Steve Perry
Biography
If only one singer could be selected as the most identifiable with '80s arena rock, it would have to be Journey's Steve Perry. Born Stephen Ray Perry in Hanford, CA, on January 22, 1949 (to Portuguese parents), Perry was raised in another California town, Lemoore, during which time he worked at his stepfather's turkey ranch. But by the age of 18, Perry wanted to try and fulfill his rock & roll dreams, so he relocated to Los Angeles. The singer paid the bills by lending his vocals to radio and TV advertisements, as well as working as an engineer at Crystal Studios. In addition to singing, Perry was also a drummer and involved in several different bands during the '60s/'70s, including such obscure local acts as the Nocturns, Dollar Bills, Sullies, Ice, Pieces, and Alien Project, the latter of which was on the verge of signing a recording contract when the group's bassist died in a car accident, promptly leading to the group's breakup.
Dejected, Perry gave up on music completely and returned back to Lemoore to work once more at his stepfather's turkey ranch. But at his mother's insistence, Perry decided to give music another try. Just as he came to the realization, the manager of the prog rock/fusion act Journey, Herbie Herbert, contacted Perry to see if he'd like to try out for the lead singer spot in the group. Perry was eventually welcomed into the band and Journey's sound shifted away from their early indulgent style and toward a more focused mainstream rock sound. The move paid off; over the course of several albums in the late '70s (1978's Infinity, 1979's Evolution, and 1980's Departure), the Perry led version of Journey became one of the top U.S. arena rock bands. Founding keyboardist Gregg Rolie was replaced by former Babys member Jonathan Cain shortly thereafter, which would result in Perry finding a perfect songwriting partner. Just when it appeared as though Journey couldn't get any more popular, Journey scored two of the early '80s biggest rock records back to back -- 1981's Escape and 1983's Frontiers -- which confirmed what fans had known for several years: that the group members were the undisputed kings of arena rock (as the two albums spawned such massive hit singles as "Don't Stop Believin'," "Who's Crying Now," "Open Arms," "Separate Ways," and "Faithfully").
While Journey was on a brief break from touring and recording around this time, Perry issued his very first solo album in 1984, Street Talk, which unsurprisingly sounded almost identical to Journey and spawned a sizeable hit single with "Oh Sherrie" (as well as another minor hit, "Foolish Heart"). Journey regrouped in 1986 for Raised on Radio and although the album was another sizeable hit, it was noticeably not up to snuff when compared to their previous stellar releases. Sensing this themselves, Journey quietly broke up shortly thereafter. Little was heard from Perry subsequently, as a sophomore solo effort slated for release in 1988, Against the Wall, was ultimately shelved. Journey remained out of commission for several years while a pair of compilations, 1988's Greatest Hits and 1992's boxset Time 3, proved to be steady sellers. Perry finally got around to issuing a second solo album, For the Love of Strange Medicine, exactly ten years after his solo debut.
1996 saw Journey regroup for a new studio recording, Trial by Fire, and a proposed tour. But shortly before the tour was to get underway, Perry discovered that he had a degenerative hip condition, which effectively squashed all plans for a reunion tour (Perry's unwillingness to get corrective surgery right away ultimately led to his ousting from the group, as Journey would soldier on with Perry clone Steve Augeri behind the mic). Perry contributed a pair of tracks to the soundtrack for the 1998 Disney animated film Quest for Camelot before a Perry compilation, Greatest Hits + Five Unreleased, was issued later the same year. Perry was interviewed in the early 21st century for an episode of VH1's Behind the Music that focused on Journey, during which the singer told his side of the story of his ousting from the group and the happenings behind the scenes. In addition to his work with Journey and as a solo artist, Perry has lent his vocal talents to recordings by such other artists as Sammy Hagar, Jan Hammer, and Kenny Loggins. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

My response was to all the acolades about how Journey was Steve Perry, I have been a fan of Journey's since their inception and have done the reschearch as to why they are no longer together with (Steve Perry). Guess what it was because of him, true his voice will forever be recognized as a member of the group Journey, but does not apparently mean they cannot go on without him. Also my comment about him being non existant in the music industry was to the fact that he is no longer active.

Journey's new lead singer is pretty good and have allowed Journey as a group to kind of capture their sound once again. Good for them...I don't think that they're as good as they were when Steve Perry was singing lead, but I guess it will have to be good enough, because there IS only one Steve Perry...

Geeez Bernardine.. . G r i p e much? True there are a lot of talented people all over BUT Steve Perry has something extra extraordinar y , more than just talent, it's indescribabl e . We are fans, of course we are going to say nothing but good things about him. We don't go on Kate Walsh's or the Dixie Chicks page and say "get real people" Just because we are not fans of theirs. I could care less who u like or why u like them. Ur a fan of whoever thats great! We are Steve Perry fans!!!

Gifted people are a dime a dozen and vocalist are no different, Journey's effort to capitlize on a sound that worked for them in the 70's and 80's was attributed far to much to Mr. Perry vocals. This group was a rocking smashing hit because of all of the members as a unit, if this were not the case the why is Steve Perry not still profiting on his persay explosive talent get real people Steve Perry became a drama queen in the end and is where he should be, non existent in the misic industry..

Steve Perry is Journey. The remaining members should have formed a new group and stop trying to duplicate Steve's voice. There will never be another voice like his. It is beautiful, special, rare, and my favorite.

Steve Perry is my all time favorite vocalist. I have never heard anyone that even compares to him. Ever since i was a kid I remember listening to Journey and even till this day I love hearing them come across the radio and through my speakers. Truly one of the greatest bands ever with one of the top 3 lead singers ever!
Journey will never be the same without Steve Perry. He is greatly missed but with his time with Journey I will always listen to the older stuff. I hope that whatever your doing Steve that your doing well. THANKS for the great music and lots of luck. They may have found someone that sounds (from what they think) like you, BUT to me there is no comparison. Your voice will always continue to come out of my speakers.

What else is there to say?Everyone agrees he's the greatest!
Steve Perry is THE one & only.He is the ultimate artist.I miss him but I also respect his decision to stay away & for not being w/Journey.I' v e to respect the fact that he left behind a legacy everyone's still talkin about to this day.If ever he comes back,I guess he'll show a more mature side to his musical greatness. Is n t it cheezy if a 60-yr old rocker makes a comeback & is still head-bangin? I think Steve's beyond that now.Go,Steve ! |
Yes his voices is just crazy awesome! Wonder if it still is, would love to hear it!
Steve P. rocks! I wish the people writing these band histories would do a little research instead of just grabbing tidbits here and there and then cobbling them together.
When you say rock ballad you think steve perry. His voice is great. He made journey be so much more than another rock band
OMG...what too say....I LOVE THIS MAN!!! Faithfully listen to him daily. You want to hear one awesome song listen to Missing you..I mean really LISTEN. His voice will forever and always give me chills. LOVE AND MISS YOU STEVE!!
Miss the voice, the dreams and memories that come back every time I hear his voice. Steve was the identity for a generation of teens, though he was never given the credit. The intelligenci a would never acknowledge that Journey through Perry's voice was the most dominant in the business. It never mattered how many arena's filled, tickets bought, albums( now thats an old school word, kids)T-shirt s we bought, the critics never got it and never will.
