Artis played spoons and other rythm instruments, but I've seen him playing guitar and singing before. He sounded great singing John Lennons' "Working Man's Hero" out on the street one time. I was moved. He had the whole place captivated.

Artis the spoonman, a very talented street musician, was a Portland fixture for many years. You used to see him at Saturday market playing, singing, by himself, with others, always good. In about 1979 I was with my girlfriend shopping at Saturday market and I was playing wooden drum boxes in a stall where they were for sale. This happy hippy guy started jamming along with me and we had a great time for a few minutes. As we were wandering off, my GF said "Wow, that was Artis the spoonman"

The man's name was Artis the Spoonman, not Artimis. I also seriously doubt the song is about heroin either.

I thought Artemis was a Greek goddess. When did Artimis, the spoon man, come into the Soundgarden members' lives (especially Chris's, since he has sole writing credit for the song)?

I used to think this song was about some indian guy that played the spoons.
It was nice being young and innocent. But now I know its about heroin. Still an epic song, and still my favorite on this album. |
