Stone Temple Pilots
Biography
Stone Temple Pilots were able to make alternative rock into stadium rock; naturally, they became the most critically despised band of their era. Accused by many critics of being nothing more than rip-off artists, pilfering from Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, the band nevertheless became major stars in 1993. And the influences of those bands are apparent in their music, but Stone Temple Pilots do manage to change things around a bit. STP are more concerned with tight song structure and riffs than punk rage. Their closest antecedents are not the Sex Pistols or Hüsker Dü; instead the band resembles arena rock acts from the '70s -- it's popular hard rock that sounds good on the radio and in concert. No matter what the critics might say, Stone Temple Pilots have undeniably catchy riffs and production; there's a reason why over three million people bought their debut album, Core, and why their second album, Purple, shot to number one when it was released.
Following the success of Purple and its accompanying tour, the band took some time off, during which the group's lead singer, Scott Weiland, developed a heroin addiction. In the spring of 1995, he was arrested for possession of heroin and cocaine, and was sentenced to a rehabilitation program. Following his completion of the program, Stone Temple Pilots recorded their third album. Released in the spring of 1996, Tiny Music...Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop, entered the charts at number four. Shortly after its release, Stone Temple Pilots announced that Weiland had relapsed and entered a drug rehabilitation facility, thereby canceling the group's plans for a summer tour. Weiland's drug problems and the group's inability to support Tiny Music with a tour meant that the album couldn't replicate the success of its predecessors -- by the end of the summer, it had fallen out the Top 50 and had stalled at platinum, which was considerably less than what the group's two previous albums achieved.
Still battling his personal demons, Weiland recorded a 1998 solo album, 12 Bar Blues, while the remaining members of STP recruited vocalist Dave Coutts to record a self-titled LP under the name Talk Show. To the surprise of many onlookers, Stone Temple Pilots then reunited, although shortly after completing 1999's No. 4 Weiland was sentenced to a year in a Los Angeles county jail for violating his probation stemming from an earlier conviction for heroin possession. A newly rejuvenated Stone Temple Pilots and a sober Weiland emerged stronger than ever during the new millennium. The band got back to basics on Shangri-La Dee Da, released in summer 2001. Two years later, STP issued the ambitious greatest-hits package Thank You. The audio-only edition featured 15 tracks -- 13 hits spanning the group's entire career, an acoustic version of "Plush" dating from 1992, and the new track "All in the Suit That You Wear." Thank You also appeared in a CD/DVD format that included three hours of videos, live performances, and behind-the-scenes footage. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Alice in Chains are kinda comming back with William DuVall. And most people don't realize that Jerry sings alot of the songs anyway. And Pearl Jam shouldn't still be around, They're the worst band ever( well, maybe Van Halen). Why does that dooshbag eddie vedder sound like hes had an upper viral infection for 20 years?
-STP live earlier this year kicked a**, they came on late but still tore the roof off |

i've never heard a pearl jam or a.i.c. influence in their music. one thing is for sure, s.t.p. is still around and pearl jam is still around. i wish a.i.c. was still around (staley r.i.p.) i love them all! there are so many vivid memories (and some hazey ones) that come back to me from high school when i hear these guys...

STP is one of my favorite bands to come out of the '90s!! They're a million times better than Pearl Jam.
Why do you waste your time if you don't like them. Take your opinions elsewhere. STP ROCKS!!
If you dont like stp then just F@#$ off. NO need to write bs! Go start a f@#@ band of your own and make your own music pricks
Listen in no way am I here to proclaim STP the best band ever or anything like that but to read the comments is really puzzling to me, I mean, if you've seen them live you'd know what I'm talking about. I caught them may 31st at the infamous scott wieland not commng out after 10 show. And still after all that, people were booing but all as forgotten once Creep started. And they STILL rocked it til after midnight. But as for Wielands drug issues, he's definatly next to go, thats all im saying

STP wrote great catchy songs that were accessible to anyone who enjoyed music, like they do. Sometimes music is just music and sometimes a band is just great. While we enjoy their performances , we can't help but think that the songwriting was of a high caliber and could sound great as performed in other styles by other artists. This band did not stress poetry over musicality. Additionally , they continued to experiment with new sounds and song structures as they progressed.

hasnt their GAY lead singer whatever his name is, i cant remember, but hasnt he died of heroine OD yet? if not goddamn i wish he would hurry and do it!

Wow - benpupin sure has a lot of emotion over a band they don't seem to care about. Rage Against The Pandora?
I think that STP can not and WILL NOT ever be the bands that Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam were/are. Try as they might......t h e y still suck. Oh and Scott Weiland looks like a f*g, along with the rest of the band too.
I've seen two shows on the reunion tour, and I think it is safe to say that they still got it. Can't wait for a new album!

LOVE THESE FREAKIN GUYS. I had the inestimable honor of seeing them at The Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas in June; front row, right up against the security rail and it was AMAZING, easily the best show I've ever seen. I'd see these guys again in a heartbeat (if I could afford another couple of hundred bucks for tickets!) Worth every penny though!

Thank you atbarker&Jen n . I was just pokin fun. these guys are all over my Alice In Chains radio, and I'm not mad about it. Great band. I also enjoy Velvet Revolver.

Purple takes me back to the summer of 94...in Germany, at the beach...look i n ' at all the pretty girls without clothes and trying not to make it obvious I was ogling...THE ARMY ROCKED BACK THEN BOYS AND GIRLS! I'd show up for formations, empty the oil pans on my 577 in the motor pool, then head out to the quarry on my bike w/my CD player and swimming trunks on under my BDU's...met many a nice girl. German guys though...but t h o l e s , every one (to include me).
Love these guys...I could barely stand most of the early grunge stuff when it first came out (although it did eventually grow on me), but I always liked STP. Helped us old people bridge the gap between hair metal and alt metal.
LOL @ Nirvana-in-c h a i n s ! |
Loved the Nirvana in Chains!!! Rat682
their a good band man but damn they stole a lot for those two bands - especially AIC!! |
