My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult

Although White Zombie received most of the credit for mixing tales of sex, Satan, and gore with a rock/dance beat (although admittedly with more of a heavy metal edge), Chicago's My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult specialized in similar territory for just as long. Originally formed in 1987 by Buzz McCoy (who had recently relocated from Boston) and Groovie Mann, the duo sought to create a worthy musical accompaniment that could be used as a soundtrack to trashy B-movies. The duo's initial project was to make a movie (in the style of Russ Meyer and John Waters) to be named "My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult." The movie never got off the ground, but McCoy and Mann used the aborted movie's title for the name of their just-formed group, as their over-the-top stage show was best described as "sensory overload" (featuring a revolving door of weird characters, props, and intense visuals). Signing on with Chicago's renowned industrial dance label Wax Trax!, the Thrill Kill Kult issued several releases between 1989 and 1991: a self-titled EP, plus the full-lengths I See Good Spirits and I See Bad Spirits, Kooler Than Jesus, Confessions of a Knife, and Sexplosion!

By this time, the group had attracted the attention of Interscope Records, which signed up the Thrill Kill Kult and reissued Sexplosion!, which had spawned perhaps the group's best-known song, "Sex on Wheelz" (the track would also be featured in director Ralph Bakshi's animated movie Cool World). The group only issued one more release for Interscope, 1994's 13 Above the Night, before switching to the Rykodisc label and issuing such further releases as 1995's Hit & Run Holiday (a concept album of sorts, which told the tale of a "rebellious vixen," Krystal Starlust, and her "fatal attraction" to a drifter named Apollo) and 1997's Crime for All Seasons.

The Thrill Kill Kult failed to issue any new studio recordings from 1998 through 2000, while a collection of 18 remixes, Dirty Little Secrets, saw the light of day in 1999. But, by 2001, the band had reappeared once more, issuing 2001's The Reincarnation of Luna and 2002's Golden Pillz: The Luna Remixes for yet another new record label, Invisible. In 2004 the Ryko label acquired most of Wax Trax!'s releases, including early albums from the Kult. That same year they reissued the band's first three albums and released a new compilation, The Best of TKK, along with a set of remixes named Diamonds & Daggerz. An album dedicated to the disco era that had sat on the shelves for a decade finally saw the light of day in 2005 when Gay, Black & Married hit the shelves. Two years later the lounge-styled Filthiest Show in Town appeared. In 2010 they introduced their own label Sleazbox with the album Death Threat plus the remix/re-recordings collection Sinister Whisperz: The Wax Trax Years.

In addition to their own releases, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult has contributed tracks to several movie soundtracks, including Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls, Greg Araki's Nowhere, and the hit flick The Crow (in the latter of which the group made a cameo appearance); and over the years, has toured with such renowned (and similarly styled) bands as Siouxie and the Banshees, Lords of Acid, EMF, and Marilyn Manson. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

An older favorite of mine that I keep going back to listen to. TKK is great!
Small world - I was at that show in San Antonio in 1989, sgh3rd. A great show, indeed.

Love these guys, they should do a tour with KISSING IN GRAVEYARDS

wow, memories...F r i d a y night, Nov 20, 1989 at the Showcase, San Antonio, TX...great show...
this was the first song I heard from these guys. great album!
I am not surprised by the number of individuals who were clued into this group from the Crow soundtrack. After the Flesh was an amazing song that was utilized perfectly in that scene.
Thrill Kill rocks. Everyone else can suck it
Been a fan since the 80s.
I'm still judging all their songs by After The Flesh (the same can be said about a lot of the bands on The Crow ((soundtrack is still great, but movie is an embarrassing sign of Hottopics to come))) and still not quite buying in...maybe it's because I'm snooty?
If it wasn't for The (ridiculousl y fantastic) Crow soundtrack, I would have never heard of them. Sorry Pandora, but you don't get the credit this time.

Why is this on my MF Doom station? Maybe on Bauhaus or NIN, but MF Doom?
Does anyone have the promo cd Some Have To Dance, Some Have To Kill? I had been privileged to receive it from my friend who was an old school DJ at Leland City Club Detroit back in the 80's it was special and this dumb poser chick Jenny L took off with it. DeeAnne!!!!
One of my all time favorite bands of the 80's all the way into 2010 ..go to every concert they tour coming into Houston since 1985
One of the only highlights of spending one's teen years living in Peoria was getting to go see TKK pretty much as often as one wanted, lucky me!
My life with the TKK is always killer
I love this music.
When Groovie Mann isn't wasted, they put on an awesome show. If he is tweaking... the show is gonna suck. I love this band but they are either great or suck major donkey *alls.
Saw them in Houston back in 2012 @ The House of Blues...I must say that they were pretty badass...It was most definitely high on my list of great shows I have been to, that's throwing in Interpol, Tool, Arcade Fire and even The Xx...I guess to each their own...
been listening to these guys sence early ninety's best shows ever saw them three times. Brother recognized them in his resteraunt last year in Indy. How cool is that?
@Hezzopopkin s : The Crow mention is in the last paragraph.
Uh, they don't even mention The Crow which they appeared in as well. One of my favorites ever! And I am fortunate enough to personally know the originally talented and fabulous Groovie Mann who is one of the most genuine and real people I've had the pleasures of knowing in this life! He rocks on stage, puts on a wonderful show every time! They'll be touring later this year all around the states.Lora, I was at that Cubby Bear show in Chicago 2 years ago and yes, they totally rocked!
i went to Chicago for a weekend in 1989 to check out the all the cool music that ws coming out of there. I was only supposed to stay for a long weekend and I ended up staying for two weeks . I told work I broke my ankle......I loved it there and made some great friends. And saw TKK too.
They did a kick a** show at the Cubby Bear in Chicago a while back and the Reggies show was entertaining as hell. Not all shows are gems, but the Cubby Bear they played all their old stuff. It was a rockin good time!
They do the Devil's work. Worship them.
i asked jacki blaque to go home with me, while hanging out by the tour bus. she said why yes baby. incredible.

Ohhh yeah.I love them. Cant wait to see them Aug 5th with lords of acid.(2010) on acid 8-)
I swear that "Gay, Black and Married" is one of the best CD titles ever. This band is funny, ironic and highly talented. Great stuff.
wow, the sex on wheels version here is a thousand times better than the video version, haha. The video version sounds cheesy as hell
Shes the white rabbit, and she would never buy drugs, yet she freaked out on acid.. very very badly.
sorry to bust your bubble, bogart, but a lot of groups suck live. the prob is that most the music they write in a studio just isnt easily compatable to perform live. but if you were dissapointed with them live then dont go see Filter, or Cake and deffinitely not sublime (even though you cant see them live anymore).
humphery - I agree with you. they suck live these days. They didn't used to but man the decades have not been kind. Don't get me wrong I love TKK and dig on most of the albums but they need to stay away from the stage.
bogart... you fail

My $0.02. I dearly miss "Hit & Run Holiday" (1995). Every track is happy-goofy good; toe tapping too.
Hope this CD is added soon. I haven't heard "Sexplosion" or "Music to Strip By" (or "Songs to ..."), but would like Pandora to consider them as well. I might like them also!
achaneyft
Genitorturer s is pretty rotten sweet! How can you not have Sexplosion?? ? One of their greatest! When Levi and I used to play in the day, that's what they always played on their tours.....Th o s e were the days....
Where's Songs to Strip by? Its not even mentioned in the article..... . . . . .
The selected discography here is missing some key classics, such as "Kooler than Jesus" and "I See Good Spirits..I See Bad Spirits"
