What a song! I never heard too much off of Lateralus except for the singles.
This probably off, but here's my take: As you climb the Fibbonaci Sequence (spiral out), the relationship of consecutive numbers more closely approach Phi, the golden ratio (the perfect balance of body and mind?). Thus, the farther out we spiral our lives, the closer we can come to spiritual and physical oneness. These guys make my brain hurt in a real good way. |

Please turn off the tv and do unto others as you want unto you that is the only way. please do not live life vacariously, get out there make a difference, i am pooor, i dont care, i give my life is worth it, if i have 1$ and you need it its yours, ife isnt money, it is worhtlessnes s , i would rather live on the street than have it all, rember my friends, give and you get, listen to TOOLS messages, it isnt WHO we are it is WHAT we do
the song is perfect and that is the simple truth to a song made beautifly these guys are a cut above the rest
I read it. It's so cool.

Check out the song's Wikipedia page for a more descriptive breakdown of the references to the Fibonacci sequence and spirals, the golden ratio and golden spirals, etc. The fact that Tool layered this song so richly with metaphor, timing, time signature changes, etc. makes me enjoy it even more and better understand "the message." Also... it just rocks!

That sounds interesting; I'll have to check it out.

damn! every time.......i t gives me that same rush. no other song has made a more distinct imprint on my brain.

i agree with definition of epic:
Black then white are all I see in my infancy. Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me. Lets me see. |

"This is one of the finest and most perfect songs ever composed.
It doesn't matter if you disagree. It's not a matter of opinion." I agree. This is truly a musical masterpiece. The music alone speaks for itself in its own language. The words are intellectual l y intriguing. Truly EPIC. |

They are rock genius's! I don't care how long their songs are, or how many times I've heard them. It's like a movie - every time you hear/see it, something new pops out at you. Tool is brilliant! Hopefully they come out with more ear candy soon!

if anyone says a tool song can go too long, is not a fan of their music. there are songs i have listened to that are like 15-20 minutes long, and im thikning... its over already? music for my life.
Amazing.
thats what comes to mind basically always im listening to tool. you can't not think when you listen to them. it's like you have no power over it. atleat i dont. this songs math dude. this song & this whole f**king album kept me thinking for days, & doing research & damn! Crazy f**k. i love it. ;p |

We have no ability to evolve. Evolution happens through replication. The whole human potential through evolution of the soul is a bunch of oxymoron that sounds important, but makes no sense at all.
you apparently have never been to a TOOL concert???? there live versions can go on for days... their concerts are awesome dream sequences that I wish would never end. =)
and an average song length for TOOL songs is about 7-10 minutes. =b Compared to others with songs about 3-5 minutes. I'd prefer them longer, especially when they sound so damn good. And this album was definitely Human Inner-workin g s inspired. Our inner eye that may potentially help us see beyond our mere visible limitatio |
as an add on if you look at the song 46 & 2 it is reffering to how the average human has 46 chromosomes but they are talking about a post human race that will have 48 chromosomes. Basiclly they do wayyy to much LSD and Ketamine.

The spiral refers not only to the fibonnaci sequence, but to the human dna spiral. It is a song about human potential -- as are many Tool songs -- and our ability to adapt, evolve, become better than we were the day before. Gotta love Tool.
the spiral comes from the fact that if you draw a square of area 1, and then connect it to another of area 1, then use one side to make a square of area two, you can keep doing this in the fibonnacci sequence. then if you start in the center and draw an arc covering 2/3rds of the area of each square, you'll have a nautilus spiral. |
Love the whole "swing on the spiral" motif that they muscially apply to the fibonnaci pattern. if you follow along with maynard's syllabic vocal delivery, you'll find that he literally "swings on the spiral."
