Whitesnake
Biography
After recording two solo albums, former Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale formed Whitesnake around 1977. In the glut of hard rock and heavy metal bands of the late '70s, their first albums got somewhat lost in the shuffle, although they were fairly popular in Europe and Japan. During 1982, Coverdale took some time off, so he could take care of his sick daughter. When he re-emerged with a new version of Whitesnake in 1984, the band sounded revitalized and energetic. Slide It In may have relied on Led Zeppelin's and Deep Purple's old tricks, but the band had a knack for writing hooks; the record became their first platinum album. Three years later, Whitesnake released an eponymous album (titled 1987 in Europe) that was even better. Portions of the album were blatantly derivative -- "Still of the Night" was a dead ringer for early Zeppelin -- but the group could write powerful, heavy rockers like "Here I Go Again" that were driven as much by melody as riffs, as well as hit power ballads like "Is This Love." Whitesnake was an enormous international success, selling over six million copies in the U.S. alone.
Before they recorded their follow-up, 1989's Slip of the Tongue, Coverdale again assembled a completely new version of the band, featuring guitar virtuoso Steve Vai. Although the record went platinum, it was a considerable disappointment after the across-the-board success of Whitesnake. Coverdale put Whitesnake on hiatus after that album. In 1993, he released a collaboration with former Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page that was surprisingly lackluster. The following year, Whitesnake issued a greatest-hits album in the U.S. and Canada -- focusing solely on material from their final three albums (as well as containing a few unreleased tracks).
In 1997, Coverdale resurrected Whitesnake (guitarist Adrian Vandenberg was the only remaining member of the group's latter-day lineup), issuing Restless Heart the same year. Surprisingly, the album wasn't even issued in the United States. On the ensuing tour, Coverdale and Vandenberg performed an "unplugged" show in Japan that was recorded and issued the following year under the title Starkers in Tokyo. By the late '90s, however, Coverdale once again put Whitesnake on hold, as he concentrated on recording his first solo album in nearly 22 years. Coverdale's Into the Light was issued in September 2000, featuring journeyman guitarist Earl Slick. After a lengthy hiatus that saw the release of countless "greatest-hits" and "live" collections, the band returned in 2008 with the impressive Good to Be Bad. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Greg Prato, All Music Guide

This was the first metal band I ever listened to. They got me started on metal. And elway970, Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth are NOT hair bands. Megadeth really sucks though.

thrash my azz...apples and oranges...u cant compare the two...megade t h , anthrax, and metallica,ne v e r showed anybody anything. they play thrash and whitesnake plays hard rock. i happen to like some of both but,i definately like whitesnake more...so "metal-tye" next time you're lookin for the boss, after askin would you like to super size that,he or she is wearin a cap with a big M on it...

Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax may have had long hair, but to describe them as hairbands is just so wrong! Metal up your a**!
I just caught Whitesnake at local festival, a free show, and David Coverdale can still wail his a** off. |
Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax are hairbands in case you did not know.. And if you think that they were not out doing drugs and drinking then you need a reality check.
Whitesnake is like every other hair band they sold out and they suck. Thrash was way better. All hair bands cared about was smearing more make-up on and doin drugs. Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax showed em' whose boss.

I love WHITESNAKE. I remember when MTV would play videos, not so much reality shows like they do now. Don't get me wrong, I'm a reality show junkie. But I love when the group would tour, they had Adam touring with all those musicians. David would express what a great time he was having. OMG, how BEAUTIFUL, Is this love video was not only w/HANDSOME DAVID but how hot & sweet Tawny looked. I loved her then and still do. Thank you for all the good memories w/your music. You rock and always will.

i was never a huge fan but i think they did make some cool songs, I'm not going to rip on them that seems to be the "cool" thing to do , to deride the "hair metal" genre seems misguided. as if alternative or punk or any other music genre is "cooler" or "deeper". Hair metal was overblown, dumb but fun.
I don't think millions of people bought the albums because of their hair. you know? |

@ronanderika - What does "hes awsome" mean? No capitalizati o n , no punctuation, piss-poor spelling. What's the matter with you? If you want people to take your post seriously, then proof-read your comment before clicking the submit button.
I'm not a teacher, nor the post moderator. I'm an American who loves his language. Go bastardize another language. Listen to less music, and start educating yourself - it will do wonders for your future. I'll get off my soap box now. |

GODSMACK SUCKS!!!.... T h i s band is awesome and they were awesome even before they made it big. Everyone that was in Whitesnake in the begining before the Hair Days were all ex Deep Purple members...Ia n Paice, Jon Lord, Roger Glover. Pandora needs to update them on here and start from the very begining when David was in DP I know they mention it but not enough...aft e r the ex members left then David got Vandenberg, Sarzo to join...Liste n to the early Whitesnake and you will really enjoy them...

Someone refresh my memory about Steve Vai and the "Slip of the Tongue" album, wasn't he brought in temporarily as a "hired gun" to record & tour because Adrian Vandenberg (I think) had some some sort of hand or wrist tendonitis?
power metal was the best in the 80s man i can remember how excited i was when i heard this or tawny come on tv i loved everything about this band coverdale and co still rock on their new release reb beach is even thrown in the mix from winger how cool is that

Hired guns kept them on top of their game. Some of the best musicians of the era came to fame via David's relentless pursuit of perfection. This band Always put out a good product. And that is why we remember them.
And yes, Tawny made the videos even better- another good pick by David. |
I grew up with the 80's music these guys were only one of the groups that made the 80's the best of music ever written and performed without whitesnake the 80's just would'nt have been complete.
adrain vandenburg brutal guitarist..c o v e r d a l e and whitesnake never did anything for me...theres just too many hired guns in the snake history...bu t props for stickin tawny!!!!

To answer elatad's ?, more than likely the band older stuff is out of print, and since this site links up w/ Amazon & iTunes if the albums aren't available on those sites they aren't going to be part of the selected discography.
I just got hooked up with Pandora and have the same question as MAX Velo - the 1987 album is not the start of Whitesnake - I guess that's what they mean by "Selected Discography" - they probably don't make as much money excavating the archives and prefer to throw in new artists for folks who select "Whitesnake" as one of their bands
Where are the early 70's albums?? "Sinners & Saints"... "In The Heart Of The City"... etc?? Pretty lame that Pandora doesn't recognize his early work, which by the way, is when "Here I Go Again" was originally written. When Whitesnake had Jon Lord and Ian Paice of Deep Purple in the group! How can they overlook that??
Oh s**t I forgot about this one... gotta add a few to my power ballads station.
