This song caught me for the syncopation on the chorus as well as the wording. It's a discussion of our in-between states. A chance to reflect on, "Whose life are we living anyway?"
The timing of the beat on the chorus is tricky for a non-musician s . I don't know what you call it, but it's not straight block up and down with the beat. It's like timing and half-timing of words with music. It arrested me musically and poetically.
