Tool
Biography
Tool's greatest breakthrough was to introduce dark, vaguely underground metal to the preening pretentiousness of art rock. Or maybe it was introducing the self-absorbed pretension of art rock to the wearing grind of post-thrash metal -- the order really doesn't matter. Though Metallica wrote their multi-sectioned, layered songs as if they were composers, they kept their musical attack ferociously at street level. Tool didn't. They embraced the artsy, faux-bohemian preoccupations of Jane's Addiction while they simultaneously paid musical homage to the dark, relentlessly bleak visions of grindcore, death metal, and thrash. Even with their post-punk influences, they executed their music with the ponderous, anti-song aesthetic of prog rock, alternating between long, detailed instrumental interludes and tuneless, pseudo-meaningful lyrical rants in their songs.
Tool, however, had a knack for conveying the strangled, oppressive angst that the alternative nation of the early '90s claimed as its own. So, the band was able to slip into the definition of alternative rock during the post-Nirvana era, landing a slot on the third Lollapalooza tour in 1993, which helped their first full-length debut album, Undertow, rocket into platinum status. By the time the band delivered their belated follow-up, Ænima, in 1996, alternative rock had lost its grip on the mainstream of America, and their audience had shaped up as essentially metal-oriented, which meant that the group and the record didn't capture as big an audience as their first album, despite debuting at number two on the charts. After a co-headlining slot with Korn on Lollapalooza '97 wrapped up, Tool remained on the road, supporting Ænima until well into the next year.
During their usual extended hiatus between albums, Maynard James Keenan decided to use his downtime productively by forming a side project, dubbed A Perfect Circle. The band's 2000 debut, Mer de Noms, was a surprise hit, while their ensuing tour was a sold-out success as well. With Tool breakup rumors swirling, the band put the speculation to rest by re-entering the recording studio and issuing the stopgap B-sides/DVD set Salival late the same year. Finally, May 2001 saw the release of Tool's third full-length release, Lateralus, which debuted at the number one position on the Billboard album chart and became the band's biggest hit. After the obligatory several-year sabbatical to pursue other projects, the group returned with another chart-topper, 10,000 Days, in 2006. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Greg Prato, All Music Guide

If I had to be stranded on a desert isle with only one musical choice, I would say definitely Tool. Their sound stimulates my imaginative psyche and intensifies my musical appreciation . It has a resonating effect that embraces the depths of my soul.

Whatever "pundit" wrote this review needs to go back to writing ingredient lists for corporate cereal brands. There was a magic to Tool, in their prime especially, that was not conveyed. God and Satan have Aenima on their ipods...

I've heard a lot of amazing vocalists but Maynard James Keenan is without any doubt above them all.
Be sure to check out Puscifer; it's Maynard's latest project. Very funny stuff.

post grindcore indie pseudo-prog deathslice metal? Why don't these turkeys who write about defining music get a girlfriend or something. tool defies definition by square suits. shaka gnar

It seems to me the reviewers/bi o g r a p h e r s have a negative impression of Tool or is this just my imagination?

Maynard has me mystified and mezmorized with all that he does. Danny Carey's drumming is unmatched in mathematical proportions. Justin Chancellor's riffs and style add a holographic depth to Tool's music. Adam Jones, a visionary, paints a picture that brings word, sound, and emotion into vivid abstract imagery and captivates us all... TOOL is by far my favorite band, and sets the standard for quality music at a nearly unreachable hight to even the most advanced musicians. Tool fan 4 Life

I find it interesting that there are no 'similar artists' listings for Tool.

Tool is a great band who make a great song few times per album - but those songs are amazing. If they could compose a whole album together of kick-a** songs it might go down as the best album of all time in the genre.
Tool frees my mind, they are't the best band because everyone has their own opinion of the best, and what's amazing but i do love them.
Is Maynard a douche bag with his self-absorbe d ideological rantings.... . . . s o m e t i m e s
Is Maynard one quarter of an amazing band, that when they are in the zone together put out some great music that can be enjoyed at a superficial or internally deeper one......... a l w a y s Enjoying the music of a great band does not make one a drone compelled to follow the personal rants of a single member. Enjoy the songs and don't sweat the small stuff |

"there used to be people living in this part of the building here, but we systematical l y removed them like you would any kind of termite or roach.."

I never said I didn't like Tool, in fact one of my favorite songs is "Schizm" and their music videos are amazing. I just don't care for Maynard because he thinks he's god and most Tool fans act like he's the end all be all of music. So, I beg of you, all fans of the mighty deity, Maynard the Tool, please forgive my sins for I am a worm and know nothing of music.

Tool is one of the greatest bands with one of the greatest vocalists of all time. I don't know how many bands have pompous lead singers but its plenty and who the f**k cares. As long as the product they turn out is something you enjoy then listen and quit worrying about who idolizes who. It seems like everyones got some musician they think is God and thats just ridiculous.
I think Maynard's side project, Puscifer, illustrates how Tool is so much more than the sum of it's parts ... and much more than just Maynard. I love Tool, but idolizing Maynard is a complete mistake. Don't get me wrong - he (and the rest of the band) is amazing. But not without fault.

Maynard, Maynard, Maynard... Love Tool, been to shows, respect their influence, but Maynard is a pompus pseudo-intel l e c t u a l . Al t h o u g h , the man is good with a thesaurus, I don't think his vocabulary makes him an artist and especially not God-like, as he has been called. I find that there is very little intricacy in his lyricism, and passages that appear ambiguous and "artsy" are self-riteous l y created to serve that purpose alone, with little to no deeper intellectual meaning.

Amen rufuss! And listen to what kokengek and rufuss said, bellidanser. If you dont like Tool then dont listen to it. And if you actually took the time to listen to the lyrics you would find out that Maynards not an "uneducated smuck" he's an artist. Everyones entitled to their own opinion and I respect yours but if its against what other people appreciate keep it to yourself. And I may sound like a hypocrite but what I said had not a damn thing to do with you.
Say what you will about Tool's musical ability and politics, but Maynard and Company turn out a unique and irreplaceabl e sound that trancends conventional music. I have a solution for those that don't like Tool, don't listen and/or comment.
Well, kokengek & Meredith, I'm almost sorry I utilized my right to freedom of speech. I have been to Tool concerts and found Maynard to be an uneducated, schmuck who just wants to spout off his opinion and expects everyone else to agree and treat him like he's God, and whomever doesn't is wrong. So if you think I suck because I don't agree, then what does that say for your own narrow-minde d n e s s ?
