He wrote this song after the passing of his mother. She had a terrible bout with cancer.
This is a reaction to loss. Part of the grieving process is anger. |

I believe in free speech and freedom of religion- it's a major point of my personal beliefs. But that still doesn't justify what I see as running rampant over someone else's beliefs. Normally I like APC, but I cannot like this song.

I came to this page thinking to comment saying "I wonder how many people this song has pissed off".. the comments answered it for me.
I never knew the story behind this song, but now that I do, it makes perfect sense for me. Maybe for the religious people, they see it otherwise, but for maynard who is obviously not a believer in god, It makes sense how he'd have seen this. Hell, I would have too. |

This badn makes me think Maynard is the driving force behind the music he is involved in. Another brilliant master piece.

I'm agnostic - but to each his/her own. Religion seems to do some people good. I don't disrespect. Regarding the song, the lyrics hit home for me: my mom's name is Judith - she's a preacher's daughter. So, I've always liked the lyrics.

watched Zietgiest and you might learn something. Every religion has the exact same story line. because knowledge is POWER! lol

no s**t. my aunt was a nun, devoted her life to this so-called god, and guess what? she got hit with cancer and died. real f**kin nice. i would say im going with maynard on this one, the wtf attitude. f**k it.

i used to believe in god. when i was seven.
now i don't believe in fairy tales. grow up. |
||
and i do have to say tho that obviously he didnt understand what she believed to the full extent, cuz obviously she was way more religious than he was. so i agree with you there. just dont think ignorant is the right word. difference of beliefs/opin i o n s , maybe ... appreciate ur opinion! :)
|
||
maybe nt ignorant but jst didnt agree w/it, as i dnt either.but dnt call it ignrnt.i know what it means, believe me.i had an xtrmly religious grandmother who would nvr doubt "god" for a second.thr was a reason for all the bad s**t that happened to her.like i wrote before its all brainwashing , all mental.some people need that to be able to go from day to day.i think he was saying that logically it just dsnt make sense.hes sayin y th hell does she s

I wasn't making a religious argument at all. I was saying Maynard did not understand what his mother believed. She did not believe that God had stricken her, rather that the existence of man's sin is what enabled sickness and death. So she saw her condition as an opportunity to show that you can acknowledge God even in the face of terrible circumstance s . Maynard accused God of causing and allowing her to be paralyzed. I was just saying he was ignorant of the true meaning of what she believed.

btw, i grew up in a catholic home, and went to church every sunday while living with my parents. i have been baptized and did my first communion in the catholic church. now go take a look at the history of religion and tell me what you think. im just saying dont believe everything you hear. love maynard! he rocks.

||
umm, not every1 is religious.th o ur entitled 2 ur own opinion n i appreciate u expressing it, its not every1s.orga n i z e d religion is all about brainwashing and manipulation . i believe there is a god, or gods (sun, wind, stars, etc.)what i have noticed as an adult is that religion causes alot of hate, n makes some people believe theyre better or entitled 2 more than others just cuz they go2 church or whatever.how s that righteous?th i s song kicks a** whether u believe it2b ignorance or not!

I usually like A Perfect Circle, but not this one. Unfortunatel y it displays an arrogant ignorance that grates on me. It does however illustrate Maynard's conflict over his mother's condition very well. If he knew anything about what his mother believed in he would know that sickness and disability was caused by man's sin, and the very same Jesus that he cursed in this song came to redeem man from this curse of death. His blatant blasphemy betrays his ignorance of things spiritual. *flameshield *

Anything Maynard does is gold whether it be with Tool or any other band like APC. His voice is truly amazing and his lyrics are powerful and mysterious at the same time.

Haha, Sandra has it! Brilliant the way this all unfolds - Its hard to find a good song that actually has meaning now-a-days, but at least A Perfect Circle (and Tool, of course) still have it.
|
||
WOW! THANKS SANDRA.CHRIS T I A N ! ! I HAVE LOVED THIS SONG SINCE THE FIRST TIME THAT I HEARD IT, BUT NEVER REALIZED THE WHOLE MEANING OF THE SONG! MAYNARD ROX AND SO DO YOU!
|
||
wow. some people are inane zombies who thought they knew what good insightful and spirited muic was and then they say things like "maynard can do better" even without the explanantion from sandra, who couldn't feel this confusing and emotional situation the song portrays. wooohoo!
|
||
Maynard can do better? Judith was Maynard's Mom, who was very religious. She had a stroke that left her in a wheelchair partially paralyzed. This only strengthens her belief in God & Maynard found this to be ironic. The lyrics reflect how he felt about the situation. Its not like you killed someone, Its not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side,You praise the one who left you broken down & paralyzed. He's saying his mother was a good person who believed in God and this is howshewastha n k e

I don't like this one because it's so blunt about its message. Maynard can do better than that.

I love that they sound like Tool because of the singer, but they are so different than Tool at the same time
