Triumph
Biography
Late-'70s/early-'80s prog metallists Triumph endured countless comparisons to Rush throughout their career, and with good reason; they were both quite similar musically and lyrically, comprised of three members each, and hailed from Canada (although it must be said that Rush was the originator, and were much more commercially successful). Formed in Toronto during 1975, the trio consisted of guitarist/singer Rik Emmett, drummer/singer Gil Moore, and bassist/keyboardist Mike Levine, and issued their self-titled debut a year later via the independent Attic label. Although the album was largely ignored, it became a favorite of a radio DJ in San Antonio, TX, which led to a regional following solidified by a tour of the state. The exposure also gave way to a deal with RCA Records, who reissued the debut as well as Triumph's sophomore effort, 1977's Rock & Roll Machine, which spawned the group's first semi-hit single, a cover of Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way." It was also around this time that the group became known for its concerts, which relied heavily on pyrotechnics and an intricate light show (just in case their following couldn't figure this out themselves, the trio penned a track called "Blinding Light Show").
With their stock rising among hard rock fans, Triumph inked a new recording contract with MCA, which led to their most successful period both artistically and commercially. Such resulting albums as 1979's Just a Game and 1980's Progressions of Power inched the group closer to breakthrough success, which was obtained by a pair of back-to-back gold-certified albums: 1981's Allied Forces (often considered the group's best album, which spawned the hit anthem "Fight the Good Fight") and 1982's Never Surrender. Such further albums as 1984's Thunder Seven, 1985's Stages, 1985's The Sport of Kings, and 1987's Surveillance failed to meet the expectations set by their earlier releases, yet the group was able to retain its following. Come 1988, Emmett opted to leave the group to pursue a solo career, but instead of calling it a day, Moore and Levine decided to carry on with a new frontman/guitarist, while an 11-track best-of set, Classics, was issued a year after Emmett's exit.
Their first choice, ex-Thin Lizzy/Whitesnake member John Sykes, was too busy getting his project Blue Murder off the ground at the time, so the gig ultimately went to former Frozen Ghost/Aldo Nova associate Phil X (it was also around this time that the group built their own recording studio in Mississauga, Ontario, called Metalworks). The Phil X-led version of the group only managed to issue a single release however, 1993's Edge of Excess, before Triumph split up for good. In the wake of their breakup, several archival releases popped up in record stores, such as 1995's In the Beginning and 1996's King Biscuit Flower Hour (the latter of which chronicled a 1981 concert), while Rik Emmett continued on with his solo career, issuing albums on a regular basis throughout the '90s. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

The Radio DJ from San Antonio was Joe Anthony from 99.5 KISS FM. He broke A LOT of bands. The man was a musical savant. He knew great music when he heard it. He broke out the Scorpions, Judas Priest, Triumph, Guns-N-Roses , Tesla to name a few. A lot of bands owe a ton of gratitude to Joe. San Antonio is always a favorite city for bands to play.. R.I.P. Joe Anthony, we miss you. Thank you!

I actually thought it was Rush at first just because of the singer's voice, but I agree, their music seems very different otherwise. Never heard of Triumph before but I like them. :)

Only similarities between Rush and Triumph is they're both 3 piece, sing in high registers (in earlier Rush anyway) and both from Canada. Musically they couldn't be farther apart. Emmett is a great guitar player. Not necessarily 'better' than Lifeson. Though Lifeson is a way better writer and so much more interesting as a player. I liked some Triumph tunes at one point but they never evolved. The Triumph rhythm section is what it is. No comparison there.

Great band - Rik is awesome in concert with his multiple abilities and amazing performances . The Band was at it's best with Rik as lead singer - I like Gil Moore but I think his desire to go in some different directions musically just caused friction and the break up. Definaltey not Rush - not that I have any problem with it - Triumph stands on their own just fine. Levine and Moore are not even on the same planet as Lee and Peart as musicians, but I would take Rik in a head to head with Alex.

