Ralph Vaughan Williams

October 12, 1872 - August 26, 1958
born in Down Ampney, England, composed during the Romantic period
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was a central figure in the renaissance of English music that occurred in the first part of the 20th century. Using long, smooth lines and modal tonalities derived from folk sources, he deftly fashioned a unique style in the post-Romantic vein. At the core of his output are his nine symphonies and other orchestral compositions, such as his Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis and The Lark Ascending. His choral settings of hymns, carols, and folk songs -- some of which have become the standard setting -- appear in several collections that he co-edited. ~ Patsy Morita, Rovi

Love it!!!!!!!!!! :-D
Beautiful piece of music. Gorgeous melody, originally written by King Henry VIII. He should of spent more time writing music and less time divorcing his wives.
This is perhaps my very favorite piece of music. I first heard it as a teenager over 50 years ago and could not get it out of my head. The sound of this delicate yet powerful music has carried me through many of life's tough spots, reminding me of the Earth's great beauty.
Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you started reading this so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in the next 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lovers name will appear on the screen in big letters this is so scary because it works

Listen and love
My Lord, my Love was crucified...
I remember playing this with my orchestra 2 summers ago! Favorite song
Did Five Mystical Songs with Briar Cliff in the spring when I took concert choir and jazz choir at WIT.
adrienne.gea r h a r t
This is the most beautiful music I've ever heard.
Vaughn Williams is a treasure to us all. I love to savor the listening experience. Wonderful.

Beautiful tonality...t h e piece was used in the movie, Master and Commander. Definitely captured the essence of the film.
sacredfun6
Always emotional, every time, straight to the heart
Nothing like RVW out there; soaring, resplendent, undeniable music. It's a shame even many classical music lovers have not discovered him.
Fantasia on greensleves is exquisite.
Left hand was like gymnopaidies . Not tht im conplaining
rockyr1
My personal favorite of this recording of the Fantasia is an old one by Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony. I was in the audience that night (1990) and the silent spaces between the notes was breathtaking !
jamesgiles1
I hear something from this album every few weeks, and Pandora still has the descriptions from disc 1 applied to disc 2 (and vice-versa). Great music. Would be nice to have it identified correctly.
My Violin teacher told me that she met Ralph (pronounced rafe) Vaughan Williams at the last Three Choirs festival he attended in Gloucester. He was sitting in the row of chairs right in front of her and he was wearing a grey cardigan. it was in 1957. I Vaughan Williams is the best English composer of all time... His Lark Ascending and Variation of Greensleaves is absolutely amazing..
jjbr921
Listening here....Aaro n Copeland feels like a poor man's Ralph V.W.
enzoinbath
I listen to everything from MegaDeth, Eric Dolphy to Eric Satie, but Vaugh Williams is a chart topper with me esp Fantasia on a theme by T. Tallis. Lush, verdant, spirtiual
To all of you folks who resonate to this music and say nice things about it it's nice to be in company with people who have sophisticati o n and good taste.....an d we know who we are. DMB
very nice!
This piece and The Lark Ascending are in my Classical Top 100. Both are stunningly beautiful masterpieces .
pete6289
This is my favorite piece of music of all time.
pjohnson9470
Reminds me of Indiana Jones haha
Like diarrhea in my ears.
Heavenly...
joychampion
just like a long deep breath
At 60 I'm too old now to have music make the hair on my neck stand up but listening to this piece still gets me close.
just mashed this--by accident--wi t h the Serenade by Ralph Vaughn Williams... interesting.
pbell861
Fantasia sounds hopeful and mournful... all at the same time.
ctika1052
Mr Vaughan William is amazingly talented, wha t a work of art wonderful music.
I may have heard his music before, but was unaware of who composed it till now. hearing Varian(5), Dives&Lazaru s , I've just become a fan. beautiful and powerful!
jwolfe547
When you think of "dog" your mind's eye may fill with a picture of a golden retriever. When you think of "composer" your mind's ear may fill with the music of Vaughn Williams. So natural, so organic.
jmf1057
I feel that Vaughan William reminds me that each one of his songs sounds like a continous pray that we get to listen too.
incarnadyne_ t e a r s
I was reading Elizabeth Kostova's "The Historian" while listening to "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis." It's as if the two were meant for each other: Fantasia has many moments of an Eastern European flavor, subtlety of chord changes that fit beautifully with the book. Fantasia has long been my favorite of RVW's works. Captivating.
bthomaspaul
Love RVW - his music is transcendent . But the photo above needs to be replaced - it looks like he's wearing a yarmulke...
dscripted
Well put Paul. His music is very emotionally, very moving. Heavy stuff yet easy to listen to.
ben1444
AMAZING.
If a picture is worth a thousand words his compositions are worth a thousand pictures.
CB, It's not just old-fashione d . . . B r i t i s h actor Ralph Fiennes pronounces his given name "Rafe," as well.
He's my #5 top classical composer of all time (out of thousands), and probably in the top 10 of all composers in general for me, so yeah, nobody messes with Ralph Vaughan Williams around me, nobody. He knows how to write music that is EMOTIONALLY ENGAGING and also SPIRITUALLY ENNOBLING/RE F I N E D at the same time, which is a HUGE, HUGE deal to me.
cbcaples
Old-fashione d English pronunciatio n of 'Ralph' is 'Rafe.' I would really love to hear Vaughan Williams's 'The Pilgrim's Progress.'
Robert, you are an idiot. He is British.
The Lark Ascending is pure genius.
.....do you spell his name RAIPH or RALPH? .....and if it's RALPH, why is it pronounced RAIPH? he is english after all.
arant.jose
Amazing...
