Sunn O)))
Biography
The self-described "power ambient" duo Sunn 0))) (pronounced "Sun") were formed in the mid-'90s by guitarists Stephen O'Malley (Khanate, Burning Witch) and Greg Anderson (Goatsnake, Thorr's Hammer). Known for its drone-heavy blend of black metal, dark ambient, and low-tuned noise rock, the band took inspiration from the early works of the Melvins and Earth, the latter of whom inspired some of the group's song titles -- Sunn 0))) began as an Earth tribute band in Los Angeles and originally played music under the related name of Mars. Sunn 0)))'s basic approach (droning guitars, feedback, distorted bass, and other sound effects) was laid down on their first two releases, The Grimmrobe Demos (recorded in 1998 but not released until 2000) and 00 Void (recorded and released in 2000), both of which were the first two releases on the Hydra Head Records subsidiary Double H Noise Industries.
In 1998 O'Malley and Anderson founded the experimental doom metal label Southern Lord, which would go on to release albums by Sunn 0))), Earth, Goatsnake, and Khanate, as well as offerings from up-and-coming black metal acts like Wolves in the Throne Room and Striborg. Sunn 0)))'s third album (and first for Southern Lord), Flight of the Behemoth, arrived in 2002 and found the group incorporating a bit of percussion (and even a smattering of vocals) into the mix, a creative path they continued to take on 2003's White1 and 2004's White2. Black One arrived one year later, sporting a sound that recalled the band's early work shot through with a heavy dose of electronics, while 2006's Altar found the duo collaborating with Japanese doom outfit Boris. The live double album Dømkirke followed in 2008, and the expansive Monoliths and Dimensions (which featured, among other things, a Viennese woman's choir and French horns) appeared in 2009. ~ William York & James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide

case in point, sunn o))))))))))) played in frisco and used an hour and a half of feedback with very few chords, atill a cashir came out and shrieked for an hour and the college students stared as if they loved it. i don't believe they did.sorry.i' m not stupid. i loved it because i'm mentally ill...

i agree with you oldest man in winter-chanc e s are i'm not going to like popular bands but i loved the beach boys and still do.jimi hendrix was very popular.i'm just telling the truth punks are phonies and hate anything commercial because we think we are underground and we are not.were not as different as we think as we are.
just had my first listen, it was a very slow song and reminded me of the melvins, i like them though. it kinda makes alot of other music seem weak. even bands that i really like.
Creed is a band that I despise as well. Here I can't determine if it is radio induced or they just suck.
Now let's look at Bush. I hate them too. On this one, I liked them right away. Even bought a couple albums. Then they soured on me and now they are on my "turn the channel NOW list". I believe their popularity ruined them for me. Clutch is another band that could fall into this category for me.

metalmidget, your assessment is the moral one, the high ground. A band should not be despised because of their success. The reality is I think success can alter my perceptions. Let's take Staind for example. I HATE Staind. My bro kept trying to trick me into saying I like one of their songs by asking my what I think while one was playing. I invariably gave a negative response. In this case I feel my hate of Staind is because they suck, and people are stupid to like them (my opinion here).
First, thank you metalmidget for introducing yet another whole new genre of music to me. Pandora has expanded my horizons beyond my wildest expectations . I will have to give this band more time to sink in, but it has potential.
2nd, I understand angel of anarchy's thoughts. I've often pondered this chicken and egg scenario. Why do I hate a band? Is it because the suck and everybody else happens to like them? Or is it because everybody likes them and that alters my perceptions of them? |
yeah they just pLayed my town (st. Louis) and
my bones are stiLL reverberatin g . . . s - o - o - o - o - 0 heavy. i was hypnotiZed. beware! they are over 155 decibELs Live! and EagLe twIN who opened is one to watch for. ommmmmmmmmmm m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m m |

I'm not, hating on you, Angel, nor was I on tool's page, all I am saying is that I disagree with your terms for liking a band. And I am entirely envious of the fact that you get to see Sunn O))).
(continued from below) same music, that you would just stop liking them? that seems pretty f**king ridiculous to me.
I'd still like them. That kind of thing doesn't matter to me. you should base you're liking of a band based on how they sound, not because of how many fans they have. Like I said on tool's page, if you hate the way a band sounds, well, what can you do? But you shouldn't say they suck just because they worked hard and earned some appreciation . Are you really saying that if Sunn o))) suddenly earned, say, a couple million fans worldwide, and played the

only those in the know, know and thats us-metalmidg e t and thats all that counts.if everyone liked them, then we wouldn't.tha t s why everyone calls us punks.and now they are coming to my town...
The other day, I let my grandmother hear one of sunn o)))'s songs, and she liked it...
Pandora is missing a bunch of their albums...
Discovered these guys when I got Pandora's Stoner/Doom Station... Took a little getting used to, but I really like them now. Wish they had Domekirk on here. Im curious as to what that one sounds like. |
seen 'em live on their Black One tour and i was hooked!
i bought everything they have released. best drones ever. |
