This was the first classical symphonic work I actually fell in love with. I think as a whole, it didn't make much sense to me at first but as I played it over and over it slowly began to come into focus. The version I heard first is the one I like best; it's by the New York Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein. See if you can find this version and see what you think. It moves along very well.

if anyone wants to know, there actually is a video out there of the original production with Martha Graham dancing in it. I think it was televised during it's first run. The video is in black and white but the music and the dancing are both great if you can find the recording. Check your nearest college's music library.

I think that Martha Graham spoke in her book, "Blood Memory" about dancing to this. I so much love listening to this song and imagining her dancing to it!
