Within Temptation
Biography
Goth metal stars Within Temptation marry the guitar-driven force of hard rock with the sweep and grandeur of symphonic music, and the results have made them one of the most popular bands ever in the Netherlands. Within Temptation were formed in 1996 by guitarist Robert Westerholt and vocalist Sharon den Adel, who are partners on stage and off. Within Temptation's early material caught the attention of the Dutch label DSFA, and they signed the group to a record deal; their first album, Enter, was released in 1997. Up until this time, Within Temptation had been a studio project, but the success of the album led to invitations to play several live shows, including the Dynamo Music Festival, one of the biggest live music events in the Netherlands. Within Temptation demonstrated their strength as a concert act, and began playing Germany, Austria, Belgium, and the Czech Republic. Booked to play Dynamo's main stage in 1998, Within Temptation felt recording new material was in order, and they released the Dance EP for the occasion. Shortly afterwards, Within Temptation went on hiatus as the group's members dealt with personal commitments and Westerholt and den Adel built a studio for their ambitious recording projects.
In late 2000, Within Temptation returned with their second full-length album (and first for Sony), Mother Earth, and the band continued to appear at major music festivals in Europe and the Netherlands; the album was a major commercial success, and the song "Ice Queen" was released as a single, rising to number two on the Dutch charts. After several years of steady touring (including major festival appearances in France and Mexico), Within Temptation returned to the studio to record their third album, 2004's The Silent Force, an ambitious project featuring a full orchestra and 80-voice choir accompanying the band. It was their first disc to be released simultaneously in Europe and the Netherlands, and became a major commercial success, going platinum at home and reaching the Top Ten in Germany, Belgium, Spain, and Finland. Having become the Netherlands' best-selling international act, Within Temptation finally landed an American record deal with the venerable metal imprint Roadrunner, which released their fourth album, The Heart of Everything, in 2007. Black Symphony, a live CD/DVD recorded at the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam with a full choir and orchestra followed in 2008. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

wait... there are people... more insane on keyboards that Tuomas???
I must hear for myself!!!! O.O |
@LLM: Morpheus from Limbonic Art and Sverd from Ulver, Arcturus, Borknagar, and The Kovenant(ear l y ) both have him beat. Probably the best metal keyboardists I've come across. Tuomas is better than most though.
@Pat Garvey: I disagree. Nightwish has always been very keyboard heavy and always has the driving guitar riffs behind it. WT is softer and more melodic and they don't use keyboards nearly as often or as well as NW. Then again, nobody can match the awesomeness that is Tuomas.
just found out about these guys through my nightwish radio and there really good if you havent heard nightwish andthing before look them up they sound a lot like this band.
Here is a whole new world of music I didn't even know existed. Love it.
the internet is where morons can show their true colors...
Please don't include abbreviation s of chocobos on a line with Godsmack on it. Besides, I didn't think the undead chocobo band Staind can change, so why command it too? Thanks Willow.
WT is one of my bands. my favorite song is "angels". i can really relate to the lyrics. thats what i like about this band, you can relate to them
"Memories" is actually one of those WT songs that I really do enjoy. They seem better at the softer songs than they do at the hard rock approach.
Somewhere is probably my favorite of their soft songs, although Bittersweet puts up a good fight. I think my absolute favorite WT song is Jane Doe - beauty and the beast chorus FTW!!!
One thing I miss about WT is that I wish they would put some growls back into their songs. I know they said they didn't like it, but Enter and The Dance were just so AWESOME! |
it's funny. I actually prefer "Memories" over the other softer songs by WT. I cried through it...
I have to agree with Plague, WT really is a filler for the most part, but there are some songs i really really like, "the howling" and "somewhere" in particular.
P.S. Great name Plague lol. |
I've heard it. It's okay. WT doesn't do much for me, to be honest. It's decent listening, but it's really just filler between songs that make me want charge into battle.
stand my ground-now thats a great song-too bad not enough people actually do it...