One of the best bands around, perio d , r i k emmett is a extreme rocker, with the pipes and the strings..
I thought I had heard somewhere that Triuph had a problem with one of their managers ripping them off finacially etc....? Anyone know anything about that?
DLea"s world wide events following dawn birth rites reign star king and now child father creative peace ur will waisted
i dont think rush & triumph sound anything alike, just cause they have 3 guys & that they are both snowbacks doesnt make them alike
Any word on a full-fledged reunion tour? There were some rumors but I have not heard anything.
allied forces kicks a**, bobnascar thanks for reminding me of kim mithchell, go for a soda, what a jamola!
Canadian bands are great..RUSH, Kim Mitchell, Loverboy and then there is a great band called Triumph....T h e y earned their dues....This band is not RUSH by any means....But great Rockers....R i c k Emmett is great
One of my all-time favorite albums. I think that the Rik Emmett songs have aged better than the Moore songs. Still worth a listen - my teenage kids are starting to get into some Triumph, Rush, Ozzy. The older music definately has better musicianship than most of the newer rock. I was never a big fan of the grunge era and the aftermath. Nirvana was highly overrated and many otherbands sound alike - with a few exceptions.

Read Triumph's bio. Comparable to Rush? Not even. Still a GREAT band, though!
i saw them at the palace theatre for five bucks in albany ny they absolutely rocked hard
I also hear they are no longer devil worshipers.. . t h e y cleaned up their act and only eat COOKED chickens now. I can go back to listening to "Thunder Seven" and "Allied Forces" on good conscience. Rik Emmett can sure play a "devil" of a guitar.
Uh oh. |

Hey guys, in case you don't know. Triumph has gotten back together and are playing (original three) in Canada. Check out their website. A good friend of mine is real close to Rik Emmett and they are friends again and playing. No US gigs that I know of. I met Rik about two years ago when he was playing a solo gig in Atlanta ..HE IS GREAT and a fine person.

TRIUMPH AND RUSH ARE FANTASTIC, ONLY THING THEY HAVE AGAINST THEM IS THAT THEY ARE FROM " C A N A D A !!! "...BUT YA CAN'T BE PERFECT....M U S I C IS STILL GREAT EVEN THOUGH CANADIANS ARE REALLY WOOSIES!!!
JIM/Connecti c u t , U . S . A . !!! |
Rush is good, but Rik Emmett's talent is uncomparable , therefore yes, Canada's best!!
They are a great band, but canada's best? They can't compete with RUSH.
wow, triumpm it's been awhile. nice/ can't compare song writing to 'RUSH'not many can!, but they have thier place here.
Saw them in Atlanta...du r i n g the Just A Game tour...maybe 10 people there...the most relaxed show I have ever been to. Rik even came out and talked to us after the show. They were good but not EVEN CLOSE to Rush. Shoot, for song writing or power chords, they couldn't match Moxy, another great Canadian band that never made it big.

Two things: killing, frying, and eating a chicken on stage does not exclude one from being a Christian, in only proves one is human and, as such, a carnivor; AND being Jewish does not exclude one from being a Christian, if anything, it enhances the Christian experience due to their heritage!!! As far as the music, awesome band!!!!!!
There is no mention here of the album "Progression s of Power"... which chronologica l l y happened between '79's Just a Game and 81's Allied Forces.
Let's set the record straight here. Triumph is not a "christian band." One working title for the band before they settled on the name "Triumph" was "Hellfire" Hardly christian. Plus, bassist/keyb o a r d i s t Mike Levine is Jewish! 'Nuff said.
a great underestimat e d group- being close to the canadian border, i was able to hear them on canadian radio through my life, and i think they're better than most of the hard rock groups america has spawned in the 80's- definitely among the best of the hair/spandex rock bands of the late 70's and 80's! thank you triumph!
Not quite the same as Rush... Rush went more the direction of progressive rock, which is the direction Rik Emmett wanted to go; Triumph continued with more arena-rock type songs. I love them both to death... Canadians sure know how to rock!
I don't know...that chicken at the US Festival may have thought differently especially after Rik Emmett threw it on the skillet! But to its credit, it Never Surrender-ed and did Fight the Good Fight before finally getting eaten. Time Goes By, but I will still Say Goodbye: Rest in peace Chicken-Boy!
Horse crap on the devil worship !!! no they were not a "Christian Band" They were in the same league as Rush just didn't make it as popular. they have been around since the early seventy's and if they reunite I would go see them they are another Canadian band that made some "airwaves" over here in the U.S.A. oh and as far as I know they go to church and grew up in Christian homes instead of making false claims look up their website and see for your self!!!
Just caught em in July @ a 5 day festival. My opinion; dont understand why they didnt headline. They were the best sounding band there out of 56 others. Gave me chills. Sooooo impressed by a band that hasn't performed in sooo long. They were spot on!!!!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
