The answer is clear to me: we're human dancers...Ye p . As clear as mud. Good luck with THAT Killers! Some try to live as humans- at times we all are dancers too, puppets if you will- in the comedic, tragic play of life. The puppeteer is never visible, but is always present. :D

Dancer means "performer". The song is basically asking the question are we human (meaning are we real and true to ourselves) or are we just "performing" and fake in the way we live our lives. It's very deep actually. Love it!

Thanks for the info wattsobx. I took it one step further and found this linked from an interview with The Killers:
"He says the lyrics were inspired by a disparaging comment made by Hunter S. Thompson about how America was raising a generation of dancers." I think he means 'puppets' in this manner. Even though it sounds silly, there's lots of symbolism in this song, which is why I like it so much. |
