Xandria
Biography
Female-fronted symphonic/goth metal band Xandria broke into the German music mainstream in 2004 with their second album, Ravenheart. Though many argue that the band isn't genuinely metal, Xandria garnered a sizable following in Germany and a growing following internationally; in particular, the band's flair for exotic themes and Middle Eastern motifs contributed to its appeal, as did its English-language lyrics. Founded in Bielefeld, Germany, in 1997, Xandria are comprised of Lisa Middelhauve (vocals, piano), Marco Heubaum (guitar), Philip Restemeier (guitar), Nils Middelhauve (bass), and Gerit Lamm (drums). The band's recording history began with a self-titled demo in 1997, followed by a second demo, Kill the Sun, in 2000. Subsequently signed to Drakkar Records, a German metal label affiliated with Sony BMG, Xandria made their album debut with Kill the Sun in 2003. Produced by Dirk Riegner and recorded during winter 2002-2003, the album cracked the German Top 100 album chart, reaching number 98. Xandria's second album, Ravenheart (2004), proved their mainstream breakthrough. Produced by José Alvarez-Brill and recorded during winter 2003-2004, the album spawned a Top 100 hit single, "Eversleeping," and sold well enough to reach number 36 on the German album chart. Xandria's third album, India (2005), was also produced by José Alvarez-Brill and charted slightly better than its predecessor, peaking at number 30. Salomé -- The Seventh Veil (2006), Xandria's fourth album, marked a change in direction for the band. Produced by bandmember Marco Heubaum, the album was thematically based loosely upon Salomé, the seductive daughter of Herodias who is mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible in connection with the death of John the Baptist. Salomé was less successful than its two predecessors -- just barely breaking into the Top 50, at number 49, and spawning no charting hits, though a video was filmed for the single "Save My Life" -- and somewhat polarizing because of the band's change in direction. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

Kill The Sun
@freeurmynd: never thought of it like that, but you're right. Xandria's music really is similar to old school metal. Thanks for pointing that out!

This band is what got me started in the symphonic metal genre. She has the 2nd best voice in the genre, right behind Liv, IMO. And for those who say they are not metal.... seriously look up old school metal. The guitars are what drives them into metal.

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins. Never did I wanna be here again, And I don't remember why I came. Candles raise my desire, Why I'm so far away. No more meaning to my life, No more reason to stay. Freezing, feeling, Breathe in, breathe in... I'm coming back again... I'm not the one who's so far away When I feel the snake bite enter my veins. Never did I wanna be here again, And I don't remember why I came. |

that must be another reason why these guys are so bland to me: Xandria has symphonic elements, but it's tied with a softer goth rock sound. nothing wrong with that, but they are still too flimsy for me.
I've heard two songs off of India that were metal, and nothing off of Kill the Sun that was.
I would say that, from what I've heard, India is metal, and Kill The Sun is questionable .

Yeah, but then you get songs like, "Mermaids", and "Kill the Sun", which are less metal even than Edenbridge.

Xandria kind of seem like they incorporate all the symphonic from symphonic metal and little of the metal.
This, I guess, technically makes them not a metal band, but the fact that their symphonic arrangements are in the style of metal makes for some very "epic" songs in the true meaning of the term. Like a rose on the Grave of Love, for instance is not a far stretch from Bach with modern instruments and a singer. Are they Metal? Maybe not, but they're certainly an offshot, and not a very far o |
@LLM: They have a couple of songs that are metal, but for the most part they play stuff that's stylisticall y closer to goth rock. You can really argue it either way with no clear winner, I just happened to pick that side for the sake of controversy.
@Plague: What's the arguement for Xandria not being a metal band?
@Emily: I'd argue that they really do sound pretty much like any other gothic-symph o group in the goth rock genre, in addition to arguing that they're not actually a metal band.
While your 'quoting' makes you look like a complete jackass (just like everything else you do), it's certainly a lot funnier than the garbage posts where you type backwards about Godsmack, extend the word Godsmack to an entire post length, or impersonate other people who are not suffering from sheer determined retardation.
If you can't stop being a horrible troll, you should really stick to misquoting people - the personal touch makes all the difference! But seriously, go the hell away Willow. |

I hate this because they sound different to a lot of other symphonicall y metal bands out there, and that's actually very gay. I like my aunt though. And Willow is a tree that stays in one place. And I actually LOVE Godsmack. |
I like this because they sound different to a lot of other symphonic metal bands out there, and that's actually pretty cool.
And Willow is doing that all over the place. And I actually detest Godsmack. |

I like Xandria because Willow is not a member, and they are not Godsmack.
I like Xandria because they're not as heavy as the other similar artists.

This band needs to incorporate more blacness per say. In fact, they are really lacking in the symphonic qualities of the blackness arts while mimmicking only some of the qualities that my blackness metal band has. The other day, my band produced some sick vocalities that screeeeched to the highest of the black mountains. Xandria has a way to go.
They may not be metal, per se, but they're still good!
I wouldn't call Xandria my favorite example of the genre, but they are certainly enjoyable - thanks Pandora!
I'm giving my ears another chance to listen to these guys.
the music is decent, the singing beautiful, but it's a bit dry for me. maybe the vocals aren't strong enough... |
I'll bet Liberal Willow is a actually completely different person from all the other Willows, and is laughing his a** off that we all believe he's actually the same one.
The End of Every Story is the only Xandria song I really like, although some of the other ones on India are decent too. |
yeah right, Willow.
and by the way, just because someone is light and easy about types of music, that doesn't mean they are a liberal person to the core. |
So you are admitting that this is actually metal Willow?
Anywho, nobody is condemning you for disliking female leads. There are a lot of people who dislike them. There are also a lot of people who dislike clean vocals, and also a lot of people who dislike growls/screa m s . If your comments continue to be as unoffensive as the last one, people may actually start to like you. |
I like only one song... I tried, but. this band is a sad no for me.
wow... all the willows are gone for now... |
Yes, widget, that is what bands tend to do. It's sort of in the job description.
@ Plague: yeah! I almost thought he said "cheerios" or something...
Do u even know what emo is u dumbshit? Obviously not. Go back to your pitiful bitchsmack and beat off silently in the dark u little b**ch.
love her voice. music is kinda simple though, but it still flows nicely together. thumbs up!
ehh, I tried but this band doesn't stick out much for me. srry.
I heard a few rumors as to why Lisa left--one of them was because she was pregnant. But, you know. That's just a rumor.
As for the new band mamber, I believe her name is Kristen? Or Kersten. I'm more sure on this bit than Lisa's pregnancy. |
