable Robert Nesta Marley. The whole family seems to be gifted.
I'm thankful to Allah for the contribution s of this family in the world. |
Its amazing Bob actually passed on true talent to his seeds, most artist were not able to do that, he has so many sons makin music, and good music Damian and Stephen have proved they can do a variety, Reggae roots and Dancehall, get down dredbaby
I love all the MARLEYS. I and I listen to them constantly. They are the true SHOTTAS in the music world..... I hope they continue their father's legacy. They are truly doing him and reggae justice.
I fell in love the first chant from his sweet lips. He has continued the Marley Legacy as well as his siblings. But, Stephen certainly spits some new flava to music that already holds its own.
Bob would indeed be a proud papa. Stephen sounds most like his old man. I dig.
To me Stephen's voice is a tribute to his father's. Indeed all of the Marleys have great voices and music, but Stephen's
tone hits a chord that is, to me, most like Bob. I too, am suprised that Mind Control is his first album. I look forward to hearing more! |
He's good! But why I am I surprised? He's a Marley! I can't believe this is first album!
I love all the Marley music, sons and daughters. But stephen captures his father's sound the best. It's almost freaky how much he sounds like him.
Saw him open for Van Halen this year. Wasn't so sure about him as an opening act, but he changed my mind by the second song.
Stephen defanitly deserved the Grammy. Amazing producer and artist. Nobody else can mix reggae and hip hop music together so well. The way he dose it, dosen't sound as souless as most dancehall. He mixs those styles with out losing the Roots feel of reggae.
congrat's to stephen for winning the best reggae album grammy for Mind Control.
