Tom Rush
Biography
Tom Rush came up in the Boston/Cambridge folk scene of the early '60s, playing folk-blues on a series of albums for Prestige Records, then moved to Elektra, and by the late '60s was interpreting the work of such upcoming writers as Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. By the early '70s, he was mixing his own songs on albums for Columbia. In recent years, Rush has become something of a folk packager, putting together road shows that include some of the newer folk performers. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
Selected Discography

Say "New England" and the likes of Robert Frost and this balladeer come to mind.

"Urge for Goin'" was sort of an unofficial theme song for my senior class at Whitman-Hans o n (Mass) RHS ...wonder why? (BTW check out Dave Whiffen song "Drivin' Wheel" on Tom's eponymous CBS album.)

My favorite Tom Rush song is "Urge For Goin'". I find myself singing it every late Fall.

Listening to Tom Rush brings back memories of Boston, Cambridge, younger days, friends and loved ones woven into my heart.

saw Tom in a Golden Link Folk Singing Society sponsored concert in Penfield, NY recently, and just as the old saw says.....lik e fine wine, he just keeps getting better with age.
A major bonus for me, after being a fan for a very long time, was to discover that Tom to be so friendly and engaging in person. |

Used to see Tom Rush around the Boston/Cambr i d g e area back in the late 60s. First heard Urge For Going on Dick Summers late night radio program on WBZ AM. It was long before the release of his Circle Game album. Was on a tape Tom had sent Dick (sorry no Harry). Noboby had heard of Joni Mitchell yet. There was no electric guitar track on that original tape. Such a perfect song.

Met and heard Tom in Miami in a club called the Lion's Share. It was 1975 or so--never forget it. I've got an album but,as with all those other albums, I never listen to it. This is a way to finally hear songs I miss, people I miss...

Once again, I too had the great experiences at 47, Unicorn, a small basement venues in Boston. Joni Mitchell gave a concert with and unknown James Taylor (I think it was at the Unicorn). As an encore he had to do one of his songs over again; he didn't have any extra material. And I mean unknown! I hitched out to Boston from Longmeadow to see him again. He was in a little coffee house with only three people listening, and he had LONG hair and lots of it! God those were paradise-day s ! Back to Tom

Tom's three or four earliest albums in the 60s and very early 70s were phenomenal. With Jack Elliott, Dave Van Ronk, Eric Von Schmidt, the Farinas, Geoff & Maria Muldaur, and so many others, the 47, the Unicorn, and the small basement venues on Charles Street were my definition of heaven. Man, how I miss those days. It was heady stuff. Bill Staines and Chris Smither grew up in that scene

Another Harvard dropout who went to music (like Pete Seeger), this guy brought back the goods from the South. Mr Jellyroll Baker et cetera, I believe from the first album. He was more of a musician than given credit for. He not only had an incredible sense of guitar technique, but always had tight bands when not playing alone. His dreadnoughts were powerful and distinct. This is the guy who so many others attempted to copy, and failed. In early years, as stated, you can hear the real deal of fol

I saw Tom live many times in the Boston area (Club 47, Unicorn and elsewhere) in the 60's and he was always a favorite -- a splendid interpreter of Joni Mitchell songs and others. Many would give him credit for popularizing Joni's songs before she started performing them herself. Urge for Going was a hit on the rock AM stations around New England and is still as good as ever. I saw Tom recently and he's still a great performer. Funny guy too with a wonderfully wry sense of humor.

Urge for goin is SPLENDID. I would not have heard it if not for Pandora - I got it on an Incredible String Band station. KUDOS!

Rush has albums before the Circle Game. Even if they are out of print, it would be appropriate to list them. Also, the biography is woefully incomplete.
