Theatre Of Tragedy
Biography
Formed out of Norway's famed black metal scene, Theatre of Tragedy combine elements of goth and metal with an added touch of drama thanks in part to the dual vocals of Raymond I. Rohonyi and Liv Kristine Espenaes. With the accompaniment of Frank Claussen (guitars), Tommy Olsson (guitars/programming), Eirik T. Saltroe (bass), Hein Frode Hansen (drums) and Lorentz Aspen (synthesizer), Theatre of Tragedy orchestrates a different performance piece with each song, while the singers bounce dialogues off of each other and even at times portray different characters. With their 1995 self-titled debut on Massacre, Theatre of Tragedy won over Century Media Records, who began licensing their albums for U.S. distribution. Velvet Darkness They Fear appeared in 1996, and the more electronic-flavored follow-up Aegis was released in 1998; both albums helped substantially expand the group's following among both goth and metal audiences. Before Musique was issued in 2000, the band parted ways with both Olsson and Saltroe. ~ Mike DaRonco, All Music Guide

yeah, I miss LC's old sound. I give them credit for the vocalists, they flow better with the music pretty well... some gothic metal bands have only one singer (often female) and they sound too un-unique... at least LC spiced it up more...
but I prefer their older stuff anyway. :/ I don't hear much of Theatre of Tragedy... or I have, but just couldn't recognize it... |
Look up Tacere. They fall in the same arena as Nightwish. I don't believe Pandora has them, but they're worth looking up.
Lacuna Coil has a bit too much alternative metal influence in my opinion. I tend to avoid them these days. |
the only ones I keep my ears open for are Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Nightwish, Epica, and Sirenia. Theatre of Tragedy and Leaves' Eyes sorta of... everything else confuses the hell out of me. it's hard to find music that has everything good: vocals, keys, guitars, and percussion. gothic metal has the vocals and keys nailed. everything else is "bland" as you well put it. Lacuna Coil does that ok, IMO. not too much recently though...
Yeah. Goth metal for the most part is pretty bland. It focuses around the vocals and keys, which allows the guitarists to hide behind the vocalist and play pretty bland generic stuff. I've been hunting for a goth metal band that keeps the riffage entertaining and am yet to find one I truly like.
true... Xandria is one band I tried to listen to... but... no go.
most gothic metal bands sound so like, I can't tell most of them apart... :/ |
@Fangirl: They may well have been, but they pulled off the sound better than a lot of other acts.
Elis is pretty cool if I do say so myself. many people just say their a Nightwish rip-off. I like them anyway even if they were.
Plague's general rule of thumb on genres:
Gothic: very atmospheric, focus on keyboards and vocals over guitars. Black Metal: also atmospheric, but with more focus on chaos and an evil, sinister sound. Pretty much requires shrieking vocals. There's an overwhelming amount of fail in both genres, but when one of them manages to nail it, it's REALLY good. Try Edenbridge and Elis for gothic, and Dimmu Borgir or Limbonic art. |
Thats the idea!! ^^ Anyone can dissect something and label it. It's just not necessary.
@_@ ... ok... thanks for confusing me...
but I can agree that it's hard to know what's "gothic" anymore. but I don't pay too much attention. if something catches my eras, I listen and enjoy it. it's not my philosophy to be overly analytical. |
Well, if you wanna get all analytical about it; old Theatre Of Tragedy is definitely some strain of melodic metal. New Theatre Of Tragedy is definitely more in the vein of rock, but I don't think the band has ever really had any "gothic" quality to it. I have yet to hear a band that is truly gothic. People that use that term loosely usually don't know what gothic means. I'd consider their old stuff to be melodic black metal. Their new stuff is pretty much run-of-the-m i l l rock with female vocals.
there's too many genres within genres it's f'ing nuts. I'd call this gothic metal and leave it at that. I get confused with that stuff anyway. @_@
Not to sound like a jerk or anything, but Liv was waaay better. Still, the new singer is pretty damn decent. And, umm, why is it that I always see kids arguing about genres on comment threads? Just shyaddap and enjoy the music. XD
This is totally not black metal. It's more in the vein of gothic rock. It's missing all of the primary elements of black metal. Try Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, or Immortal for black metal; or try Within Temptation or After Forever for the gothic rock/metal.
Great black metal band . . Norway is full of them, but this one kinda sticks out for me. Must be the use of the soft, female's voice and the rough male's voice . .

There are some strange comments (and user names) here, I mean do some of you live in an altered reality or what? You know you can like a style of music without letting it consume you.
I think you should express yourself in a way that will have a greater effect Willow. You're not changing anybody's mind about this stuff, in fact, I think most of us are laughing at you.
now that the fire can be ignored, back to praising!
TofT is awesome! :) |
Stupid Willow, rears his ugly head again, going blind won't stop your shortage of stupidity..I hope the doctor recommends suicide in your case.
it will be a Theatre of Joy |
beat it, Willow! this band is pretty good (I'm getting into them a bit). just leave the fans alone, you narrow-mined a-hole. XP
my opinion, aegis was their best, after that they began to unravel like an old carpet that's been used by one too many cats as a sharpening post...
Not to be bitchy, but if you're going to leave such a flood of comments, please at least spell things right- it's "emotions", not "emoitens". I know this is nitpicky, but seriously? Please?

I,being an American, am "forbidden" to listen to such music as this, but I don't wish to heed their words of warning. I absolutely adore Theatre of Tragedy! OSHA violation to listen to internet radio?! I'd hate to have your job, Linsey. Deathwalks, Theatre of Tragedy got a new lead singer when Liv Kristine left.Their new singer is actually the singer from The Crest.
Well AOA at least Deathwalks got their chance! 60 hours per week?! Thank the Goddess you get a chance to at least listen to music. My job forget it it's considered an OSHA violation. Though you should maybe try a little bit of sleep :). Works wonders!
