Think Of One
Biography
Perhaps a bit of initial confusion about this group might be permitted, although by the mid-2000s the ensemble's raison d'être appeared to be coming into clearer focus: Think of One would like you to think of one world with all its musical threads coming together in a multicultural celebration of rhythm and song. Think of One pose the question "Why can't we all just get along?" in musical terms, and they are willing to travel the globe to prove that, in fact, we can. If Juggernaut, the Belgian band's first CD released jointly by the N.Y.C.-based Knitting Factory and Belgium-based De Beek labels in 1998, laid any rumors about the ensemble to rest, prime among them would be the thought that Think of One play music similar in any way to that of Thelonious Monk. On Juggernaut, there are no tunes that recall Monk's "Think of One," although practically every other musical style on Earth is crammed into the disc's grooves.
Led by Flemish guitarist/vocalist David Bovée, a member of X-Legged Sally leader Peter Vermeersch's Flat Earth Society big band, Think of One might be expected to bring a heavy dose of European brass band funk à la XLS to Juggernaut, and there are times when the disc does in fact ratchet up the horn riffing -- but Juggernaut is otherwise literally all over the map.
