most all of these comments are true about H. stands for heroin, his sons middle name, and half empty/half full. It is about how he was abused and how he is afraid that he will lash out on his own son (who's middle name is H) because of the abuse he sustained. so he used heroin as a coping means. How it makes him feel half emtpy (should have cried, i have died) and half full. heroin is like an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other too btw...

"It's a safe bet that it does NOT stand for Heroin"
I'm glad you wrote the song and can say that with the utmost certainty. Everyone seems to have their own interpretati o n of this song (as with most tool songs). I know Tool believes in lachrymology , study of crying for therapeutic reasons, and that if he cried "should have cried" he would have been able to release his pain rather than temporarily numbing it with H. Thats what I think. Besides that, great song. |

Also... When introducing this song live in 1996, Maynard touched on the idea of having an angel sitting on one shoulder and a devil sitting on the other. In at least one interpretati o n , the song is about being very close to someone who is tearing you apart, someone you can't bring yourself to leave, but someone who will destroy you because you can't leave them. It is the price you pay for being close to them; they aren't doing it on purpose: "considerate l y . "

For you n00bs who can't do some fact checking- here's your answer:
The working / early title for this song was "Half Empty." The H likely stands for that (or "Half Full"). It may represent the old "half-empty is interchangea b l e with half-full" notion. Of course, it could also stand for anything else. It's a safe bet that it does NOT stand for Heroin. |

I've heard rumors it's about the abuse Maynard sustained as a child and his inner struggle not to do the same to his son. Then again, it is Tool...could mean nothing more than good music.

i love this song. i actually got to see them play this live back in 2001, when they would actually play older songs, unlike the 10,000 days tour.

Maynard's son's middle name is H, just H not an initial. It could mean Heroin, but who knows?
