Utada
Biography
She dominates the charts in Japan whenever she releases a single or album, but to call her a J-pop singer ignores Utada's American roots and her desire to break all the rules of the genre. Born January 19, 1983, in New York City to a traditional Japanese-style singer mother and a musician/producer father, Hikaru Utada grew up in the recording studio. Her father's production job bounced her between New York City and Tokyo, with the only constant being naps and homework in the studio. She was bilingual at an early age and soon came to understand both American and Japanese cultures.
She had composed and recorded her first Japanese-language song by the age of 11 and her first album in English by 13. What stood out to the few who heard the album was what an accomplished composer Utada was. A Toshiba-EMI executive approached the singer to see if she could write her pop songs in Japanese. She could, of course, and her Japanese-language debut album, First Love, hit number one on the Japanese charts during its first week of release, breaking the record for first-week sales of a debut album, and has sold nine million copies since its release in 1999.
One Japanese-language platinum-selling album after another followed and the Japanese press took note of Utada's unique style, influenced by the alternative rock from America. Academics kept her away from doing many interviews, and her mystique grew as a result. In 2004 she announced she was moving to the Island-Universal Music Japan label and recording an English-language album. Her single "Exodus 04" became a heartbreaker for her solid fan base when her lyrics were taken as a goodbye to Japan.
The album Exodus was released in Japan on September 8, 2004, and Utada now held the record for largest-ever one-day shipment of an English-language album by doubling Mariah Carey's previous record of 500,000. The album mixed wistful pop and sparkling dance music and featured producer Timbaland and Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore. American J-pop fans were aware of her for years, but Utada got her first mainstream U.S. exposure when the "Devil Inside" single appeared in September 2004 with Rjd2, the Scumfrog, and Richard Vission handling the remixes. Exodus received its American release on Island in October of the same year. In 2007 EMI announced that Utada had set a record for a Japanese recording artist with combined sales of 7.7 million across all formats (CDs, digital downloads, ringtones, etc.). The Japanese language album Heart Station in 2009 with the English album This Is the One following. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

She's amazing. I love how she utilizes American culture and Japanese culture to her advantage. :)

I know I'm repeating what many have already said, but I would love if you guys put her album Ultra Blue on here!

I agree with the oodles of comments below me. Utada's Japanese albums are HOT FIRE. Her English stuff is really good, but there's no doubt that her Japanese stuff is even better, in terms of both lyrics and overall sound.
She's one of my favorite artists of all time. ^____^ |

japanese albums pleeeeeeeeee e e a a a a a a a z z z z e e e e e e e e e .

PLEASE get her japanese albums. The smattering of Ayumi's work here is nice, but expansion into more Japanese-lan g u a g e music would attract a larger portion of the attention of fans who are generally very technology and web-oriented .
Hikki is an incredibly popular and successful artist in Japan with a sales record rivaling that of Ayu, so her work would be an excellent place to expand next. (There's also a good volume of it!) And I agree with many below that Ultra Blue is a fantastic album with |

To repeat multiple comments... Please put her Japanese songs on here. They sound better for sure!

Please get her Japanese albums on here, ffs. Her english language albums are garbage and don't do her justice.
Utada is one of my favorite Japanese artists. Her songs Colors, Sanctuary, Simple and Clean, Apple and Cinnamon, and more are amazing. If you like Utada, then you may want to check out Ayumi Hamasaki and Goto Maki.

AFAIK, Pandora doesn't have any of her Japanese songs because of licensing issues. Same thing with all the other foreign artists.
I hope pandora puts her new album up!
As well as her older stuff, she is such a good artist.:> |
Love her music -- but does anyone know if her last name is really Utada? The word "uta" in Japanese means "song."
They obviously don't have her Japanese singles/albu m s . "Simple and Clean" was on her Japanese single, "Colors". And Sanctuary wasn't put on any single or album of hers. This Is The One was released March 14 in Japan, it will be digitally released on iTunes, etc. on March 24. While the physical is being released May 12 in the states. The album date was pushed back from March 24 to May 12 for more promotion.

Umm...what happened to Utada's best songs? Like "Simple and Clean" and "Sanctuary"? ( I think "Sanctuary" is actually "passion" but I Don't know too much 'bout that...) Pandora, real l y , get some of her better songs, please ! ?
Umm, where's Utada's Japanese music? As in actual Japanese lyrics?
Please?!?!?! ? |
It's very upsetting that Pandora doesn't have any of Utada's Japanese music here. It's also upsetting that they don't have her new English single on here either! Please, get "Come Back to Me"!
Omg there is so much music missing!
and is anyone else pissed they don't have arashi? |
Everyone is complaining about the new albums...but what about the old ones? Distance? Deep River? First Love?? Kudos for having her up here at all, though.
They rely need Color Bottle. And what about Ali Project? Home Made Kazoku, and Ikimono Gakari I wonder if they have Stereo Pony
Geez pandora needs more current Japanese artists/song s >.> They don't even have ULTRA BLUE which was released in North America D:
Where's the rest her music, Pandora? I agree, if they can carry some of Ayumi's stuff, they can get some of Utada's j-music. Though they really should expand Ayu's as well, I'm only getting older stuff of hers.
Heart Station is a great album, get it on here. |
