Traveling Wilburys
Biography
Reversing the usual process by which groups break up and give way to solo careers, the Traveling Wilburys are a group made up of solo stars. The group was organized by former Beatle George Harrison, former Electric Light Orchestra leader Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison, thus representing three generations of rock stars. In 1988, the five (who had known each other for years) came together to record a Harrison B-side single and ended up writing and recording an album on which they shared lead vocals. It turned out to be a way to transcend the high expectations made of any of them as individuals, and a delighted public sent the album to number three, with two singles, "Handle With Care" and "End of the Line" hitting the charts. Unfortunately, Orbison died of a heart attack only a few weeks after the album's release.
Two years later, the remaining quartet released a second album, inexplicably titled Vol. 3. Although it didn't match the success of the first Wilburys album, it was another million-selling hit. Throughout the '90s, there were rumors of another Traveling Wilburys record in the works, but no new albums from the group surfaced. Harrison and Lynne did re-team in 1995, when Lynne produced and reworked two John Lennon demos with the Beatles for their Anthology rarities collection. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
Selected Discography
To my understandin g , there was a bootleg recording that surfaced after the first album, titled "Volume 2". They were aware of it's existance and thus chose to name their second album "Volume 3". I've never manage to come across it, so I'm not sure that's true, but that's the story as I've heard it.

@ekyugleman: I started the piece off with Bob Dylan, scroll back a couple of frames.

The Traveling Wilburys was one of the best super bands ever created out of all bands I have ever heard....suc h melodious sound

Traveling Wilburys Volume 1 is simply the best album ever made. Imagine how much fun they must have had making this music...how cool would it have been to hang out with them!
Bob Dylan was one of the Traveling Wilburys. You left him out. Why? Too bad that Roy Orbison died so soon. This would have been one of the very best bands of that era.

Crash-that was most excellent. Thanks for sharing!
Amazing how some things happen, just as an unusual set of unrelated (???) circumstance s . |

@Kaput.3- Just some happy rock and roll history. The happy stuff is not as sensational as the tragic of course, so it doesn't get around as much. Here's a Tom Petty quote from back in the day when the 5 of them were standing around on camera, after someone had remarked on hanging out with your heroes: "Yeah, I get Roy's autograph every day!"

most people dont know about their collaboratio n . its kinda sad. thanks for the great background.

I wrote this on my lunch half hour, so be nice. I'm not a critic, just a fan who enjoys history. Start reading five frames down and work your way back up here.

Epilogue: A great band of friends who just had a party hanging out, writing and playing together. It encompassed the career comebacks of Orbison and Harrison and allowed Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne to play, write and form deep friendships with guys who had been heroes and influences since childhood, and support them in the twilight of their careers.

They go into the studio to record and it starts to become clear to all involved that this has turned into much more than Georges B-side. A huge party of songwriting ensues over the following weeks, followed by recording, an album and tour. Roy Orbison sees the album go platinum before he dies, nice bonus.
Jeff Lynne is at the time producing George Harrison and Roy Orbison. He needs a song for the b-side of one of Georges singles. A long list of concidences ensues: Georges guitar is over at Tom's house, the only available studio is Bob Dylan's house. Long story short, Bob, Tom, Jeff, George and Roy end up at Bob's house and write the song "Handle Me with Care" over lunch.

backing band. The Heartbreaker s say yes with no hesitation. A good time is had by all and deep bonds are formed. Meanwhile, Jeff Lynne (lead singer, guitarist, ELO)produces George Harrison's great comeback album Silver Lining. Petty loves it. Later, Tom pulls up next to Lynne in traffic and hollers thru the window that he has some songs he'd like Jeff to produce.

Ok, since there is no professional y written bio, Pandora has left it to me, Crash, representati v e of the unwashed masses. I will summarize and keep everything brief. At about the time of the Farm Aid concerts, Tom Petty's manager was also managing Bob Dylan. Dylan was getting ready to go out on tour and didn't have a band. His manager knew what huge fans Tom and the Heartbreaker s were, called Petty and asked if he and the band would do the tour opening for Bob then playing Bob's set as his

George and Roy are the best(and John Lennon and Gram Parsons and.....). I miss them all. The good die young.
dpowen: They are not making new records because half the band is now deceased. Roy Orbison died shortly after the release of the last record and Geo Harrison died about five years ago. What country do you live in? Do you get your news on cuniform tablets there?
all things must pass...yet we have George with us with each note and with every song and his guitar can still make us smile and feel good
Why aren't you giving us a background of the band?
I really miss Roy Orbison. Was there ever a smoother, gentle and potent voice ever? I think this venture was either his last or one of his last before passing away. |
That is because all the bio would say is: "Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, George Harrison, and Roy Orbison. Any questions?"
I am really disappointed that you have no bio on the Traveling Wilburys!
Why is there no bio on the Traveling Wilburys? I mean, they're the Traveling Wilburys. Anyways, for those who are curious, the Traveling Wilburys were an early rock supergroup of sorts, consisting of George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan.

Please add "Jeff Lynne" to your Similar Artists for this group, as he was a TW member. Thanks!
Sounds like they were having a real good time recording this stuff.