@Yoho: I actually got my name from a Mercedes Lackey novel by that name, although it is cool that black swans are mentioned in a song. I'm big on fantasy novels. Thanks for the wb.
@Black Swan: I THOUGHT that was where you took your handle from, I just kept forgetting to ask. Huzzah for being right, ha ha!
Also welcome back - I know all too well the tribulations of computer outages (I had a series of unfortunate events that saw one component after another fail on my PC recently, twas a trying week, heh). |
sounds cool! have fun!
Thanks, 12nights and Fangirl! My internet was down for a while, and then, I've been busy helping my mom plan for her Halloween party. Now, I'm working on a post-Hallowe e n party with my friends that we are calling a Dark Masquerade.
It's a good song. I'm just particularly fond of the redneck intro.
Welcome back, Black Swan! Where have you been, we missed you! I think all the normal users that hang around the metal pages are here again, let's see... Plague, Fangirl, Swan, OMW, Me, LLM, Yoho... did I miss anyone?
Fly With The Black Swan is one of the few tracks I really like on Unia. Great lyrics! |
long time no chat, Black Swan! XD
Hey, the song's about flying with me! lol Have you guys missed me?
I think the problem has been solved now. lol
damn, why must some albums be different in each country (unless it's some lame bootleg)? |
LOL. My 'Unia' album by Sonata Arctica has half of the lyrics to a song that it doesn't have in the tracklist at all, and only the lyrics to the intro of "Fly With The Black Swan".

Just to clear up any confusion, the TRACKLIST of After Forever, the album, goes:
1.Discord 2.Evoke 3.Transitory 4.Energize Me 5.Equally Destructive 6.Withering Time 7.De-Energiz e d 8.(Now, on my version this song is Cry With A Smile. But I guess Matt's version has Lonely as this song.) 9.Envision 10.Who I Am 11.Dreamflig h t 12.Empty Memories Bonus Track:(And on my version this was Lonely, I guess Cry With A Smile was here on Matt's version.) Just to clear up any possible confusion! :) |
Yoho:
Oh, no!!! I meant that my FAVORITE songs off the album go in that order! As in, my favorite is Dreamflight and my least favorite is Empty Memories. I know how the tracklist actually goes. :) Sorry for the confusion! However, on my version, Lonely IS the bonus track. Cry With A Smile is track number 8, after De-Energized . Guess we just have different versions. |
from looking at that track list... that's weird. perhaps you both have different versions of the same album. I remember one album I have by a band I like has a track list one way in one country and different in another. like the order of the original would be like as 12nights had it, while one from another country would be released with the track list like Matt's.
hopefully I made sense... :/ and still, that is kinda weird why that would be! |
12nights: Odd, the album I have has all of those songs except they're in a completely different order (using your track #s mine goes 9-10-8-7-6-2 - 3 - b o n u s track-5-4-1- 1 1 ) , and the additional track is Cry With A Smile, not Lonely. Discord makes a great opener.
Don't know. Maybe he was going for something different with Epica.
My question is: Why is it that Mark Jansen went from being able to play guitar decently (I mean, AF's riffs may not be face melting, but they are at least respectable) to Epica's lackluster riffage?
I bring this up, because I think it's pretty unanimous that Floor is amazing. |
I picked up After Forever (the album) a while ago, before I was sure about the band. I LOVED it! I think the songs go:
1.Dreamfligh t 2.Withering Time 3.De-Energiz e d 4.Who I Am 5.Envision 6.Equally Destructive 7.Energize Me 8.Transitory 9.Discord 10.Cry With A Smile 11.Evoke 12.Empty Memories My version is one that includes the bonus track "Lonely". I love that song too! |
I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and STRENUOUSLY URGE Fangirl (or anyone else who hasn't yet) to listen to After Forever - I picked up the mp3 version of their last album (the self titled After Forever) from Amazon because it was $6, and it is one of the best music purchases I've ever made because Floor is BLOODY AWESOME.
I've long since lost track of how many times I've played that album and it's still not boring me. |
